Excellent review mate! I found some used Machado 2+1 and was curious how they match up with some of the other 2+1 (MR and Merrick) and your review was exactly what I was looking for. I'm actually gonna pick up the Machado 2+1 when I really wanted to MR. Thanks again. 🤙

Have both the machado keel and quad set which I ride in my seaside in different conditions. I love the loose retro feel on smaller days with the twin keels. They’ve had great hold when I’ve used them; which has primarily been in the 1-2ft range, they’re super fast perfect for lots of speed floats and sweeping carves I’m 83kg, 6ft and ride a 5,5 seaside. Intermediate level

Nice :-) Those fins would both be excellent in a 5'5" I have to ride a bit more volume for my weight, ability and local waves so found I need the split keel for grip with the 41 Litres.. Machado is making some fantastic fins and boards though for sure. Cheers for getting in touch :-)

Hey Rob I just picked up the Machado quad set for the seaside and I think you mentioned in your seaside review that you could ride those as a twin keel would you say it's worth it to buy the Machado keel fins in addition to those?
@lawson45uk5 жыл бұрын
Roger Webster hey mate. Yeah I haven't ridden it as a keel myself but Noel Salas said it certainly rode really well in the smaller waves as a twin. Guess it's not necessary but at the same time if you wanted the feel of something more like a go fish at the cost of a set of fins rather than a completely different board it would definitely be a fun thing to try. I think it's pretty cool to have a board that you can change the characteristics of by changing the fins. Many people are looking for a fish that they can ride as a quad and a keel and a 2+1 so you kind of get 3 boards in one. Persobally I have a keel fish with the serial keeler and the fins are positioned in the keel fin spot further back but putting keels in the seaside will give you a pretty similar feel to be fair. Depending on how much you weight the modern keel could also be a good option. You might find something second hand or on special that you can buy and try 👍

hey, late to the party, but maybe itll help someone else. I ride it with machado twin keel, its insane. I love it, maybe even more than as a quad if the conditions are right. the quad set is better when it gets a little bit hollower for sure. but if the waves are fat, its pure fun. makes the board even more versatile on the lower range

The machado twin seem interesting , hope youll get those dvs quad keel to have your input. I tried modern keel on a board they had too much hold for me. The fcs1 fk2 is the only twin keel i enjoyed atm. Good video , yew 🤙

Youdig surf hey mate. Yeah I did reply on the DVS comment. Had some myself but not enough hold for me. Guess that shows how different personal preferences are on fins and how much things change as you are into different board volumes. My local shaper recommends the DVS with all his fish and everyone I know that has them loves them. I always struggle with anything that doesn't have much depth myself. Personally prefer that split keel. Also lots of guys with twinnies just ride twins in keel fish which to me seems way to small but again they're riding smaller thinner boards so the board grips more to start with. They all go well on the smaller ones too so yeah so personal on fins aye. Hope I don't street people wrong recommending too much fin for a lot of people based on what I like myself.

@@lawson45uk i didnt had notification of your answer, yes it's felt like you mentionned on one of my board but i dont feel it's this way yet with the pj, on the other board i solved the issue by adding a vs knubster didnt felt any slide after that's et voila ! It's board related and based on which foot you put pressure too i think, can be quite complicated yep, i sink the back of my hypto like which add too much drag therefore i can only use medium inner foiled fin or large flat foil like am to counter the drag delay at take off, weird isnt ?! 😅🤙
@lawson45uk5 жыл бұрын
Youdig surf lol no worries mate. Yeah knubs can be pretty handy aye. Almost a shame I didn't add a 5th box to the Beanbag that was similar I was like sweet split keel easy job done they work in everything else then I was kinda like hmm that could do with a wee stabiliser 🙉 lol though to be fair it's great now with the 2+2 so I'm pretty happy. Yeah like Yoh say so different with what board your riding what volume it is compared to your weight and then when if your style is more front or back footed and also the waves push or lack of. Most of it here is creating drive in a weak wave weak waves mean over volume boards and when the waves finally pick up a bit then those oversized boards with flat rockets want to slide out or go a bit too fast. What size hypto do you ride.

Hi, is the MR a good twin set without the trailer or is it made to be surfed exclusively with the center fin?
@lawson45uk2 жыл бұрын
Hi mare. Honestly it’s got as much to do with your board size abs volume and your weight and ability. No reason at all the fins won’t work as just twin fins but it’s more likely to work for a smaller rider on a smaller board. Definitely worth a try MR does the 78 twin that was a little more in line with what was on his more retro model dedicated twins. The chippa Wilson Neal purchase Junior is also a really good high area upright twin and trailer that would work as just a twin. It’s all about matching a surface area and fin shape to your needs for tour boards, weight and ability. Hope that helps.

