I imagine it the other way round. Carnivore predatory aliens might be focused on attacking on ground, personally, instinctively. Humans would look at an army taunting them and call in a carpet bombing and have a cup of tea

Well... depends on the goal kinda If it's just for metals and stuff you could also just try to use planet crackers and take the pieces If you want the planet but need to terraform it anyway, well... It depends on how advanced we are talking about... Get enough anti matter to literally obliterate the surface and dig deep enough or take guided anti-matter and nuclear warheads to the entrance... they might have defenses... but anti-matter should still work Another way would be to have sensors able to figure out what energy they use... fully underground and without any options for surface stations the only option i can think of rn is heat (although there might be more options) Well you could disrupt that too: if it's external (from star) block it. If its internal... either actually try to overheat it or try to cool down the core. If nothing like that works there still is an option: if the species inhabiting the system has more systems make sure to get orbital domonance everywhere... then tell them to get out of there or you planet crack them one planet after the other... The only reason you would ever need to dig them out is for forced labour or if your morals don't accept genocide. which may be true for (hopefully most) humans, but cannot be assumed as a general concept for all species in any galaxy

Ground forces are important. You need to land and repair your ships somewhere, sometimes you aren’t gonna be able to refuel from another ship. Plus what if you need to use the planet’s resources when other things are in shorter supply? Boots on the ground can tip things logistically in your favor

For a century it was thought the Hittites either didn't exist, or were just a small regional tribe. Then they found Derinkiyu, a multilevel underground city that housed 20 to 30,000 people at it's zenith. One of many such proving not only the enormity of the ancient Hittites empire, but why it was nigh impossible to conquer. Some of these cities were still in use by refugees to hold back the Turks into the 20 th century. You guess what books, as often they do, proved the skeptics wrong.

For some reason, the name Light Main Battle Tank really sticks in my craw. It seems like a needlessly complicated. If it is the main tank that is used then it is a main battle tank. If it is a light transportable tank then it’s a light tank. But who am I to dictate how future armies name their crap
@ChemySh
@ChemySh 11 ай бұрын
several asian countries are actually starting to develop their own versions of MBT, which are better suited to... challenging terrain and possesses better operational flexibility when specialized equipment cant be brought in due to lack of infrastructure. They do work better than MBTs in the terrain theyre designed for, but the official designation "Medium Tank" doesnt inspire the same fear that "Main Battle Tank" does.
@Nempo13
@Nempo13 7 ай бұрын
@@ChemySh They want the name to inspire fear. When a true and proper tank can be named anything, painted bright pink, and people will still fear it. Proof? An old decommissioned Abrams was painted bright barbie pink for a little cancer girl to ride in/on. A few Iraqi's saw it coming down the street and legit just pissed themselves and ran in pure raw fear and PTSD. Apparently they were ex military. They turned themselves in to police. They thought the military was there for THEM (we did deport them as they were here under assumed identities) and just fled. Light tanks made for special terrains always lack that ultra fear factor as a lot of what makes a tank scary is it's insane size. Which lighter tanks typically lack. They should just admit what it is in their name. America has light transport tanks, we dub them as such. Still aren't penetrating them with small arms, and the angled armor does the job for things like RPGs.
@TheMonk72
@TheMonk72 7 ай бұрын
Depends on the top of your scale I guess. Most tanks are 'light' compared to an Abrahms. Which is light in comparison to the BOLO tanks from various SF works.

Another important aspect that ensure's ground forces are important: Logistics Even the energy that powers a space ship's lasers is limited. It will eventually run out. Or the parts will burn out or wear down. It's enough for a handful or even hundreds of engagements. But a planet? Orders of magnitude more shots fired is required to bomb a planet into submission. Wear and tear and 'ammo' (power supply for energy weapons) very much becomes a problem when the target is literally *hundred of MILLIONS of kilometers* in size. Anything short of nuclear fission class weaponry will swiftly run out of ammo or wear out before coming even close to getting the job done. And when the nearest resupply is light years away? Yeah. Ground forces that can take a beach-head, then dig in and setup a base of operations then hold out for reinforcements. It'll take a long time, but that is the way to go. Well.. at least if conquest is your goal. Nukes can get the job done faster, but there won't be much left to occupy afterwards.
