Been in the business for 25+ years and a licensed HVAC contractor for 5 years. I noticed you didn't connect your temp clamps. Without seeing what your SH/SC is, how can you tell where the system is charge-wise? I do agree, even without the clamps that the head pressure is abnormally high. I'm not knocking you, I agree that the txv may be stuck (fairly common with newer American Standard/Trane systems). I see systems overcharged all the time with txv issues. Techs trying to get the suction pressure/ temp down by adding refrigerant. I agree that the ductwork was poorly designed and installed. Not a fan of upflow attic applications like this. Overall, nice job. Keep em cool brother!

Exactly. I put in a really cheap bid on some new construction homes. A company outbid me by over $1000. They installed ductwork, electric, permits the whole complete 2.5 ton Heatpump system for $4000.00. I'm sure it looks worse than this.

I never fault someone for saying Freon when referring to refrigerant. I consider it a generic term like Kleenex or Xerox. We all know what types of refrigerant goes in what system. And freon is easy to say.

kingpins9 never said they could be held liable. What I said is they condone it by signing off. they are saying that the work is acceptable. Get 3 or 4 red tags on every rough in with fees on every failed inspection (excluding fee for minor items) and the GC and the Hvac contractor would be having a conversation. And quality would improve. Most builder only care about selling the house. That means a good looking ( not necessarily the same as well built)kitchen and master bathroom. The wife is the deciding factor in all home sales where a wife is involved the builder knows this and uses it to his/her advantage.

But hey, gorgeous countertops I bet. That unit shouldn’t be in the attic to begin with. Find a spot in the center of the home, build soffits and run metal truck inside the conditioned space. I bet a 2 or 2.5 Tons is plenty with a good duct design and proper attic insulation. The failed TXV is probably from not using nitrogen when brazing... bet the compressor fails within 7 years from moisture in oil.

I’ll go to a customers house and diagnose a comfort issue due to ductwork similar to what’s in this video. After a long discussion about the problem and future mechanical problems associated with the airflow issues; most homeowners don’t care, even if they can afford to correct the problem. All you can do is move on and shake your head. On the flip side, it’s nice to get a customer who respects your professionalism and knowledge, then moves forward with you recommendations and experiences the results. It’s gratifying to correct a major issue with your knowledge.

Ask for people’s names they have done work for. Ask to see pictures of work they have done. Then ask who will be here to do work and make sure you have it inspected to make sure the job was done correctly. You could also ask for proof that they have license to be doing this work. If not sure if they are licensed, call to check on this also. Now days you have to be careful, the least expensive is not always the best. As customer, you must do your share of work to make sure you hire someone who knows what they are doing. They can tell you anything. Believe me, I’ve seen some of the work that is done out there. I know man that fixes those messes all the time. Do your part and check them out before.

1. It is a makeup air unit. Say you keep going in and out of the house while running vent fans (bathroom, kitchen) you're pushing air out of the house and creating negative pressure so when you open those doors it sucks air in to maintain equilibrium. Which means more dirt and dust comes in that you can't see and moisture. If you have it piped in directly to the unit and automated it can hopefully filter it first and pull moisture out since it hits the coil right away and you have your make up air lost through forced venting now creating positive pressure and when you open said doors, your indoor air blows OUTSIDE. It's more common on businesses with lots of foot traffic going In and out of doors or places that might be super dusty and you want to prevent dust intrusion. My house has a duct at rhs return for this purpose (sealed off because I need a filter for it) but I have to manually adjust the damper. I don't have pressure issues nor am I going in and out a lot so I keep it damped and sealed for now. I like that one was automated. More effective. 2. It's a conditioned space with the spray foam.

Hate to say it but that is the exact type of work I have gone behind for the past decade and a half. The biggest reason why is unfortunately not one person who installs the system can speak or read English. So the bad jobs can't be corrected because you can't instruct the installers. And with new construction houses, the inspectors have no idea what they are looking at and if they do know anything and point it out, they're taken care of in some way or the other. That's why I see work that has passed inspection all the time that was against code 20 years ago when I installed units. What's even more sad is the guy that does a good job and cares is told he takes to long even though one job gets no call backs and the other is an every week call until the customer gets sick of seeing that company come there every week doesn't matter for some reason. And 1 more thing. The bigger the company is, the worse the quality of work. That's why you see all the flex ducts all over like spaghetti.

