I am almost 82 years and when I was a teenager I read of falls occurring often among the old. So I decided to do a little preparation, namely I practiced walking backwards to strengthen all of muscles involved. Generally 20% of my walk is going in reverse. So far I have succeeded. I do not want to celebrate too early but I think this is a worthwhile approach.

Just had a nasty backward fall fracturing 3 more vertebrae. For some time I have been tottering when standing socially. I was told that my centre of balance would be changed due to previous fractures but not how to correct it. Considering buying a rollator to walk with but feel stubborn as only weeks ago I was doing dance aerobic classse with the youngsters. I'm 70. Already bought your book. Your videos are priceless. Thank you. You've given me hope and motivation to continue my lifetime love of excercise...I was on the brink of giving up. xx

Will, your YT videos have helped me go from a torn meniscus and walking with a cane in January to completing a 5K in under an hour this weekend. I’m only 62 but through a series of bad decisions I’m having issues now. I have hit my head on concrete at least 20 times. 2 in the last week. Unfortunately the first exercise I can’t do because squatting is almost impossible. I’ll do the others and see what I can get done. So appreciate the videos. You do a great job and almost feel like a friend.

Very useful. I’ve fallen a few times and I have compensated by leaning forward because it isn’t intuitive to strengthen those muscles - but that’s problems of it’s own. I’m happy to have a better solution.

I am a big fan of your KZbin channel and your newsletter. I am a Danish woman who has just turned 50 and has multiple sclerosis. Many of my physical sclerosis problems seem similar to the physical defects many people have when they are over 70 and 80 years old. My next conversation with my physiotherapist will be about back weight both when standing and walking. I can actually feel on my heels that I have way too much weight on them. I only saw the connection after I saw 'prevent backwards falling'.

Falling backward and postural instability can be seen in one of the subtype of Parkinson's disease or parkinsonian syndrome, due to loss of normal postural reflexes. This was usually tested by pull test. PT can be really beneficial in those patients.

I'm 70 and the only time I feel like I'm going to fall backwards sometimes is going upstairs. It's scary, especially with a laundry basket full.😳
@LinCarmer3 ай бұрын
May I suggest - get a big duffel or laundry bag to carry on your shoulders like a backpack. I had to resort to this when I had eye surgery that confused my depth perception. I’ve been using it ever since because it leaves my hands free to grip the railing going up 2 sets of stairs.

Will, I never miss your Friday emails. I have a tendency to fall backwards, which I've managed to avoid, but it could get worse, so these exercises were really helpful. However, I find a hamstring stretch while lying on the floor raising my leg with a strap or Pilates ring better for me than the chair stretch. Could you demonstrate that one sometime in the future? I've never seen this issue addressed before. Thanks.

I have two knee replacements Will, ten years apart mind, but my left was replaced nearly two years ago now and I still have tendon problems the lateral side at the back of the knee and it doesn’t take much for me to feel as if I’m tipping backwards. I didn’t have this issue at all before surgery but as soon as it was replaced I had really tight hamstrings and tendons.
