that was because the general public assumed that sebaceous filaments were either blackheads, whiteheads, and even sometimes pores. it wasnt until the internet had doctors like you educate us that they were in fact none of those, but a whole different thing. people have been wanting to remove them for ages, except now, they actually know what to call it 😂

Agree Dr. Dray re: sebaceous filaments. For years I had several on the top of my nose. I plucked them and they came right back. I started consciously using skin care in about 2010 and they disappeared. My skin now is non-textured due to double cleansing and actives. Never heard the term until I learned it from you four years ago.

Dr. Dray can you share your thoughts on the new Paula’s choice mandelic acid + lactic acid AHA toner? I’m 46 and still have acne prone/sensitive skin. Just fyi I went thru menopause at age 29. Had to have a total hysterectomy and I’m not on HRT. I’m on tretinoin (0.015% + 4% Niacinamide) I also use the BHA salicylic acid toner too. I use both not at the same time on nights I’m not using my tretinoin obviously or in the morning always using SPF. I do the painting technique like you do and I notice I use a lot less product. Love!! Since using the new toner my one sun spot on my face has really lightened (the tretinoin had not done anything) and my acne for the first time is 99% gone. This stuff has been like a miracle. It’s super gentle. I’d just really like your opinion of the ingredient deck etc. I respect you a ton. Hope u are having a wonderful weekend ❤

I think the awareness of sebaceous filaments might track with the availability of Japanese and then Korean skincare. Japanese products at least have long made people conscious of "strawberry nose" and of visible pores in general, and around 2015 seems to be when the E. Asian skincare market really took off outside E. Asia. As a teen in the 90s i was always conscious of mine, but just figured them to be another feature of "acneic" skin, while it was the huge pimples and scarring that gave me the most grief.

I feel like that when the pore strips came along, people became aware of the sebaceous filaments and then developed the obsession with pulling them out over and over. I got the impression that this manual removal method only irritated skin more and that gentle cleansing is a better way to cut down on the amount of sebum buildup in those pores.

To be honest, I’m a bit older than Dr Dray & I just learned from her last year that they were not blackheads. I WAS unhealthily obsessed with those for a long time. I think that, as the facts about SFs vs blackheads have spread, unethical people want to re-monetize the fear and focus on them. Once I discovered a tiny bit of friction (gentle silicone cleansing brush) solved the problem, I haven’t spent a cent extra on them. That’s a problem for the skincare profiteers.

I've had friends pleasantly surprised how good it is when they used it. I get the mushroom shaped popcorn from a local store that is run by Mennonites. It is fresh tasting with very small hulls, and my Yorkie's favorite. Question about sebasceous filament: Is that the same as a pore that repeatedly clogs (and hurts) usually from a product with talc? I have only one on the side of my nose and The Ordinary Salicylic Acid takes about three days to heal it. I've had it for years and is annoying.
