It's a nice feature but i think it didn't do a good job at 9:56. Looks like it made the building round. The distortion in the bottom left of the bulding is a bit weird, isn't it?

How do you find the screen when using live view on the m10? I'm currently shooting on an m240 but the live view is quite tricky especially if the camera is at a slight angle. Do you have any issues with the LV with this camera whilst shooting?

Great video! I had the impression that the LPC needs to know which lens is mounted. Do you know if this is correct, or can it work with 3rd party lenses? Maybe by selecting a lens code manually? Would be curious to hear if you’ve tried this? Thanks

@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Wonder too, would be great in the Q2, SL2, SL2-S
@phototristan3 жыл бұрын
Not sure on that because the feature relies on gyroscope leveling hardware in the camera. I'm not sure of the Q2 has that or not.

@@phototristan Just checked the manual and on page 86 states it has Horizontal Display which means the camera knows the orientation held and shows a digital level green when aligned and red when its not. I'm guessing that has to work by gyro???

Genius, great review. I have and old SL and I wondered if you had any tips for processing DNG raw files in Photoshop to as far as possible preserve Leica colours? Many thanks in advance, Marcus
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Make the color profiles matching and make sure your screen is correctly calibrated. Then all will be fine.
@itl73063 жыл бұрын
Great video and explanation, thank you. Is the new feature only applicable to photos taken after the firmware was installed in the camera? In other words, if I go back to RAW files from a few months ago taken with my M10-P and try to use the feature on Lightroom, will it work as effectively as if the shots were captured with the firmware already installed in me camera? Also, how would you say panorama work would change with this new feature - should I treat each frame individually first before I combine them into a panorama in Lightroom? Thanks a lot!
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Good questions. I think the feature is available on RAW files shot after doing the firmware update. Older images (before updating the firmware) do not have that metadata information which then LR uses to apply the perspective correction. On panoramas, I would treat them individually before stitching in LR or PS.
@DeurenCoUk3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, do you think that there is a loss in quality of the image in that not only is it tilting the image to straighten the horizon but also pushing the image backwards and forwards on the vertical plane? Just wonder if you would have a higher quality image if it was shot straight rather than this type of digital correction? Thanks
@Case167103 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is definitely image quality loss, but it likely doesn’t matter. Any time you rotate an image to an angle other than 90 or 180 degrees, there is interpolation (which results in aliasing and quality loss). Same applies to skewing to correct for falling lines. Straightening the horizon means cropping the corners off, so that’s going to give you lower resolution. None of this is likely to be noticeable unless one is pixel peeping though, so whether or the reduced quality matters is up to you.
@dell-tone64722 жыл бұрын
I use it professionally and even in big prints I see no loss of quality at all.

Makes me wonder why other cameras haven't offered this for a long time. The digital levels have been around for a long time. Are they not recorded in the meta data?

The Pentax K1 II has a similar feature if I am not mistaken.

I have the M10 Monochrom. DNG files in LR are not working with one button push, this normal for now?
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the M10-Mono will be supported by Lightroom soon too. If you look at the Adobe website I referred to, it lists the M10-R and M10-P but not yet the M10-Mono although the new firmware as posted by Leica is available for the M10-Mono already. I did not try yet the M10-Mono with the new feature, will do in the next days and see how it goes.

So to make use of this feature in RAW, from what I understand here. You have to shoot in both JPEG & RAW to get Lightroom to automatically adjust for perspective using the metadata from said JPEG in the RAW file?
@phototristan3 жыл бұрын
I think you can just shoot RAW, it writes the to the metadata of the image. You have to tell Lightroom to use the camera data however. There's a setting for that.

@@phototristan I tried this the PC control with my M10M in DNG. Nothing happens when I click on the upper left icon as suggested in the video! What do I need to do to tell LR to use my camera data?

Hi @phototristan. I did some research and this is a bug by Adobe relating to the functionality perspective control and the M10M. So I anxiously await the next LR upgrade and hopefully this will be addressed.

Hello, Thank you for the video but unfortunately as a M10 Monochrom owner if I have the perspective control feature on my camera Lightroom cannot correct automatically my file. I have checked everything from my Lightroom setup to my version everything should be ok. I notice on your video thay only M10-R and M10-P are supported by Lightroom right now, do you confirm? All the best
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Hi Benjamin, just yesterday I tried again to find a smart way to bring this to work in Lightroom with the Mono - no luck so far. You get the feature in the M10-Mono firmware, it also works very good for the JPG, but Adobe seems to be lagging behind in implementing the post-processing feature also for the M10-Mono RAW files. For the M10-R and M10-P it works like a charm, for the M10-Mono it seems we need to wait until Adobe incorporates the "Upright" feature also for the Mono. Strange though since this looks like it would have been a piece of cake to have it for all three M's immediately.
@benjamindidier91053 жыл бұрын
@@mathphotographer Thank you very much at least it’s not my mistake. 😉 Let’s hope Adobe will fix it very soon.

I guess the straight horizon mode is suitable for cityscape architecture and such but it’s somewhat of an antithesis to what street photography is about. I mean, imagine Winogrand having this accidentally on if he had shot digital.
@Gravitys-NOT-a-force3 жыл бұрын
I, too, had thought about Gary Winogrand when I was watching the video. Mathphotographer should have discussed some of the drawbacks to this new feature.
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Good point. But remember, this feature if switched-on is a "pure option" without any downside or giving up the original image composition. If you do not push the "Upright" button in Lightroom, the original image in RAW is at your disposal in addition to the perspective-corrected setting so you can anytime just work with the uncorrected image and keep the perspective in original setting.
I think it's important here to differentiate between straightening an overall image, and straightening converging or diverging lines within the image. The former is easily manipulated by the user at the time of image capture, the latter necessitates a software intervention. I was a bit confused at the beginning of the video, because I kept thinking, "Why the hell would I have taken that photo with such a crooked frame (unless I was drunk)." lol
@Michelle_Wellbeck3 жыл бұрын
I agree, I would think if anything turning on perspective control would take away control from the photographer carefully composing their picture.
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Lol - I was intentionally going for a really weird wrong perspective to DEMONSTRATE how well the PC works. Clearly, in the sample images I had in Lightroom the more realistic ones are those which need "a bit of" correction and not too much crop :)

Do you have to shoot DNG and Jpeg for this to work? Or just DNG is fine? Thanks

You videos are so informative. Thank you for making them. I currently own a M240 and a Q2. Now I want an Sl2, Sl2-s or an M10-R. I have no idea how to make the decision. I love the simplicity of the M but think for my commercial work I should probably get an SL. I guess it comes down to lenses. Do you prefer M or SL glass? Which kit, in your opinion, is the most versatile for everyday and professional work? I know this is a subjective question but I’d appreciate your thoughts.
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
For commercial work the SL2 is likely the best choice among the cameras you mentioned. The L-Mount lens system is huge by now (Leica, Panasonic and Sigma lenses available, but also a lot of cheaper Chinese brands) and via adapter any Leica M lens can be mounted too plus lenses from the older Leica R system and many other camera brands.

Also offiziell ist sie noch eine M10 gemäss hot shoe Bezeichnung, aber die Innereien sind M10-P und der künstliche Horizont ist ja der Schlüssel zum neuen Feature 👌🏻

@@mathphotographer Oh and here for the ones in english: I got an M10 with a small upgrade (M10-P top plate, touch screen & artificial horizon) and on my M10 i could install the latest firmware update as well, even though my M10 is still an M10 according to the hot shoe engraving. So i guess the artificial horizon opens the gate for this firmware update.
