I try to use original media like floppy disks, cds, cartridges, not modern adaptors with sd cards. I think using a modern replacement kinda defeats the purpose or part of the charm. oh, and I hate digital only stuff, I always prefer phisical media.

I always prefer physical copies of games, I usually buy a download copy as well to save my consoles drive from over heating and wearing out. Physical copies can be great when developers put an effort in. Take blu ray films as an example, you get some really cheap looking releases at expensive prices. However I really like it when a film is released in a really nice steelbook version, its like a work of art. I used to race off to either W H Smiths or Boots on my Raleigh Burner BMX. I used to have a BBC model B computer at the time.

I recently bought a physical copy (the cartridge version) of Sam's Journey. Mainly to support the developers and to own a modern game for an old machine. I actually don't like jump and run games that much and I never really intended to play it. I considered it to be a rather expensive collector's item. But when I got this nice box and the goodies inside and all that, I decided to give it a shot...and you know what? It's great! Not because it's for a retro system or because it's physical, but because it's just a great game and REALLY worth the money. When playing it, you forget that you are playing on a 35+ years old machine. So, yes...go out there (virtually) and buy these physical copies...you might be surprised of what you get. And if it's for the C64, buy Sam... It's great!

I'm a huge ColecoVision fan and have supported CollectorVision since their inception by buying every one of their ColecoVision releases and a few other ways as well. They have gone through quite a number of different box designs, materials and quality over the years but unfortunately always seem to have been lacking in this area. I'm more often than not left disappointed with the box including their latest incarnation which is the glossy thin card style that you received. That said, I'm hugely grateful that they exist and produce games for our favourite systems and will continue to support them. From the nostalgic perspective of buying physical boxed games, I couldn't agree with you more. I remember being a member of one of those stupid video game clubs where you have to buy a certain number of games each year, although I was annoyed about having to buy from their often poor selections. Nevertheless, I was always so excited to get the physical games and boxes and in particular remember The Hobbit which even came with the book. The excitement was always slightly tempered by then having to wait 15 to 20 mins while the game loaded on my C64. Ah, those were the days :)

Oh no #nightmarefuel!! I remember typing away for hours and not even noticing the sun had gone down as the glow of the portable TV lit the area and then nothing but an error (or shitloads on unknown ones) and wondering what had gone wrong and getting someone else to proof what you entered against the printed programme in the mag. You were really looking forward to that game and they'll screwed it up and depending on your level of programming skill/capabilities, with the more basic stuff, you could try debug it or had to wait till 1-2 months later to get the real bit of right code to replace the bent code and then even more disappointment as it was not as good as you'd perceived it would be. Ohh the good AND bad old days!!

The C64 was my favourite system in the 8-bit era. One of the reasons it became an overlooked retro-machine as time went on was that the difficulty of the games was then very high and became atrocious in the days of emulators and input lag. So I kind of understand why developers made this game a bit easy.

What I had forgotten along the years and decades - and what kinda feels funny today is, that on a 14" CRT the high as a kite resolution of 320x200 actually kinda feels 'hi-res.' Especially when I see it in games etc. in contrast to the C64's multi-colour mode. It looks surprisingly sharp.

I like how more and more parts, such as cartridges, can be reproduced today using molds or 3d printing. If only they could reproduce things like the SID chip (why, WHY haven't they done this yet?!), you could probably build a full Commodore 64 out of newly manufactured parts. I noticed that the box says that Sydney Hunter was captured in South America, but the Yucutan Peninsula is in _North_ America.

