Great engine, so was the AMC 238 it was based on. The chrysler 225 slant 6 was also a great engine. As were the 5 liter ford and chevy inline 6 truck engines. The jeep 4.0 was the last of them, as far as I know, to be built. Was there any inline 6's built after the jeep 4.0 was discontinued?

FINALLY!!! My dad drove our 1998 Cherokee XJ Classic off the lot in Geneva Illinois from Lou's Jeep AMC brand new in late fall of 97 I believe only 9 miles on the odometer. I had her for 22 YEARS 503,360k of the hardest miles you could ever imagine. Because I'm a fan of your channel I chose to after 2 decades buy a 5th generation 4runner to this very second I miss her and the in-line dinosaur 6-cylinder engine which never failed me once. It's an absolute shame what parades around today with Jeep badges they are all garbage. I do love my 4runner but always get a little sad when I see an old XJ pass by. When I donated her with the well over half million miles she ran like the day we drove her home and the tape deck cigarette lighter(never used) still worked everything worked but after 2 decades of Chicago road salt, the undercarriage was getting bad. If they sold this exact model, engine, and specs I'd gladly willingly pay whatever they were asking. Miss that girl. The original little tank.

The automatic used in the 1987 to 2001 cherokee is the AW4, same transmission as the Toyota 340a, used in several Toyota models including the 1 ton cab/chassis trucks used by UHaul and the turbo charged Supra.

@gregswank547 7 күн бұрын
Both the AW4 and the AX-15 were manufactured by Aisin Warner in Japan, and both are excellent transmissions unlike the Japco crap they put in most Japanese cars these days. The AX-15 can take a lot more torque than the old 6 could put out in stock form so it is often used behind Ford and GM V8's in hotrods. The manually equipped Cherokees were tow rated at 2000# ...but I regularly pulled a loaded racecar trailer that maxed out at just under 5000#. I replace a couple of clutches and rebuilt the Dana 35 rear axle a couple of times but it never left me stranded, although one clutch replacement did cost me a night in a motel while a really nice shop in Portland OR put in a new one. Racers can be so nice...sometimes.
@johnpearson492
@johnpearson492 7 күн бұрын
@@gregswank547 Though it's very hard to confirm, I think the tow rating on my Comanche with an AX-15, NP231 and Dana 44 rear axle appears to be 4000lbs. I've towed over 5000 lbs quite a few times and 6k once. The drive train couldn't care less, it works great under load. The chassis is not heavy enough to handle 6k lbs comfortably. Both Aisin transmissions put into the 90s Jeeps were excellent.

I owned a '98 Jeep Cherokee for 20 years. The powertrain was indestructible. It was also extremely off-road capable. The only weakness--typical of Jeep vehicles--was the electrical system. In 20 years, I think that I replaced nearly every electrical component on the Cherokee--fans, alternator, wiper motors, switches, instrument panel, etc. But, parts were relatively cheap. I sold it a few years ago when I simply no longer needed it--it's still going strong for the fellow who bought it from me.

Bought a model year 2000 the end of 1999 brand new. Ordered it from Jeep with what we wanted. Still have it with almost 390,000 miles, runs great. Engine (4.0) and transmission (automatic) original, both untouched. Regular fluid changes as noted in video. My son has a '97 5 speed 2 door two wheel drive 4 liter with 320,000 miles. We fixed up when he was 15 and he now drives to college. I just bought a 1998 model year in May with 178,000 miles (baby, just broke in...). It is a rare 5 speed 4 wheel drive, runs great, love it, they are awesome!

I replaced the radiator in my 2001 XJ. It cost me $80 and about 2 hours of my time. The aftermarket for these things is amazing. You can get everything from 12 hole injectors to a new engine, if you ever blow it up. I love my XJ. I'll keep it forever.

Those were awesome and practical motors, but they don't build em so tough anymore. I've a 300TDI Defender pick-up, and it doesn't have ECU, electric windows, or cruise control, but it does give me 30+ UK MPG and is a joy to drive, especially about my woodland in the Scottish Highlands. Runs on almost any oil based fuel too. Just got to love the old, reliable fixable stuff 👍

@@billnyilas8 Do a dodge viper coil pack conversion- k suspension sells a kit :) now you can run iridium plugs and if it goes bad, it’s like $40 for a new coil. Frees up a lot of space and makes the plugs a breeze to get to

I think the last good Cherokee or Grand Cherokee was the WJ from the late 90s and early 00s. You could still get the straight six and TorqueFlight transmission. After that I think I would pass on one, especially the ones built since the merger with Fiat.

Had a 1995 Cherokee. It had only two issues - the O2 sensor had to be replaced shortly after I bought it, and the rear lift gate struts went bad (a nice 1x4 board mitigated that). Traded it in with over 150,000 miles and it was still running good. It had the 5-speed manual transmission. Wish my current car had a manual in it.

When I was young my parents bought the 1990 version of it... back then it was the Cherokee and the higher end one was super comfortable. The 2000 one is pretty much the same with less luxuries with an updated version of the 4.0. Good Jeeps. Gasoline toilet bowl consumption tho. They also rust pretty quickly in Canada.

I've got a 1993 Cherokee showing 340,000 on the odometer. I bought it used and it had more than 300,000 then. As far as I can tell its all original except for the normal replacement of small parts. Runs and shifts just fine. It's ruff as a cob but I bought it for a hunting rig. I really like the manual windows, door locks and 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive engagement lever. And the A.C works perfectly in the summer. So far no heater problems either.
