I ordered last year's XPS 17 because it got way cheaper and I don't really need the 10 - 20% performance increase of the new generation of CPUs. however, the vapor chamber is really important to me. I don't want my laptop to get loud and hot when I'm sitting in class working on a CAD software.

Awesome review! I've used a Dell at work for decades, but have never owned one. I just bought the XPS 15 (FHD, 16; 512) after watching a few reviews, including yours and I have to say, I'm impressed. Everything you said is correct. The footprint is unbelievable. I don't feel like I'm carrying a 15 inch even at 4.2 pounds, (the MacBook is 4.8). I thought I would regret returning my MacBook Pro 16, but Best Buy had a sale on the XPS for $1100 less than the MacBook Pro 16. So far so good. Thank you!

DO NOT BUY A DELL. I ordered this laptop after watching this video, and holy crap it was the WORST mistake I’ve ever made. First one I got, it had severe backlight bleeding, speakers didn’t work properly, and it overheated just by being turned on that it almost burned to touch it. I returned it. Thought maybe I just got a lemon, so I reordered. Next one had bluetooth and wifi issues. Dell sent two different technicians to fix it, but the second time somehow rendered the laptop completely useless. Had to argue with Dell to even take ANY responsibility, then offered to send different individuals pieces one at a time to fix the laptop. So send one piece, doesn’t work? Well lets try a different piece. They even admitted it could take WEEKS for it to work. Had to FIGHT to get a supervisor to talk to, and they finally agreed to send a replacement instead, but that it would arrive in NOVEMBER. Then they hung up on me, couldn’t get back into contact with original person, so I relayed this to a new agent, agent called basically called me a liar on anyone agreeing to do a replacement and said all they could do was piecemeal. Had to fight for another manager and another replacement, heard 3 different ETAs on a replacement then they stopped replying. Had to file a complaint with the BBB to get one of them to call me back. They finally did and I had to fight to get a replacement even relatively soon. They finally send one and the replacement has severe backlight bleeding, the trackpad popping out, and speakers not working. Had to send an e-mail to the actual EXECUTIVES, to get a call back about the replacement. All they offer is another replacement that they can’t guarantee when it will arrive or that it will not be faulty. They refused a refund due to it having been purchased at a retailer and laptop “not being in my name” even though they had already previously transferred it to me name and acknowledged that. It was already completely outside of Best Buy’s return policy because I was dealing with Dell and their technician who were supposed to fix a very minor issue. Dell refused to take responsibility, but Best Buy’s manager was kind enough to allow me to exchange it for a different laptop even though it was completely outside of their policy. He even told me that he’s not surprised because Dell has the worst customer service out of all companies that he’s heard about and it’s actually Dell’s responsibility, but that they’d never take responsibility. Please for the love of god DO NOT buy a Dell. Just look up the horror stories online and look at all the reviews posted on these laptops being done by “insiders” or verified people, but not people who purchased on their own other than ones that are pretty much hidden. Perhaps, they recognized his name and gave him a good one, but that was the worst experience of my whole life. Never have I had a company call me a liar and refuse to take ownership of their piss poor quality control.

@@createyourself13 Tried the MBP 14, but didn't like the bulk/weight/expense. The miniLED screen was amazing, though. I'm now using an iPad Pro 12.9" M1 + magic keyboard setup as a laptop replacement. It's working a lot better than I expected. I'll probably stick with this until we see what the 2022 MacBook Air has to offer.

I have the XPS 9710 with the base i5 processor and Intel UHD graphics. It is faster than the older 10th gen i7 with six cores. No complaints about performance, though I do not game or edit videos. I expect photo editing not to be an issue.

It’s a shame that the thermal problems are that bad. The performance issues basically make the laptop a pass for most people, especially creators. Maybe next year they’ll pull a vapor chamber in the updated XPS 15.

So these screens are typically manufactured by one company, like LG or Samsung, and they come in specific sizes. I believe Linus Tech Tips did a really good video when talking about why TV's used to come in 40 inch but now often come in 52 or something like that. So they make giant sheets of glass, which can be cut evenly into multiple large screens and multiple smaller screens without too much waste. Basically 17" may not be an efficient off cut when producing that size, whereas 15" is.

Little late but a quick answer to your question would be connecting an ultra wide such as a 34” lg that has power delivery via the same usbc port used to provide video output from the computer to the monitor. This is a single cable solution.

I have a DELL XPS 15 9570 from 2019. Its almost the same design as the new one. My laptop has the same head issue as the new one. Its so sad to see that they didn’t fix that. I wouldn’t recommend you an XPS15 because there is really no stable fix or trick to handle the heat problem. Even new cooling past didn’t help a lot :/

Check out the ROG M16. It is seriously impressive. Pretty much the same size as the XPS 15 but better specs. I believe it is a tad bit thicker than the XPS, but it is lighter. Battery life seems to be pretty good too.

My 9510 can play gta with egpu at fps 140. The cpu did not get hot. Maxed at 74c. Only if i do a cpu stress test does it max out.

I was ambivalent about Thunderbolt until I got my HP Spectre x360 14 which has two Thundebolt 4 ports, now I'm totally sold on it. I plug one cable from the laptop to my Thunderbolt 4 OWC dock and presto, complete home office. Thunderbolt is basically a requirement on laptops for me now.

