When I learnt you could propagate herbs from cuttings (among other plants), I was mind blown!

It's totally liberating isn't it! Have fun with your propagating.

We use this method for Basil. All our Basil started from a cutting from a Basil bunch from our co-op almost 2 years ago. It's Mrs Basillissimo and her Basil babies ❤

Ciaoo Morag, grazie per questi consigli per la propagazione del basilico. Da noi è quasi finito il periodo di coltivazione all'aperto del basilico per colpa del freddo dell'inverno. Proverò quest'anno di prolungare la stagione indoor. Oggi preleverò qualche cuttings e li metterò in acqua e in vaso. Grazie e saluti dall'Italia.

Great holistic look at basil, Morag. This was the first year I was able to grow basil in a greenhouse with any success. It still got overwhelmed by tomatoes and sweet peppers however. It's well into autumn now and we lost all the plants but I somehow think they wouldn't survive the Northern hemisphere autumn/winter in an unheated space.

So great to hear you got to grow some. Lovely to hear from you

Thank you so much for all the information you provide. It helps me to stay motivated in my garden. I would love to know how you manage snails. They are decimating all of my plants.

Hi and thanks for your message and question. My response with ‘pests’ is to firstly think about what likes to eat them, and to include habitat that attracts them. Secondly until the balance is found, I choose seasonal plants that are less prone.

Oh Morag! I loved this video!! I have so many tomatoes in my garden at the moment and was wondering how to propagate some more. Until this video, I was just snipping off the flowers, which makes the basil bushier, and letting the flowers fall to the ground around the plant hoping that they would do well!!! Your method looks so much easier! I think I must have been an Italian in a former life as Tomatoes and Basil are growing the best in my subtropical location in QLD!

Thank you for the great tips!! I will try this, as my husband and I run a restaurant. We go through a lot of basil. My problem at the moment is earwigs eating just about everything in my garden. Got any advice? (I don't have chickens, btw. I was thinking they'd be handy).
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife Жыл бұрын
Earwigs are food for many other species such as birds, spiders, lizards, frogs and assassin bugs.They are an important part of the food web. Think about how you can create habitat for insectiverous birds - little ones. How to add water, logs to hide under, little ponds etc . Also assassin bugs like mulch, vines, and shrubs - include things like dandelions, dill, fennel,, queen anne's lace, marigolds, tansy. They are also attracted to lights - so pop some solar lights in your garden.

@@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife thank you very much. I LOVE these ideas. I need to think more about the big picture, and not just how to get rid of something that has become a 'pest' because my garden environment is lacking. Cheers ❤🐦

Great video, thank you. 😄 I have done this with tomatoes and sweet potato but are there other plants that you can propagate via cuttings? Thanks! 👍
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife Жыл бұрын
Indeed there is. Most herbs in fact. We can save so much money by knowing how to do cuttings. I will do more videos in this series of propagation I think.

Basil does not resist the cold...In Buenos Aires we can have it until April-May...after that it is not useful for pesto...The strategy that I recommend for those of us who live in Buenos Aires and want to become independent from the supermarket, is to harvest it before it gets cold and store the leaves in the freezer...

We have planted sweet basil here in Gympie over and over and it doesn’t thrive. It’s been very frustrating.whether it’s in pots or healthy soil it doesn’t grow.
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife Жыл бұрын
Try the perennial type - so so much easier. I have good luck with sweet basil where there is a little more protection from the elements