this reminded me of "rick dangerous". I spent hours playing "rick dangerous" on my XT when I still had a green monochrome monitor. you know what I miss from those great times? every system was different and had its personality, its own colors (or lack of) and its own sounds. we could tell what system it was just by seeing a screenshot on a magazine or just by listening to five seconds of a game. now all the major systems are basically the same and games look and sound the same on every platform.
@asgerms6 жыл бұрын
The game being "easy" means that it is retro-accurate. What I mean is, I recently (within the last handful of years) restored and started re-using my computers from childhood (C64 and Apple II). I haven't been playing games since very early 90s (PCs and Doom), but after all these years I simply forced through the games like I never could back in the day. Commando? Completed on first run. Blue-max? Completed, first run, never knew there was a city. Dropzone? Waay too hard back in the day, had it but never played it. Today, it's just about right. And so on.. Point is, most games really weren't that hard. They were hard back *then* and are remembered as such, but not hard by today's standard (exceptions as allways). Great vid!
@RMCRetro6 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting point and if you're playing the digital version you can also have an advantage through the use of modern controllers which may be better suited to a game. There were some rock hard games though and some simply unfair or worse still, impossible to actually finish. Manic Miner...one day....I will beat you
@asgerms6 жыл бұрын
Nope, I play them *exactly* original. Real hardware, real crt, real joystick, no cheats or anything. The very same equipment I was on back then. I expected to be a pathetic old fart with 0 reflexes, and was very surprised. I just think "life" got gradually higher paced and complex throught out the decades, without one noticing it. And now, the 2018 version of "you" is super-charged compared to the 1988 version. Remember Garfield? The CosbyShow? Benny Hill? No disrespect, but I dare you attempt watching these today, you will not believe how slow it is. Cheers!
@AthleticDesign6 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with old games being easy, but I do agree with getting better at games with age. Reaction time actually peaks at age 39 and the decline after that is very, very slow. I, at least, also feel I am smarter today, more able to analyze patterns and how things in the code produce pseudo randomness in the game.
@asgerms6 жыл бұрын
Didn't know "that" about reaction time. Kinda fits nicely with picking Armstrong and Aldrin for the first attempts at moon-landings; they were 39 I think : max reaction and very knowledgeable. But as I wrote, there are exceptions. Dropzone, Uridium, Mega apocalypse, Robotron (Apple-II version!) etc, still demands some attention (at least for me). Point is though, try actually playing them for real and not go by memories. Not meant to bad-mouth old games (or old TV shows); grew up on it and absolutely love anything retro.
@AthleticDesign6 жыл бұрын
Well, on Uridium I definitely agree! Found it hard back then, find it hard now. But you have a point - I have a feeling I could get further in the game today than I could back in the 80s.

Thanks for a great video. The game looks awesome! If one only had a cave with a C64 in it.... To comment on one thing for makers out there, I never understood the need people have to put overly bright LEDs in everything. That's probably gonna blind you when playing in a darker room (which you shouldn't!) and I usually end up painting or taping over LEDs. A dimmed LED on the bottom would have been enough for troubleshooting and provide some cool LED lighting.

You're a hard man to please in terms of packaging, Neil. But still your critcism is fair given the price. On the other hand, being more a Nintendo-minded person myself, cardboard boxes like this are somewhat my standard. I do own some big box PC games and some of them are really nice in terms of quality. But, honestly, i always loved the SEGA (Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis) way of packaging games in plastic boxes with a nice uniformly designed inlay cover. Sturdy, nicely stackable and easy to clean. Otherwise, great and honest review and expertly documented (as if i expect anything less from you). Thanks!

I know! Don't get me wrong the art is lovely and the contents are great but at $72 I think it's fair to want better, especially given recent examples on the C64 like Galencia which comes in a lovely thick card box. I also love those "VHS" style plastic cases they keep everything safe, look good and just never age.
@KuraIthys6 жыл бұрын
I unfortunately lost most of my old PC game boxes through various moving accidents, but I do remember them fondly. I still mostly have the disks and manuals and other contents of the boxes, but the boxes themselves are lost. My console games meanwhile kept getting stolen. So there too I have precious little in the way of original packaging from my own childhood. I do have a few Super Famicom boxes, and while broadly similar to the western SNES boxes, they seem to have a few differences that are marginally better. Plastic tray inserts instead of cardboard, and usually a quick reference card for controls. Then again, my US copy of A Link to the Past, (I had a PAL system but owned a converter. Alas, my original SNES was also stolen. Go figure. My N64 suffered the same fate a few years later.) rather interestingly included a plastic cover that clipped onto the bottom of the cartridge to protect the edge connector. Surprisingly even though this must've been common for a while, I've never seen that kind of thing before or since on any game, even looking at what collectors own. Unfortunately, that game was... You guessed it. Stolen. Though I do have one thing left from that box, which is a map that showed the light world and the interior of the first 3 dungeons. That was an interesting inclusion. But really, what makes or breaks boxes a lot of the time is the box art itself. I rarely collect boxes these days if I can get the loose game cheaper, but when I saw the Super Famicom box art for Yoshi's Island I was so in awe of it I definitely had to make an exception. Super Famicom boxes in general have quite a different visual style to them than western boxes, but that one really stood out even then. Of the many PC boxes that have gone missing over the years the one I rather miss is the box for Sim City 2000. That white box with the gold lettering... There's just something about it... Personally I was never fond of the plastic mega drive cases. I appreciate their utility, but they always felt a little ugly to me. I have a similar feeling about the DVD style cases console games have been coming in since the 2000's or so. Those aren't ugly as such, but I find them all so generic and similar looking... It makes them all feel really lifeless and interchangeable. I was actually pleasantly surprised at Nintendo Switch boxes being a different size to the norm. It's still the same basic concept, but at least it stands out as something marginally different. The transparent form being the default has also allowed for some very impressive artwork on the inside of the cases. A simple touch, but one that does make the boxes more visually appealing. And surely visual appeal is a major factor in keeping such packaging around at all...