I have probably watched this video 3 times until this day but this time I have a serious question. I’m in the price to buy a nice mid length (pukas La Cote ) that have fcs + US box . The dealer suggest me to ride it as a twin fin but I’m not sure if I should buy a pure twin fin set or a twin fin +trailer(I can find a converter to put the trailer on the US box) or if it would be better to have the regular 6” center fin + side bites . I know that you have pretty good idea on mid lengths and find so maybe you are the best person to help me 🙏 My weight is 88kg and I want to ride it in weak to medium hips to chest high waves here in the Mediterranean Sea . Any help would be amazing

Hey buddy. Nice.. You dont see much on the La Cote but looks like a great board form the review on the Boardshop UK channel. Really nicely balanced looking rocker and foil. Your one will be 4 fcs fins? and a slider/single fin/US fin box think they all mean the same thing. So you can try all sorts of fin set ups with this which one will work well will have a bit to do with the board and a bit to do with fin positions. I usually like quads myself but also like singles and have just bought a Machado Sunday so also experimenting with twin keels and twin and trailers in a mid..I could write pages and pages of stuff on this but it's so dependant on board size, fin placement and personal preference your probably gonna want to just give it a go and see what works. Have a look at my review of the Red and Blue midlength boards and also the Firewire Sunday might be some helpful stuff in there but if you want to go twin and trailer which will probably feel a little more balanced than pure twin you probably want to find the last trailer that's made for the fin box futuresfins.com/products/lost-3-625 True Ames also have something similar these have an overhang that should allow them to be placed about where a normal trailer would be ( around 100mm from the end of the tail to the back of the fin) pair this up with a nice set of twins for your twin and trailer. I'm trying the EN with mine but they are big fins. The AMT would be much looser. If you have a look on a board like the Sunday you will see the front fin boxes are positioned closer to the tail as they are positioned with a twin fin set up in mind. The La Cote looks like it's probably been designed to work ok as a few different options as I did on my Red Mid. Probably be a little slippery as a pure twin looking how far up the board the fins are but you might like that for smaller waves. I like twins further back, further in and less toe if it's a propper twin placement but it really depends on the board and might still work great... The board looks really cool and I suspect Quad, single and single with sides will be 3 of the most likely set ups to work well with the fin positions I see on the video.... BEST WAY TO BE SURE would be to email Pukas and ask them which fin set ups the board was designed for.. I'm not sure if they actually do a twin fin version but the shaper would know what he designed it as and what feedback they are getting from riders... I can only make assumptions from looking and not being able to measure fin box position but I know for example the CI Min was designed as a single or single with sides. The Sunday looks like it was designed to be a pure single or pure twin. The Lost Smooth Operator looks like Single, Single with Sides, Quad would be good and also twin and twin with trailer would be ok to experiment with but fin boxes not optimally positioned for. Looking at the La Cote on the video it looks more like the smooth operator intent to me. See if any of this lot helps arm you with more info there is no strict right and wrong but may well be reasons for something to not feel right that's really more down to fin position than anything else. Cheers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJnPn2Cfd6h1qa8&t= kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5fZiKyYp52Kesk kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqK1ZquMiJKnmMU

This is the only video I have seen on the La Cote so assuming that's the fin box configuration your talking about?? kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpjXiWtsgd5mhdU I know for like the Lost smooth operator our local lost shaper will do it with fin box positions optimised for something like the options below Depending on what you ask for. 1. Single or single with side bites. 2 Single or Quads ( This can be ok but not optimal for twins or side bites too depending on board length and fin placement) 4. Single or Twin / twin with Trailer 5. Standard 5 fin (this can be ok but not necessarily optimal for twins and twins with trailer too) It's like the lots Cali Twin that rides different to most other twin and trailer boards because the fins are exactly where MR wanted them for twin and trailer not where thrusters should be which is ok but not ideal. Same as putting twin fins in a quad box firewire seaside is ok but not ideal :-) lol Hope all that makes some sense. moral of the story check with the shapers intent ideally ;-)

This one will give you an idea of the difference between about where I would personally place a pure twin vs single and side bites too just for some visual reference. Hope this isn't all just making you more confused. There will always be trade offs with many elements of surfboard shape design and fin placement. kzbin.info/www/bejne/earYZJeVq994rbc

@@lawson45uk it’s not a quad set up . It’s 2 FCSII plugs with a center US box , I assume that the dealer made the order from pukas and he had the Greek type of waves in his mind …but I’m not sure about all this . Most of the La cote boards that are currently in stock on pukas shop are thruster only that’s why I’m thinking to buy MR twin as a first pair (for small waves ) and then pair it with a stabilizer for when the waves are better . I see more that center fin and side bites set up on longboard style surfing that’s why my mind are going straight to the twin - trhruster like set up 😅. This time I want a board to go out most of the days and forget about anything just have fun (easily)…the set up that I will choose must help that . If this board works as a single fin also it must be fun for the small days I assume . Thanks for all the videos ..I will watch them carefully 🙏
@lawson45uk2 жыл бұрын
Ah ok so again I think you would want to either check with the shaper and see what they intended on that board or at least find out how far up the board from the tail the 2 FCS2 plugs are. If they are well forward they may well be intended to be single and side bites. if they are a way back they will be intended as twins. My torque Chopper and the CI Mid at around the 6'10" to 7'0" mark have the back of the fin box 310mm from the tail and that's intended as a single plus side bites. The Firewire Sunday has the back of the fin box 270mm from the tail and that's intended as a twin fin so will give you an idea of how different the fin placement would generally be between the two intended set ups. As I say they would both work but might not be optimal or what the shaper intended. The Keels and twins do go back a little further behind the fin box too than standard fins so that would help out a little. Yeah you would see the single and sides on Longboards at the more performance end or mid length boards that are longer lengths generally. Ironically I would say in a longboard single fin is better in really small waves and on the Sunday and mids it's actually often harder to generate speed on a single fin in smaller waves. You do get less drag but also harder to pump for speed. Singles you have to more take what the wave gives you when it's small. Let me know how you get on. Really like the board so hopefully it works well for you. I see they do another model called the Lady Twin that's designed as a dedicated twin too. You can see that's designed to be a twin fin kzbin.info/www/bejne/noPGi6l6lNCDbM0
