I am glad now there will be a database to search for old 401K. My dad is retired and he doesn't even know if he ever signed up or was automatically signed up in 401K wit previous employers. He doesn't even remember all his employers. These will help older folks that are not familiar how 401Ks worked i the past.

Change employer. Your employer uses something called ‘plan administrator’ they set the funds you can put your 401k into. While you likely wont be able to yolo it into $NVDA, some offer straight up SP500 mutual funds for example

You could also open an HSA with HSA Bank. After you get the account to I think 3,000.00 you can transfer it into an investment account and buy stocks, bonds, ETF's... Whatever your heart desires.

Funding HSA with 401k match money sounds like a great perk. Depending on your companies match policy you can max your HSA early in the year with just match funds and then just continue to pile money into the 401k afterwards.

@@othatdude30sure, you can, but most employers contribute significant $$ if you use the 401(k) path so you’re mostly incentivized or pressured to use the government’s investment vehicle because it makes more sense. The government prefers to have control over its citizens.

DO NOT BORROW AGAINST YOUR 401K. YOU NEED THAT MONEY TO LIVE FROM 65 TO 85. Just remember this: your current debt will be worth less over time, but your 401k balance will continue to grow.

just as an aside, while money that is borrowed from your 401k is placed into an account that is removed from investing... the loan interest you pay on your loan goes back into your account directly and is not paid to the recordkeeper, advisor, or employer

My work place puts the match into your 401k but then you can put annual contribution into either your 401k or pension. The pension gives 3-5% depending on your age. Pension option is great for older folks.

Yeah it would be nice to have a data base! My husband thinks that they just pocketed all the 401k of a old job he worked for that no longer in business. We've looked thru old records and it's on the pay stubs but no paper work! It's been frustrating to say the least.

No, it would be new employee contributions (not money already in your 401K). Think of it as the employer match being diverted to the other accounts rather than money used FROM your 401K.

I was able to borrow half of my money for closing costs. I paid it back in 3 years, but had a 5 year loan @ 6.5%. That was 5 years ago. They hold the other half as security.

This won’t apply to money ALREADY in your 401K. This will be applicable to new employer matching money (that never goes into your 401K, rather, to the other options).