I loved the game and it looked fantastic. It would have taken me MUCH longer to complete... Physical retro games targeted at the right audience could be a winner. I love a manual, keyboard overlay and all the other bits you used to get, none of that is important, it would seem, these days. I would happily buy physical games and replicas of the hardware to go with it; I believe there's a market for it, until the Old Guard shuffle off this mortal coil.

Well to answer that question, I'm watching you open this new game and couldn't be more excited. ;) I think the price is fine and the package is fully featured enough. Don't be too hard on that box, there could simply no facility that makes good old school cardboard boxes anymore with the reduction in physical media across the spectrum. :| My only beef with anything like this is that low production run aspect, it tends to produce enormous scalper mark up after the run concludes that makers really need to consider second or third runs but some simply don't. :(

I think most modern retro homebrew games, depending on genre, need a level of scalability to get that feel of the game just right and even introduce rogue elements in to make it all the more frustrating and challenging. ALL developers would be wise to offer multi-level scalability to offer value for money with their product. Yep, I remember the good old days of 80's 8-bit platformers, together with everything else in general, and if there is a market for physical games today, everybody needs to raise a hand and be counted on whatever forums exist and pool that gold dust info to let developers know what the state of affairs is to offer old, and new gamers alike, a familiar or completely new experience they'll appreciate. For gamers to physically own or handle a gaming experience in their hands in the modern era of downloading platforms, as convenient and immediate as it is, still leaves you with nothing but 0's & 1's on an SSD/HDD and little of token goodness to could look at when something loaded and enhance the experience. Screen printed SD cards, custom usb drives or any additional, as of yet unknown, unique distribution service would work well in addition to disk, cartridge or download but posters and manuals have always worked. As for grabbing my games back in the 80's early 90's, I used to walk to the shop to buy my games ;-) as the local video store was the entertainment hub having racks of games to sell together with trashy 80's action movies to watch.It was epic but largely tapering off in the early 90's largely killed off by the 16-bits, but I enjoyed the experience!

I like physical releases, especially for consoles. Sitting at a PC or laptop feels like I'm getting read for work. I can't shake the feeling that I should be making some music or something. If I sit at a C64, or a MegaDrive, or an SNES, I feel read to play a game. Even those things you can put in a console or microPC, like an EverDrive, still doesn't get me ready to play a game. It's a similar feeling to playing MP3s on your computer, to putting a tape, record or CD into a dedicated player. I dunno if this entirely makes sense, or even if anyone might agree with me. The trinkets you get are nice, but for me, it's the method that dictates how I feel.

Depends on the game, if its manual heavy, its an experience to read the whole manual (and im talking about +200 pages) before you start one even launches the game, old flight sims used to come out with those, i wouldn't mind buying a game/manual for that, even tho itll set me back a bit more than just a digital download. *cough cough elite dangerous could have done that, *coughs more. thats a different topic*

I do enjoy buying physical copies if I can though it's usually the postage that kills it for me. I love the output of the VCS coders over at AtariAge but I just cannot bring myself to double the list price of the games just to get it in my hands. It's a hard thing to justify to one's partner and usually not worth the argument! I'm in the UK so buying games from, say, Psytronik is a much more appealing proposition... their packaging is pretty impressive too. ;)

Does the c64 mini have a cartridge port? I'm thinking if these remade mini consoles had cartridge ports, it could be cool if software companies made new style retro games for them. Surely the market would be big enough
@graveofmonsters40766 жыл бұрын
The minis are just emulation machines in a custom case. They're not close to the original hardware.

