I worked at Tesla starting in July of 2017 as an Operations Analyst out of the Bethlehem, PA distribution center facility and left as a Program Manager based out of Austin, TX as of September 2021. I spent most of my time in the distribution and supply chain organizations.
Before Tesla, I was a Director of Business Intelligence and Pricing at the largest Pet Food & Supply distributor in the US, Phillips Pet Food & Supplies based out of Easton, PA. My wife and I also owned a small business in Bethlehem, PA between 2016 and 2019.
I have been a shareholder of Tesla since 2012 and currently own Tesla stock.
My thoughts are my own and are not representative of everyone who currently works, or has worked at Tesla.

I was in a meeting with Patti in 2018 or so when she ripped Tesla's automotive manufacturing as completely sub-par to what GM and the other American OEMs were doing. Amazing how that tide has turned!

Well it was sub par. He basically said I'm going to do this. And he did it. He did it at such a fast pace we hit humanistic limits of capabilities. Look at how old major auto manufacturers are. It took them a very long time to get to where they stand today. They walked, then ran. Elon hopped on a rocket. Minor details can be worked out. The end result is what matters. The fact we're using the technology was the goal, for humanity.

43 years ago I worked in warehouse where we used an electric forklift truck. That was in use from 8am to 5pm someday's. We put it on charge overnight. I can never remember it running out of juice during the day. That was lifting pallets with roughly 1000Kg on or 1 ton. We were moving sugar or a product called crumb which was one of the key ingredients in Kit-Kats - hence we could not use the diesel or liquid gas truck. Electric for powering vehicles is not that new. Plus many of the first cars were electric.

As a California over many years I've seen,, my efficiency increase while my power usage decreases, but my utility bill continues to increase. All the savings of LEDs went right into the pockets of the utility companies. I think state law allows the utilities to increase 8% a year. What I'd like to see is utilities locked in to only being allowed a rate increase equal to going green and growing output, (solar, wind, storage (battery, etc). I doubt we're ever likely to see that in California where 'Regulatory Capture has long been the practice. My goal? To buy a house, install enough solar and PowerWalls so that I can completely disconnect from these loathsome parasitic utilities. I won't even care if it costs me significantly more money.

You might want to contemplate what your electricity bill might have been had we installed more expensive nuclear and fossil fuel generation. The wind/solar/efficiency advantage to you might well be a slower rising electricity rate.

PG&E should do as much as possible to support home generation, arbitrage, and storage, reducing future loads on the grid. My favorite energy generation is the floating solar cells in Portugal that pump water back up to the reservoir. This is a model that should be maximized in every hydroelectric generation facility.

One interesting aspect about solar irradiance: The amount of solar power incident on earth in daytime (1kW/m²) is pretty much at the limit of what humans can survive without protection (like shade). If it were 2x as much we'd have real problem to even stay outside. So I think we are kind of lucky to have the max amount of solar that is survivable.

Solar panel efficiency is growing slowly and steadily but we actually don't need to become much better at efficiency. Just improvement on production cost will be sufficient. Even if we stopped all innovation and prices/cost stayed the same it would still make sense to go with solar, we are low enough already - it's the cheapest form of energy generation in many places on earth.

Think about it: no moving parts, no fuel, works at least 20-30 years. Just put up the panels on a fixed frame, connect with inverters and buffer with a Li-ion battery (also without moving parts). Scale by adding more of the same. Just copy+paste.
