New Civic Wagon Suspension Setup!(Dobinson/Bilstein)

I've been dreaming of putting this setup in the wagon for months! I ordered the Dobinson CRV Springs a while back with the intent on pairing them with the Bilstein struts. The Bilstein struts finally made it in and I'm very impatient. So in this video I knock it out and install the next set up. I'm super excited to be able to try them out in a real world situation and break them in good. For now we shall see, one good thing.. they look INCREDIBLE. Wowza.

Kind of like my new motor mounts that are the wrong threads where they pin to the frame... wish I had checked that out before installing them like I always would have if doing the job for someone else.

Thanks for documenting your trials with suspension setups with these double wishbone Hondas. I have a 01' CRV and I'm digging through the possibilities for engineering a reasonable bang-for-buck coilover for soaking up the road, while maintaining ride height and suspension travel. I have those monroe quick struts in the front at the moment - it rides pretty stiff as you were saying but not too bad. Besides an awful chirp in the drivers side shock when cold... and it's been winter for a few months so I'm trying to get a quality shock absorber system sorted out so that noise can be put to bed before it gets cold out again. That chirp could be the grease congealing in the lower ball joint (sealed unit, can't service it without taking it apart), but I'd rather spend money on new shocks than a ball joint. Call it an upgrade from an attempted fix. With your setup, it seems like your front spring perch length (top and bottom) applies too much preload to those linear springs. How far does the front suspension droop / compress when jacked/dropped? If it doesn't compress very far on the static weight of the vehicle then you may need to consider a different kind of spacer for the ride height you are looking for. I'm saying this mainly because you mentioned how bouncy the ride was, which most likely means that the spring is overpowering the damper due to the preload. Most springs are designed to hold a certain amount of weight and are engineered with a particular natural frequency in mind when the load on that spring experiences fluctuations, where the particular damping rate is considered at that point. Off-road vehicles use a lower natural frequency engineered into their suspensions so the vehicles are more predictable and controllable when crawling terrain. I'll be sure to share any progress I make when building out my parts list / etc ! Thanks for putting out the content that you do, it's very easy to watch!

Much much appreciated! That's great insight too. I did a ton of research and ended up just going with the Dobinson setup for now. From what I could tell from their spec sheet they were lightly sprung but I'll have to give them time to break in before I can really tune them. Thanks for the feedback!

What lower shock forks are you using in the front? The accord shocks seem to have a larger diameter shock.

They do. I'm using Crv struts with Accord lower front forks

That was a great video. I am intrigued that you got the springs back on without the compressor. Us Honda folks wheel unconventional rigs with nearly 0 off-road aftermarket support. Sometimes we have to learn from trial and error. Keep us posted on the wear in! They look sick!

Man it was a complicated set up! I had to attach the strut to the fork and bolt the top hat on the chassis. Then with a jack stand propped under the brake let it down slowly and guide the strut into the top hat while the spring was compressing 😄. Yeah no kidding! Zero aftermarket support so we have to get fancy!