I bought some C64 games recently. On cartridge, disk and tape. It's good to have the games, videos and music instantly through an internet download. But the connection to it is not as strong as if you have something physical.

Can’t fully agree with the limited color palette. It has the same as with multicolor just in general not so much shading. Still very clever use of it.

They've tried to emulate a Nintendo NES style of packaging, though on your video it doesn't seem as thick - and Nintendo's weren't exactly the most robust.
@colinjohnston85196 жыл бұрын
PaulioBee why would they emulate a Nintendo box for a c64 game?? They have clearly emulated a c64 box since it is the same size but just skimped on quality..
@KuraIthys6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really do a good job of emulating the Nintendo style either. (any of them, since they varied somewhat by system and region.) Nintendo boxes are flimsy, but they're still better presented than this. Especially when you open them up. Styrofoam? Really? That's the best solution they could think of?

Try Sams Journey (must have), Galencia, planet golf and Steel Ranger. All excellent
@RMCRetro6 жыл бұрын
Galencia was a joy to play and proved good packaging is possible within a reasonable budget. I've yet to try the others
@trydowave6 жыл бұрын
I can't stress how good sams journey is as a game. Id say in terms of design, gameplay and presentation its up there with the likes of Mario on the nes (or even snes). Steel ranger is also amazing because of the new games design. Shooting while moving, save slots, maps and restart points etc. Just goes to show that the ol' c64 could produce console quality games when done right. Id really like a decent beatemu up now :). Great videos btw. From a recent subscriber.

nope it's an entirely different feel. Forced and while I've nothing against games being released this way for this great machine, an era of anything can never be recreated because there's just so much beyond simply one thing. Not being of the same era now is pretty much the biggest reason because as people we were very different anyway and we processed the experience differently to how we will now. There's actually nothing that you can do for this experience to be truly the same And anyway it doesn't even have to be because these great days are very much relived via nostalgia when you're either playing the games or physically handling both the games cases and hardware. Recreating the same thing though from buying new games for a system would really only work if the same flow of games was the same and that's never going to happen. Treated as it is though you can certainly sit down to enjoy new games

Does anybody make any list of 320x200 games? I am asking because those games are extremely pleasant for an eye. 90% of games are done in 160x200 and it really looks ... not adequate for a computer which boosts to have "fantastic graphic". So, anybody have that list? 320x200 are really nice and good games, very similiar to 256x192 on ZX Spectrum.
@SkuldChan426 жыл бұрын
I suspect the cartridge was most of the cost of that :(.
@tarstarkusz6 жыл бұрын
My biggest complaint is the price. If the digital download is ten bucks, the physical game should not be anywhere near seventy five dollars! That is just too much money AFAIC.
@El_Guapo746 жыл бұрын
Shipping was probably half of the cost
@LennyG20066 жыл бұрын
Imagine if you were one of the developers of the game, your spare time has been spent coding it, putting together the cartridge and the artwork and then putting it all in a package and sending on its voyage around the world. How much would you charge for a copy?
@RMCRetro6 жыл бұрын
The developers absolutely deserve to be rewarded for their efforts. How much? It's hard to put a figure on it but there are other games released in the last 12 months for a similar price with great packaging, and a game can only be reviewed on its own merits really... not its development background. I do hope to see more from Collectorvision though and will absolutely be buying more physical releases, it wasn't all bad
@LennyG20066 жыл бұрын
RetroManCave I agree, it is hard to put a figure on any piece of work especially when there's a limited run of a product. Maybe it's better to say it's a work of art that serves a double purpose, that of also being a game. If I'm honest I personally think that £75 plus shipping is a little steep. However, the fact that there are still developers out there who are willing to put there time in to producing software for an old system is fantastic. Maybe in years to come this type of game will increase in value due to its scarcity. One can only hope, fingers crossed.

You want great new C64 games and excellent packaging? Look no further than Protovision. Their physical releases are an order of magnitude nicer than this one, and the games are very high quality. Prices are slightly lower as well.Try "Galencia" or "Sam's Journey" for starters.
@RMCRetro6 жыл бұрын
I have indeed held a copy of Galencia... and it proves that it's entirely possible to produce high quality packaging on this budget
