I could not hit a fairway wood off the ground without topping it. I took these tips up to the driving range and practiced over and over again. It’s worked! I’m hitting some lovely shots with my 5 wood now. My local club is made up of more long holes than short so this has really helped! Thanks for such clear, well explained instructions.

Number one reason people can't hit fairway wood is they swing too hard, thinking this has to be long I have to crush it. You can get a wood to go 200 yards with a half swing, work your way up to a full swing, go easy for sweet contact. Keep your balance, feet well apart.
@TruGolfAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Agree with contact being key and building up swing is a good practice but I think with the right method, I would hit it as hard as you can in balance. I find more speed = more commitment from me and generally better results

It depends on whether your shifting weight laterally to much or swinging out to in. But a simple tip on range would be striking off a high tee to encourage more of a sweeping move. Happy to help with an online lesson, let me know if you would like some info?

Nice, easy to understand instruction! New subscriber here... from Texas! Would love to see some course management videos. At 62 years old, I can no longer hit 300+ yard drives...( 30 years ago I was competing in Amateur long drive contests. )...and I am still struggling with my long Irons and Hybrids. I carried a 4 handicap for years, and I still have a very good short game that gets me out of trouble quite a bit. But, I have friends my age that are still playing very well...of course without my physical ailments...but...I think if I could learn to hit my long Irons and Hybrids without the huge slice...I might be able to lower my handicap down to at least a 10 or 11, from the 16 handicap I am currently holding.

I've found that if you can line the ball up equidistant to your feet then the ball will fly. If your address feels awkward, you're getting it right. Played this am and topped only one as opposed to about 15.
@TruGolfAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean playing the ball in the centre of your stance? If so, I would try moving the ball more forwards but focus on getting pressure to the front foot in the downswing and extending your arms into impact

@richtfingers4 жыл бұрын
Michael Britton FWIW I would suggest that your arms and body are getting out of synch with each other. Also, for a very quick fix, make sure you are looking at the ball when you hit it .... you might just be swiping at it, looking at the ball as you hit it helps the body and arms naturally hit solidly at the ball.

@@richtfingers thank you so very much for your reply great I'll get on the driving range tomorrow and give it try at last I seem to some sensible comment many thanks
@TruGolfAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, most mis-strikes come from a loss / change in posture. I.e early extension will generally cause heel strike but players often compensate by pulling arms in or rising the handle and strike out of the toe. I would need to really see your swing to actually help, let me know I can send info on online lessons?

My chipping around the green gets me up znd down on average 2 to 3 tines a round. I bomb one, duff a 3W followed by a 5H duff. Last tound, I blew every par 5... probably 8 shots on 4 par 5's. 2 weeks Ill have it nipped in the bud.

No power in that move. It's the hard swings that are topped.
@TruGolfAcademy4 жыл бұрын
I can’t agree with that. Are you saying your players don’t hit it hard?
@highsnburgers48624 жыл бұрын
@@TruGolfAcademy Ok, no need to agree. Here's my unsolicited observations. I'm sure you play very well, but you have some power leaks. Your head moves off the ball much more than your CG (belly button area) while your left heel stays down - upper body sway. If your going keep the left heel down, no need to move your head so far off the ball in the backswing. Good shoulder turn, but that bent left arm at the top robs you of some pop. You might need to move the ball forward to hit a high one with this -> Keep the left arm straighter, get your sternum over the ball or just slightly in front at impact and time the hit with the left hip snapping backwards. Get all the weight to the outside of the left heel - the front of your left shoe should curl up more on the follow through. You'll be hitting more with your body weight and compress the ball more.
@TruGolfAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Okay thanks. Don’t know what this has to do with my video subject on topping fairway woods. On a separate not I can’t straighten my left arm as broke as a kid and keeping it dead straight won’t increase speed. In fact it can act as an extra lever. Obviously if completely collapsed and creating a throwaway that would be a different story. Cheers
@highsnburgers48624 жыл бұрын
@@TruGolfAcademy I don't hit it as well when I keep the left locked straight throughout the swing either. Some people do though - those that have elbows that lock a bit past flat (180*) without adding tension, like Tiger. Sergio Garcia goes a bit over 180* for example - I believe it helps with consistency. Some have elbows that don't quite get to flat 180* and for them trying to do so only adds tension. I'm in the latter camp also. Your swing is smooth and controlled - on the course, that's better than swinging out of your socks like I tend to do. I've found that FITTING the shaft flex of the FW woods is key. Many have sets that match steel irons shafts with whippy graphite FW woods and it's hard to adjust tempo.
