Yes, most bikes and garden tractors have shunt voltage regulators and they will get abused by a vehicle’s charging system, especially when the volts fly over 14.2.

Years ago I went to Crappy Tire and bought one of those solar trickle chargers (when they were on a crazy sale of course) and mounted on a pole at the end of my garage. Ran a cable into the area I park the lawn tractor and installed a power outlet protected by a fuse directly to the battery. It works even in the winter. (I have a Berco snowblower mounted on the tractor) Keeping the vehicle off is a smart idea...I've had to do that too. Cheers from NB

I burned up a starter on a 80's G6200 Kubota doing it wrong. Last year traded it in for a John Deere X570 which cuts better/higher but I miss the sound of that diesel engine and no-E gas is a 25 miles drive from my place. Hey glad you're back!
@jje81828 ай бұрын
Did what wrong? Hooked it up backwards? You'll never burn up a 12 volt starter from any 12 volt system. You could have 500 batteries hooked up parallel which would still be 12 volts and the starter would still use the same amount of amps to run as it would with one battery.
@WJCTechyman4 ай бұрын

Unless the internal resistance of that battery is exceedingly low, which is no different than if your car battery was 100% dead then it could produce 100 amps, but very quickly the voltage in that battery would raise and the current would drop off, so start the car, just don't leave the cables hooked up all afternoon once it's started, but even then the mower battery is shot already so over charging it isn't really a concern as far as damaging it goes, and you absolutely will not damage the mower charging system, esp since it is basically a coil and a bridge rectifier

Thanks for sharing this info. There is even more to jumping other machines. A lot of newer electronics are designed to only have 12 volts at start up from the vehicles battery. Cars, motorcycles, lawn equipment, etc. have electronics that can be damaged if there is more than 12 volts at start up so the donor vehicle should NOT be running in any case. Once any vehicle is started the charging system will replace the electricity used but the 14.5 volts only goes to the battery NOT the other electronics. If the donor vehicle is running you will be sending 14.5 volts to everything on that dead vehicle. I say that because I recently saw a memo from corporate Harley regarding the jumping of a dead battery on a Harley.

Great tip! Wish I knew this sooner because I tried jump starting my rider mower a couple days ago and noticed the jumper cables smoking due to rapid overheating! I had the truck engine running of course!!!
@WJCTechyman4 ай бұрын
If they were smoking, you ran too narrow a gauge of cable to start that tractor. Also, with the right gauge, when the tractor has a fault somewhere (probably a short in this case) the cables will melt. For most tractors, say starting around 8-10 hp you should be running minimum American 6 gauge cable to the starter motor and back to the battery. This also works for jumper cables. Using beefier jumper cables helps transmit more current to your boosted vehicle. Starter motors on tractors can possibly consume at least 100 Amps at start due to working against the static inertia of the engine.

Hello Steve, I briefly thought that this was the first video that I had to contradict because I see absolutely no problem with two alternators running in parallel. Then it occurred to me that the voltage regulation works differently with small engines and if the charging voltage from the alternator (truck) is slightly higher than that from the charge controller (riding mower) it will "burn up". (sorry if my English isn't good, I just ran it through the translator.) Greetings from Bavaria and thanks for the great videos :)

How weird! Yesterday (when you released this) I went to fire up my less-than-a-year-old Husqvarna mower for my first mowing of the year and the battery was dead. I had used it about a month ago to cut up some residual leaf clusters, and everything was fine then, but testing it with my old-school load tester the battery apparently has shorted internally, so it's boat anchor bad. I'll be calling my dealer tomorrow for a warranty replacement (there's less than 10 hours on the mower), but I wanted to mow so I got out a bench charger I have that has a boost charge of 15 amps. It couldn't overcome the ground enough to give me more than solenoid clicking, so I swapped batteries with an old mower I have that I use to pull a tree-limb gathering wagon around the yard for pre-mowing cleanup. Got the job done, but once again it's weird how the algorithm seems to read your mind sometimes. Great tip, and this of course also applies to jumping off vehicles, if you have a large enough battery in the donor vehicle for cranking without the engine running. It's definitely gentler on the charging systems!
@eddievilla15848 ай бұрын
Great video. This is also the way to jump start a motorcycle. In fact you should never jump start a car with another car running. If you do need to run a car, be ready to pull off the jumper cables as soon as the dead car starts up or else you may need to replace one or two burned out alternators.

