I always close my eyes at the dentist. Mainly so that I don’t have to see who all is working on my teeth, I don’t have to actually think about being at the dentist, and so that I don’t have an anxiety attack. I hate the dentist. (On another note): I have a small mouth, so every single time they ask me to open my mouth and ask for me to open it wider (I physically can’t) so what do they do without at least warning me? Is they place something in my mouth to make my mouth open wider, like I know you have a job to do, but I can’t help how small my mouth is, at least give me a warning before doing that. 😂

​@@Eleise20I always tell people before using a bite block but the purpose isn't to stretch you open it's to keep you open because you are most likely slowly closing your mouth without knowing it and that can be very dangerous. You don't wanna bite on the hand piece. Also a bite block can help your jaw not get so tired/sore afterwards. But they definitely should explain that.

I will preface by saying: This is just my personal explanation as to why it feels weird or awkward when shampooing a client, and they have their eyes open. First is touch. It wouldn’t be weird if the touch were not involved. But frankly, a shampoo service is a massage. It would be like watching your massage therapist as she massaged you. The eye contact makes it feel too personal. Bordering on sensual. This is particularly the case when as a woman, your shampooing a man. Your hoping they’re not envisioning you in a sexual way. (I hope that doesn’t come across as boastful) Second, is the view. The view of someone standing above you is usually not flattering. The client can see up your nose, and if your over 40, skin doesn’t look amazing on the face from that angle. Third, is the positioning of your tits. (If your a woman) They are right in the clients face if your well endowed, and even more so if your of short stature. Fourth, it makes me feel like I need to say something. Being gazed at by a stranger who is only inches away, in silence, feels very very awkward. If there’s a conversation going on, it does cut down on the torturous feeling, but it’s still not preferable. I’m sure this is going to be offensive to some people, especially extroverts. The things I listed are even more amplified by those who have a reserved, or introverted personality. But to those who still don’t get it, or who are offended by these feelings, remember it’s not personal, it’s just one of the things that comes along from being in the hair/customer service industry. Obviously it’s not that big of a deal, but hopefully this gives some insight into the mind of your hair stylist. 👍
