A mechanically disconnected but electrically connected turbo is very interesting! It could harvest all energy from the exhaust gasses. No more need to off-gas via a waste gate. It would also completely eliminate turbo lag. Exiting!
@evguenict6 ай бұрын
Kinetic to electric and then electric to kinetic does not seem good for efficiency purposes. I read studies on e-turbos, and the problem with harvesting energy from the turbine is that it is very efficient only with a high flow of exhaust gases. That’s why you can find it in F1 cars with 850hp, or in trucks. It’s too expensive for everyday use, so combining it with less efficient systems due to the double conversion is questionable. I have a lot of doubts. But testing is the key for the future
@Conservator.6 ай бұрын
@@evguenict You are right, thanks for pointing that out. Minor detail: on F1 engines, the MGU-H is placed on the shaft of the turbo. Teams are free to place it in the middle (which was a brilliant idea of Mercedes at the time) or on the outside. I think Ferrari is the only team with such a configuration now.
@CerberusTenshi6 ай бұрын
@@evguenict While it may not be as efficient in terms of raw boomt, the detached system is likely to be more efficient in terms of boost delivery. Even at idle, the turbine spins, charging the little battery and that power can be used any time it's required. It's pretty much a power on demand system.
@evguenict6 ай бұрын
@@CerberusTenshi An engine at idle is in a balanced state, consuming just enough fuel to keep itself running while compensating for friction. Harvesting power from the turbine restricts the engine. Thus, adding resistance to the turbine causes the engine to consume more fuel to maintain its idle state. In terms of energy, I agree that theoretically, you get more out of it, making it strictly more efficient, but at the cost of higher fuel consumption. Don’t forget that generators are most efficient at a specific speed. Sudies I read suggest e-turbo performs well at either low or high speeds. If you aim for both, the complexity will be extremely high, not to mention the inefficiency of double conversion.

Let's clear up some info: The 919 did use a hybrid turbo, but not the same as the new 911. The 919 used a mechanical turbo plus an electric turbocompound down stream of the mechanical turbo to harvest excess energy. These are two seperate devices. The eTurbocompound is a turbine wheel coupled to a high speed generator. It can only produce energy, no boost assistance. The Porsche patent is for a "drive by wire" eTurbo where the compressor and turbine are electrically coupled by motors and power electronics instead of by a shaft in a traditional eTurbo. The major downside to this is the very high power level of each motor/inverter gorup driving the compressor and turbine. It can be 100kW+ with this size aerodynamic components. It's better to mechancially drive compressor via a shaft coming from the turbine and mount the motor to the shaft to add or substract torque as BorgWarner did for this application. BTW, eTurbo's can be 12/24/48/400/800VDC. It's only a matter of current driving potential in the power electronics and the electric motor. There are practical limits to how much current can be driven at certain voltages before it makes sense to jump to the next voltage class and cut the current. Amperage=$^3 when it comes to power electronics.

The patent turbo probably won't be used because there's probably parasitic losses going from exhaust pressure to rotation to electrical to rotation to intake pressure. The upside is maybe they could use a different type of exhaust turbine specifically for electrical power generation instead of spools speed.

As a 919 super fan, this is what I’ve wanted to see for years. But uh, I kinda expected it to be more impressive. Personally, I think it’s the 911 heritage in this instance. Super excited about the new hybrid 992.2 GTS, even though it's way way out of my price range. Apparently, the off-the-line acceleration, boosted by the e-motor in the gearbox, is what makes it significantly faster. You could argue whether more energy should be harvested and a bit larger battery employed to enable slow creeping around town with the engine off. It appears Porsche has struck a decent compromise and I like that the 400V battery is positioned where it is easily serviceable and replaceable. Because that battery will experience thousands of charge cycles.

@OVERDRIVE.studios6 ай бұрын
Yup, it's called twin-charging. A very small number of production and race cars have used it, because it's really complicated. Volvo used it on some road cars, and the Lancia Delta S4 had it.
@BizAutomation4U6 ай бұрын
Sounds complicated which may be a maintenance nightmare. Maybe not likely to be exciting to drive compared to current 911s even though likely a little faster but not much (linear power bands are likely and boring). I'd rather buy used and tune the car, with the more conventional 911s.
@almac92036 ай бұрын
Porsche engineers are the best in the business and they know what they are doing plus they have tested this system for millions of miles. The engine does seem very complicated so you probably can forget working on it yourself.

I’m not an engineer, but it seems that exhaust gasses can be used to spin a generator that sends power to a battery, and that same battery can store energy regenerated from braking. My question is whether that “free” electrical power should spin a turbo or just directly power a motor.
@kooooons6 ай бұрын
The same reason, why forced induction works in the first place: The power you need to compress air is lower than the power you gain from boost. It's a delicate balance, though. The engine has a limit of how much air it can take. As long as the power you can extract from the exhaust turbine is equal to the power that goes into compressing air at the limit of the engine, it doesn't make sense to directly boost the crankshaft.
