Skate contests like Tampa AM and pro can have some elevated mind states but the playing field is definitely more perilous when legit Hawaiian 6ft is rolling through a shelving heaving reef and you absolutely better make the drop or someone or yourself could get hurt. There are serious reasons to be passionate about water safety and to minimize chaos. 56:26

As an Ocean Rescue Lifeguard, surfing is way gnarlier. There are no rental guys at skate spots encouraging tourist to drop in on ramps. I often have to go save people on the edge of disaster out in the surf. In a few seconds the ocean can decide it is done with you.

grew up skating 80's 90's/200's skateboard was a passport. went everywhere on earth and dudes were always like where you from? stay at our house we got beer. started surfing mid 90's and thought it was gonna be all aloha., not even. daily fights it was crazy. It took me years to get my head around it. Seems like you have to surf long enough until youre old enough that no-one will mess with you anymore. I broke 14 bones skating but surfing is way gnarlier.

Surfing is 100% gnarlier, solely based on the fact that in Surfing you need to be in tune with and respond to an unpredictable force of nature. Skating a ramp or rail or something stationary doesn't take as much psychic energy. Same with snowboarding to an extent. That mountain pretty much is what it is besides slight changes in snow pack

Skaters are like earthquakes while surfers are like hurricanes. They are both gnarly. The difference is when a skater gets hurt the fear is instant, intense, and brief, just like an earthquake. Surfers know the big waves are coming days in advance just like a Hurricane, so you have days to think about the life and death situations that you on purpose will have to face. Surfers have to face their fears for a longer time. Therefore, they are the gnarliest!
