That is one beautiful bike. I'm not a big fan of the curvy frame tubes that tend to be the norm these days, it's lovely to see a classic looking frame again, especially the way the seat tubes run in the same line as and only slightly offset to the top tube. Great job Canyon, really great. One thing though Doddy. Did nobody say the name Koblenz while you were at the factory? The natural way for a Brit to pronounce it is the way you did, the O being short and the accent being on the B. The O is actually pronounced long and the B is softer. Imagine it being spelt Coe-blenz and you'll get it : ))

Seems like canyon have made some good moves with this iteration of the strive. The fact its 29 only makes a lot of sense too. The last model wasnt particularly agressive in the slackest mode, and it doesn't look like its changed too much. Some might complain because they felt the slacker mode could have been more dh focused and it pedalled decently well even in low setting. However steepening it up cant hurt those who really need to do some long days in the saddle and up climbs. But overall for 2019 it looks promising. Good to see they revised how the shapeshifter works too, cause it was a little clunky for some people from what I know.

I currently ride the 2018 Strive and can not rate it highly enough. I smash out miles of XC stuff, had it on races like Ard Rock and laps of BPW. It does it all. I had a feeling they would go 29er as they are now all the rage although I am little disappointed they did not add a 650b version. For me I like how the smaller wheels handle. Be interesting to see how the 29” wheel version compares to the 27.5” in a back to back timed lap. I do however really like the changes to the shapeshifter. I am yet to have any problems with mine but I have heard lots of stories. The new system looks slightly more intuitive.

Many thanks Doddy! On paper it seems that this bike was designed to go against 2018 Genius. I wonder if it's possible to mount a gopro facing the shocks of the bikes and do an anti-squat experiment( on trail and paved road) demonstrating what happens under pedaling load. A lot of writers and journos get anti squat wrong and always make claims about countering Bob with smoother pedaling technique; They can't grasp the fact that kinematics of the bike don't physical change just because you alter your pedal stroke. The only way you can alter kinematics is by changing sag and or the chainline(gearing). Again thanks for all the great content.
@mathman01016 жыл бұрын
Doddy great video and content. You tried to pack quite a bit into the video. However the top end bikes deserve a little bit of separation between the technical and the ride review. Both should be in-depth. My suggestion is to do: 1:) a live technical build of the bike at the factory with you observing and asking the questions from the mechanics. We need to build the mechanics and engineers together they are the ones that truly understand the design principles. As part of the live build with engineers and mechanics You need to ask lots of detailed questions on geometry, suspension, dropper posts, hubs, groupsets, bearings, bottom brackets etc that gives the viewer and purchaser a great overview of the quality and design principles of each component. You could keep the technical build to around 1h30. Many of us buying such expensive bikes deserve lots of details and hopefully it spurs manufacturers to build high quality engineered machines that ride like a dream. 2.) a full outdoor review with trail, race riding and detailed description of how things are working.

Well it certainly does look great and the 'Shapeshifter' system seems like a genuinely innovative and functional design, however it's hard to imagine the left hand side of the handlebar with the suspension platform levers, dropper post lever _and_ shock / fork lock-out levers!! ... kudos to them for providing the internal routing option to run a shock lock-out, but I can see the cockpit getting very 'busy' and complicated with all that going on if it were utilised. Perhaps if there was a way to link the shock lock-out with the Shapeshifter system so it all works off the one set of levers, although this would mean it'd be an 'all in' kind of system and wouldn't allow for the versatility of separate platform / shock operations. -- Thoughts?

Hello, I'm thinking of buying the new Canyon Strive. I'm 191 cm tall and I'm not sure which size I should take? I know that Canyon recommends XL from 188cm but I'm afraid it won't be as agil as the L, especially with the long reach and 29er. Would the L be too small for me? I’m considering a new bike, i’m 5’9’’ and 180 lbs. I’m leaning toward a 27.5 medium frame. But I like the idea of the larger wheel size of the 29er, but I think this would put the overall size too large. Do you think a 29er with a small frame is the solution? Oh, and it would be an ebike as well. Thanks, Scott.

Bought Canyon Spectral for my wife last year. She is quite happy with it, but Imo cable management (especially in the area of bottom bracket- large cable loops) could be better. Sadly I must say that at the time my wife bought her bike, Canons' customer support was basically non-existent. Good luck reaching them via email or phone. Don't get me wrong here, Canyon is making quite nice and affordable bikes, but if someone want to buy one, should arm her/himself with patience, or at least check some mtb forums for current situation with orders at Canyon.

Good looking bike... I wonder if this is one of those things which performance looks promising on the graphics, boards and computer but very hard to perceive on the trail for the average rider? 😶... I mean, how much faster can you be by adjusting on the go +/-10mm and +/-1.5 degree only? Compared to other components (e.g. stem, fork, rotors, handlebar, headset spacers) it takes a minimum of 20mm variations to start perceiving any difference. Anyhow, it is cool to see manufacturers trying new things.

Bearing in mind that you're meant to climb this in the 75deg setting, that's actually pretty much a standard reference point for Enduro bike design these days! So they've got it right on! Forget to put it in climb and yes, it's slack for climbing. But it's a tool at your disposal, and, with a little time to get used to it, the user will be using shapeshifter just as naturally as a dropper or lockouts!
@hondacota4rt6 жыл бұрын
@@gmbntech I'm aware of that, but the effective (not virtual) seattubeangle seems to be very shallow, which means you'll have a way more shallow virtual angle aswell. The further you have your seatpost extenden out of the frame, the more this comes to play. (which you can see very clearly at doddys bike)