In regards to the thermal throttling: yes, the CPU is thermally limited. But in your examples it's still running above base clock. 8 cores running at ~2.8 GHz while being quiet is more than adequate in my book. My workload usually includes screensharing an IDE (VS Code or IntelliJ) which means I have a light workload constantly on, but then spikes while compiling/runnng something. I'll probably configure the CPU with an even lower TDP, to get better batter life on light loads and less heat/noise.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme (up to 3080), HP ZBook Studio (up to 3080), and MSI Creator Z16 (up to 3060). These three 15" laptops all have that beautiful vapor chamber cooling. I've personally bought the MSI Z16, it has a nicer keyboard, screen, ports than the XPS 15, and has longer battery life too thanks to QHD screen.

Great review. Quick question: how is the light bleeding on the screen. I had to return two of the 9500s with the FHD+ display last year because I found the display mediocre -> when it comes to consistent brigtness to the corners. Both showed an obvious vignette. So what's your opinion. While everybody is usualy lauding the screen, I found those unusable for photo editing. Is everybody just acepting the fact that the screen is bad for any serious creative work or did I just get two bad units in a row ;-) cheers, Michael

Hey, great review. Have you found the colors to be overly saturated on the desktop/ premiere use? Seems to be a repeat issue from the last few generations. Dell PremierColor seems to have zero effect when set to sRGB mode. Lightroom works fine but apps like Premiere are not color managed..

Fair enough. Still love my 9500. I am a resolution guy, and I simply can't pass up on that UHD+ screen, despite its qc issues (trackpad & hinge). The 9500 comes with Touch, which, like you, I never use. Hate, hate, hate, a dirty screen! Ewww! Thermals, too, don't bug me. I game for hours on this thing without a hiccup (Overwatch & AoE 2).

the cpu with Xe are bigger/different design. 1185G7 would have been perfect on the 15" model with oled. the 11400h does have Xe, but only 32 execution units instead of 96 EUs in the Core i7-1185G7

But, now and the i like it to have some little games for outside gaming, since i have a Full Desktop rtx2070S etc etc etc at home for Heavy Gaming. So i tested with Civ 6 and Frostpunk, and League of Legends and all of them Run perfeclty, the first 2 more than 90 FPS in ULTRA all the time. The porpuse ia not to be a gaming machine but that also can Run a few games when i am outside, and on my experience works perfeclty !!

I got the same specs as you on my 9510 and I'm very happy with it. Even the touchpad is good now (had the 9500 before and returned it twice because of the touchpad). Only concern I got is the lag with mouse and keyboard over bluetooth sometimes. Does anyone have the same issue or anybody knows a solution? Dell support tried to help, but the issue is still there.

Thermal management is a FAIL. Purchased this in dec 2021. out of the box overheating. To the point I could not actually put it on my lap or hold it! In addition to random shutdowns, black screens that are unrecoverable and very long (like 8 hours) battery charge times. Flash forward 12 weeks and they are replacing it...but its been a journey through the underworld to make that happen. even with "premium plus" support. if it werent for needed a touch screen, id be off looking somewhere else

Today only I got Dell XPS 9510 (2021 edition, i9 32gb UHD+) and Man! the same issues. 1. Trackpad seems hard to click/press on top but loose at bottom 2. Fan making high pitch whistle noise 3. Also when lifting the laptop from one side in hand, its doing left click I agree its lovely laptop but all these issues have been existing in previous year models and now I am wondering whats trhe point for asking replacement when I know the new one I am gonna get will have same issues. Its not a faulty piece, its just design flaw which can't be fixed. Anyway I will send it back and ask for refund.

The 13" MBP with M1 chip is pretty sweet, but it has almost no ports, a much smaller screen (in a footprint not much smaller than the 15" Dell), and zero upgrade options. Maybe the new 16" MBP whenever it gets released, but that isn't yet on the radar and will probably be even more expensive than the Dell XPS 15.

I would want to connect directly to a Dell U3421WE ultra wide via USB-C. That is a USB Type-C (Alternate Mode with DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.1 Upstream, Power delivery up to 90W9). Weill the thunderbolt 4 plug into that without an issue and make the monitors hub usable? I have read some issues about the XPS 13 thunderbolt 4 not working with some hubs.

I almost ordered the 9510 yesterday, then saw this video and hit pause. I have since seen other reviewers who haven't had a major issue with the thermal handling though. The extra power and screen real estate of the 9710 is appealing, but I think it is about 1/2 pound heavier. Would to love to hear your thoughts once you get some time with yours.

@@HelloWorld-zg3gs Bit of both, I have wifi 6 in the house and the laptop will get a good signal throughut the house, the killer control panel tries to be clever with QoS, just get rid of it. Not have many issues with this dropping connection :) Dell really do need to move to the intel chips and just be done with Killer :(

@The Everyday Dad I just received mine in the mail. When I hold it by the hinge when closed, the laptop swings open about an inch and does not close all the way. Have you experienced this at all with your model? I contacted Dell and provided them with pictures, but they say that it's working as intended.