I like to camp off grid on our private campsite we developed on our property over the years. I park my truck parallel to the trailer and just pop the hood on the truck, hook up and away it goes. I would need to customize the outside frame to fit a larger battery. If the generator didn’t have a 30amp outlet to fit the camper power cord I would have sold it by now.

No telling how many times I had done this so one day I unhooked my charger and jumped onto my mower, a Scott’s 16hp 42” cut and I hit the switch and KaBoom!!!! The battery exploded! It sounded like a 12 gauge shotgun had been fired right under my seat! I felt the hair on the back of my legs part because that’s where the deck height adjustment is. My ears were ringing from the blast! I was lucky that the battery was dry. I had charged it so many times that it had no water left in it. It split the battery diagonally and couldn’t trade it in on a new one it was so bad. I’m surprised that the cops didn’t show up because I was in my garage when I started it and I’m sure the blast echoed through my neighborhood! Enjoy and learn a ton of information from you!

I work with Solar Panels and charge controllers and I recognize two charge controllers can charge the same battery or one charge controller can charge several batteries. When charge controllers are charging the same battery bank and there’s more than one charge controller they’re just contributing to the total and monitoring The voltage of the battery the whole time. The batteries themselves are the buffers that separate the charging systems. But even if you had two charging systems working together but one is much stronger than the other it would mean the stronger one would be charging the battery system faster. It’s just a combination. So if one charger is pushing 100 A and the other charger is pushing 15 Athe total will be 115 A going to the battery bank. It’s not like the hundred amps coming out of the one charger is going to go across the batteries and affect the charging system of the tractor. In this case you have two battery banks, the tractor has a small battery and the truck has a much larger battery. The truck battery is at a higher voltage and because it’s so much more powerful it will instantly push the smaller battery up to its voltage, which will send too much power to the weaker battery Because they’re not evenly charged. So for that reason it would be damaging the battery on the tractor and nothing else.
@borisjankovici6628 ай бұрын
Unless there's a limit on the rate of charge of the battery, it doesn't matter. They're both lead acid batteries... He is missing that the cold cranking amps of a vehicle battery are 350 to 600 amps while alternators generally aren't bigger than 150Amp (and that's on the high side). The battery can supply far more current than an alternator so this point of turning off the vehicle is moot. The battery on the tractor IS being charged by vehicles battery simply by being connected.
@FaithwalkerTodd8 ай бұрын
@@borisjankovici662 all batteries have a limit or a maximum continuous charge rate. For a typical battery found in a pick up truck you would expect this rate to be somewhere around 20 A.

One season a few years ago and money was super tight, I jumped my RER Snapper every time. I never even started the vehicle that provided the charge. I later converted the Snapper motor to pull start...built my right bicep up 😂.

I knew that, but had forgotten that due my aging, mushy brain. Had to buy a new mower battery today, in fact. Thanks for the tip - (again)!

I converted an old Jacobsen RER. Over to electronic Ignition for my buddy. His battery was dead but he wanted to hear it run. I hooked it up to my truck battery, not running . Started it up and it run perfect. I shut it off and took my cables off and started picking up my tools. He said wait I want to see if it will mow so he hooked the cables back up and I walked back to the front on my truck and before I could yell don't, he cranked it and the smoked rolled out of the engine cover. He asked why it smoked. I told him the he hooked the jumper cables up backwards. He burnt up the new electronic ignition kit. He junked it to me for fifty dollars. I fixed it and sold it for two hundred fifty. Told the lady that it needed a battery. I never charge my buddy on anything I do for him.

I usually start the vehicle but turn it off or disconnect when the mower starts. To be honest, I have only had to do this a few times and it is easier to just go get a new battery for the mower. Great to know.

Never thought of this before . If both were putting out the same voltage then I cannot see a problem, but they seldom will , add to that they both cycle up and down in voltage many times per second , and it could be a concern. I don't get the concept that a higher amp alternator will drive current into a lower But just for the heck of it I likely will boose from a non running vehicle, he is right that there should be no need to run it
