I’ve never understood the idea of “dumping” or “laying down” your motorcycle as a means of avoiding a collision. Once a wreck is happening, then it makes more sense to get away from the motorcycle. Is that what you meant by “dump your bike”?

obviously you can't just take into consideration the material, the shape and other factors have to be taken into consideration too. It's not easy to feel comfortable in the beginning but you get used to it. Most riders lack the skill to use it grab the rear brake and crash. I've seen it again and again. That plus ignorance of the principle of counter steering and looking where you want to be rather than target fixation which will lead you right into what you are trying to avoid. If you master these three items you will almost always avoid trouble. Last, I stopped riding at night unless absolutely essential and you've further added to your safety. Cheers

This "dump the bike" or "lay the bike down" and slide myth is dangerous. I was a motor insurance claims investigator for many years and had it parroted at me many times by customers after they had had accidents. A bike has tyres/tires designed to grip the road, and brakes designed to slow it down under control. While it is rolling, you can brake, accelerate, and steer, to control the speed and direction. Once the bike is on its side, all you have is momentum, and the stopping power of shiny metal sliding on the road is considerably less than the stopping power of purpose-designed tyres and brakes. It is dangerous advice, even when repeated as a joke.

Your best option is to use PROGRESSIVE BRAKING! Squeeze that front brake lever with progressively more force, this allows the front end to compress and apply maximum traction to your front tire. 80-90% of a motorcycle's braking force comes from the front brake. If you grab the front brake all at once, the forks won't compress, and the tire will skid, resulting in your front end washing out. Rear brake applies only a small amount of braking force as most of your traction is up front. If you lose traction, you are screwed! DO NOT lay your bike down!

I laid my bike down like this. I was in Coral Gables, FL, driving on US-1, where it meets up with the end of I-95, heading North. It was raining, and visibility was rough. I didn't see a stalled car, in the inside lane around a curve. I laid it down, and rode it, as you suggested. I broke the front brake lever, and tore a small hole in the elbow of my jacket. The crash bars around the engine took the brunt of the damage. Other than the crap in my pants, I was ok. That was back in the 80s, and I'll never forget it.😅

I wish you could have a talk with the crazy kids here who seem to think that straight pipes are going to protect them when they're driving 60-70mph in heavy traffic with a 40mph speed limit, while they zig-zag through traffic. I used to see a kid who drove like that all over town on a motorcycle with a very distictive paint job. One evening on the news, I saw that distinctive bike laying in the street with a lumpy sheet laying nearby. "Loud pipes save lives" is what they all say, but people driving around in hermetically-sealed cars with 1000-watt stereos blasting away are not likely to hear those pipes until it's too late. A little video about that wouldn't hurt.
