I did a lot of my own wrenching, but transmission work I left to my friend who did transmissions for a living. He had all of the right tools and equipment and could do accurate diagnoses. He told me many stories, the best one was a Cadillac that wouldn't shift into the higher gears. He got it after two dealerships and one independent shop had given up. It was a modern automatic that used solenoids instead of hydraulics to shift. After getting the wiring diagram he traced circuits until he found a wire leading to a switch on the power steering pump. ??? He bypassed the switch and the transmission shifted perfectly. All that was required was a replacement pressure switch. This was nowhere documented anywhere in the service manual and he decided that they didn't want anyone driving very fast if the power steering was not working.

If you do research on transmission shops before having your transmission rebuilt at a random place will save you money. I took a small transmission course 20 years ago and have never had an issue using the service manuals for clearance checks, bolt torque specs and disassembly / assembly from the service manual. Plus I never rebuild transmission removed by a customer (they tend to screw up when installing the torque converter more often than they change underwear) I only do the transmission rebuild if they bring me the vehicle so I can do the whole job and assure everything is done right and operates as it should.

I owned a 98 Dodge Caravan, which was actually an FBI package vehicle that Chrysler had built for a supplier of theirs. It actually had a custom paint color that only the federal package Vans had. And it had some nice Parts in it. I bought it with 46,000 miles on it and sold it with 256,000. At 211000 Miles I had the transmission rebuilt. I supplied the parts and the college I was going to supply the labor and rebuilt the transmission. That was one of the three best motor vehicles I have ever owned and I have been driving for over 2 million miles. Probably close to about 2.3 million. But that was a nice vehicle. With just a couple of minor tweaks, I was getting 31 miles per gallon the freeway, and 20 miles per gallon in town. If I could find another one of those things with low miles I'd take it in an instant. I actually assisted the students, along with the transmission instructor and showing them how to put the measuring devices in the trans to measure the thickness is to make sure everything is put together right. It was not a bad transmission. But you did have to keep it cool and one of the first things I did with it after I bought it was I went to Juilliard and I picked up an external transmission cooler out of a Ford Explorer and I put it into the cooling line that went from the radiator back to the transmission to make sure that transmission would run cooler than normal. The bad Dodge Caravan Transmissions were the ones in the mid-90s. However by 97 and 98 they had most of those problem solved. And those problems were caused by the transmission case being a little bit lighter than it needed to be. When it started overheating or getting warm at about 60 to 70 Thousand Miles it would expand enough to allow transmission fluid to go into places that was supposed to and it would start burning itself up. Keep them cool. Is the biggest thing you can do for an automatic transmission of any kind.

Rebuilding an automatic transmission at home, especially the A604 (41TE) used in the Caravan/Voyager, is simply out of the question for most people. Automatic transmissions often require special tools such as drum presses that the average person wouldn't own. Buying the tool(s) for a one time use would be absurd. It also involves the use of precision measuring tools for determinig end play and selective shim thickness during reassembly. And after tearing down an automatic transmission, the case needs to spend time in the jet washer to ensure the passages are thoroughly clean; if not, might as well throw a handful of sand inside the case during reassembly. And lets not forget that modern vehicles require reprogramming of the PCM ater a transmission replacement/o'haul to allow a relearn of shift strategy and clutch pack thickness. Without that the transmission can do some funky things. And no, unhooking the battery for 30 minutes does not reset the adaptives. I spent many years rebuilding automatic transmissions, including the A604 and invested a lot of money buying the right tools. I will agree that buying an exchange does save time and offer a warranty. But I still enjoy doing rebuilds because I know who did the work.

I used to have a 2010 Ford Fusion SEL V6 with the highly problematic at the time 6F35 6 Speed Automatic Transmission. The car drove great when it was brand new but quickly declined. The transmission had to be rebuilt twice under warranty. It never drove and shifted properly afterwards.

Hey Scotty, G'day from South Australia. Jusy a slight correction, the solar challenge runs from Darwin to Adelaide. (That's probably even more sunny than Perth to Sydney!)

Scotty, I bought toyota avensis a month ago. I have to tell you all the 5 speed manual for the 1.4/1.6/1.8 from around 2002 to 2008 vvti have very big design flaw - they eat the bearings and the other manual transmissions have other problems with used5th gear. The automatic transmissions have other issues as well. I called today more than 30 scrap yards looking for gearbox and there was none anywhere - they are so rare. Hopefully mine will be put together tomorrow. I can tell you what is the design flaw in details if you are interested. Manual gearboxes from this time are complete junk.

I can just imagine a solar powered car where i live in Scotland with our crap weather, mostly dull and rain. When it gets sunny people hold a party and rejoice, most days i would be lucky to go 500 yards.

I Had a bad transmission, got it rebuilt with warranty after a mechanic friend recommended them to me. They gave 2 yr warrarnty and thats exactly how long it lasted, like Magic- The car was a beater, and i didnt need to last any longer than that anyways. $1000 for another 2 yrs wasnt a bad choice when i didnt have the money to buy another used car.

How about rebuilding an 80's Japanese MT? I'd probably replace the bearings and syncros.

The Toyota dealership told us to never change my transmission fluid because it has a sealed transmission and the oil is good forever. That was a lie, I would recommend to change the fluid at around 60k to avoid future issues. I have the same fluid in my transmission for 15 years and 217k miles and my transmission is still functioning properly but I definitely have money put away just incase I need to rebuild which I know a great shop that does awesome work.

Out the gate at about 45 seconds... Props scotty. Absolutely true. Generaly speaking most people donthave the skills to rebuild a transmission that new. They are definitely sophisticated creatures and the most complex mechanical part in a car. They have alwayse been. Unless youve been trained to work on transmissions LEAVE THEM ALONE.

Older cars it's not that hard. Newer cars...just like with everything, they make it more complicated then it really isn't and don't want the owner to rebuild/maintain it. Cars. Phones. Fridges. Pc's. Etc.

I rebuilt a 5spd manual for my Nissan back in 2001. Took 2 weekends and about 800 in parts from Nissan (bearings, synchros, seals). It worked great afterwards. Good experience, but I would not do it again.

please do not think seal additives will stop a leak they are for something that is a very very light seep. you need to replace what the part is that is leaking. or you could damage your motor or sensors/actuators because you will not get the correct oil pressure to operate like it should.

Exactly plus the professionals fix transmissions on a bench during a day ... the make it sn inventory as most brands use the same transmissions . The retail place takes your car in and removes the transmission and takes one out of inventory & installs it and works on your to replace the inventory Tells you your vehicle will be ready Friday afternoon They tell the same to every customer

I rebuild engines and transmission he's right it's not easy you need expensive tools not from harbor freight. Sometimes there's a point of no return and there's a point of return I've turned down countless of engine and transmission rebuilds just because of the amount of money that it would cost versus one already done
@qmak97034 жыл бұрын
P1811 just replace the pressure control solenoid . It's the most common failure for these transmissions between 00-05. I replaced mine when all other shops said I needed rebuild. 04 impala with 180k miles, and ran just fine until 250k. Had to get rid of the car due to body rot, not the transmission or engine. If you find a real transmission shop, they will do it for $500 or less... anyone else will sell you a rebuild. If P1811 is the only issue, then the rest will be OK. I've had it done on plenty of GM cars that lasted up to 300k miles after.