Isn't this a function of our sh*tted up immigration policy?
@ethanpoole3443
@ethanpoole3443 5 жыл бұрын
hg2 Speaking as someone who spent much of his life growing up in Florida (before moving to SC) and has had a lot of first hand experiences with migrant workers, that really is not a fair comment even though I realize anti-immigrant comments are very much in vogue these days. Truthfully, they are some of the most hard-working people you will ever come across (that said, this is a generalization and there can be lazy individuals but they don’t last long) - they will happily work on a hot roof all day on a 110°F summer day in 90% humidity in full sun without complaint and get the job done. The problem is really one of proper training - if you grabbed a kid straight out of high school and dumped them in the HVAC field and never taught them anything useful other than showing them a few photos of past shoddy jobs and instruct them to “duplicate this”, how great a job would that inexperienced American high school graduate do? Probably no better because, as with most trades, there is a heck of a lot to learn and you need a very good teacher to learn to do the job right and it takes years to master (and, yet, many are day laborers and can be working totally different jobs from one day to the next as they are often treated like a commodity). Now add in the fact that their employers are only interested in profit and winning low-bid contracts, so a worker who tries to educate themselves to do a better job is often verbally berated and humiliated because they took an extra hour longer and/or used more, or more expensive, materials than had they done things the “way they were told”. This focus on profit over performance extends well beyond migrant workers and trades - the disabled husband of a friend of mine works as a bagger at a local grocery store and is verbally berated by the manager every time he has the audacity to double bag an especially heavy bag without the customer specifically requesting the extra bag as the manager only cares about the cost of the extra bag and considers it the customer’s own fault if an overloaded bag fails when they try to load/unload their car even though the store does the bagging. Although many may focus on the seeming language barrier, at a minimum whomever is in charge of hiring and scheduling the migrant workers will be bilingual (oftentimes so are some of the migrants) and can competently communicate with them, so it isn’t that nobody can talk to them to train them but rather that they (the boss) could care less about training to begin with because quality is not what those companies really care about, they just want the winning low-bid contract and that money in their bank account and then they are gone...if they get a bad name in the industry then they simply dissolve their company and reincorporate under a new name within a matter of weeks (at most). In many respects we can thank Walmart and Company, as well as one another (as customers), for this race to the very bottom in search of ringing profit out of the lowest price bid regardless of the consequences such has on quality - and immigrants had nothing to do with that, that is entirely on all of us and the fouled up priorities and greed of our corporations where money and profit are all that matters and conscience holds no sway! Cheap labor sources merely facilitated their ability to extract profit in this race to the bottom.

Nice vid like your attention to detail I’m a fridgy in Australia I’m curious are most of the units in the us that style many of the units you seem to have look quite conventional and not particularly modern. We have been dumping units like that just older versions of course for newer twin fan units with variable capacity compressors and in the mid to higher end of the market here you almost never see txv’s much any more there all going to electronic valves and variable speed fans even on non inverter units. Just curious what’s the market difference I would say mostly here energy efficiency is the main design issue followed by noise.

Aussie Friend, with all due respect, here is what Australia has done to its electricity market. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIqriWB_l5iEa7M This might be why Australia have/needs more complicated and expensive AC equipment. (High maintenance too?) Here in America, our busy-body bureaucrats are doing a great job of screwing up EVERY aspect of HVAC with their quack science chemistry (the ozone scam) and "efficiency" bright ideas. Hats off to Ted, who stockpiled R22 when the EPA jihadists declared war on it. Here's more on the "ozone hole" cr*p: Does the fact that there is 6 months of darkness at the south pole contribute to lack of ozone there? Why doesn't Clorox, pool chlorine, or chlorine from seawater (NaCl "salt water) deplete ozone? Why do CFC's only deplete ozone at the south pole? Why are CFCs the only source of high-atmosphere chlorine? Being heavier than air, how do CFCs reach the stratosphere, which starts 6 miles up? Being heavier than air, what happens to CFCs when released into the atmosphere? If the ozone hole was "discovered" in the late 70s with satellite imagery, how do we know it wasn't there all along? Dependability. These units last 20 years. Trane uses the electronic txv in the higher end units and we have to replace them all the time. I won't install one anymore. They are horrible. The energy saving is so tiny you'll throw all your savings away in the first txv replacement. Inverter compressors aren't as reliable as 2 stage compressor. Once again the energy savings is so tiny the extra repairs will destroy your savings. It's much better to look at the overall picture. Also units with inverter compressors units are $2000 higher for a 3 ton compared to a 2 stage.

Do you have a rooftop condensing unit, or is it ground level? Rooftop units may require a crane. Depending on where all of your equipment is located, the labor may increase. Also if they gave you a breakdown of your quote they may have standard options that are making the cost go up. The other main thing is the seer or efficiency rating. You pay for what you get, and then again sometimes they're just trying to over charge you.

South Fl condos are are expensive to do. labor is horrendous usually can’t park near the condo can only use the freight elevator and can only work certain hours and most require higher liability insurance. Usually the materials are about 30% of the job if it’s priced right. so if they are hourly employees doing the install and not subs. If it’s a new high end system with ductwork 16000to 18000 sounds about right. I was in south dade Broward and south palm beach county for 15 years. Way to many people and cars for me. When the youngest graduated high school we moved further north. Make sure they pull a permit and get the ok from the condo commandos before they show up.
