Exciting news in women's healthcare is that a new non-hormonal drug named Veozah was FDA approved in May to treat vasomotor symptoms (also known as hot flashes and night sweats) for menopausal women. While this is no doubt an exciting development, I will be discussing who this might be appropriate for, and why it is not nearly as beneficial as estradiol for patients who are candidates for hormone replacement.

I'm a breast cancer patient so estrogen therapy is out of the question. Effexor is minimally helpful and, as you say, the side effects are almost not worth it (eg, brain zaps that make me crazy). Meanwhile, the hot flashes and night sweats have altered my life and my psyche drastically. This is something I'm battling 24/7. The hot flashes can all but debilitate me, making it hard to function outside the home. And the night sweats leave me drenched. Three to four times a night, I have to change pajamas and bed sheets. That's how severe they get. I am going to do some research then discuss Veozah with my oncologist. Thanks for the info!

I’m a 2x breast cancer survivor. Last onset was 16yrs ago. After giving birth to my last child. She was a yr an a half…Anyway, Post menopause is still kicking my butt! Seems like every year it worsens…I wish I could take BHRT but gyn and oncologist are afraid to prescribe it, which makes me nervous as well. I was just prescribed Veozah for the hot flashes and night sweats. Have you tried it yet? What has helped me with night sweats, some nights more than others, is sleeping with only underwear 🤷🏼‍♀️ lol, lightest bed sheets, and having the room temp. more cold than cool….I’m grateful that my poor husband still tolerates me lol.

This drug I hear is hormone free, I am sceptical about hormones i was all set to do hrt because I had no period or period like discharge for a year and I read up on the hrt and I also saw another side effect is blindness and I didn't like that idea at all so I am riding the dragon, but the hot flashes are wearing me out.

Thank you, Doctor for taking your time to give us the latest information - Especially in this case of a newly approved medication. We all should have unbiased information and sadly, many of us have not had physicians we necessarily trust. Have a great weekend!

You’re in too much estradiol then. Lower it. Talk to your doc

I was told that HRT is only short term so I've been using them for 5 years and apart from not being able to get the scripts filled because of limited supply and no idea of when it will be available, this Veoza I found has helped, but $60 a month isn't helping, it's crippling & there's no date of if/ when it will go on the PBS meaning it will cost $6.70 so unfortunately I can't afford to pay $60 it's helped a little bit not enough for $60, I'd want no more sweating at all day and night to continue to put lay the money. I'm 58

My concern is they are going to come out with pills for each of the symptoms hrt takes care of which will be pushed by anti hormone drs What’s the collective risk taking all of these Rx instead? Not to mention the cost of taking multiple symptom treating Rx

Totally agree. Why not just take bio identical hormones ?

I started taking hormones 6 years ago. Everything seemed to go well except for about a year ago when my hair started falling out. I stopped the hormones for many months now, and my hair is pretty normal now. Still have hot flashes now and when I was on hormones. They were not as bad then, but not completely gone. Now they are out of control. I took a full month of EstroBlock supplement (over the counter), and it helped. I ran out and boom, they are back with a vengeance. I'm going to check into this new drug. Gosh! I hate to take pills.

Who should not take estrogen? Does short or long term use cause breast, cancer or not? I’ve been suffering for years.

Although skepticism is often warranted, I find the level of skepticism regard Veozah is too extreme in this video. How does one know that this drug will be only used in very limited situations without waiting for real world experience? What if it addresses vasomotor symptoms much better (on the whole) than estradiol? It may or may not, but we don't know that yet. Instead of pronouncing that it will be only used in very limited situations, I would have rather the author advised waiting for real life experience (for at least a year) before making such a pronouncement. Just my two cents from the peanut gallery . . .

agreed. too much of her own personal opinion in this. sooooo many women i know, including myself, have or have had estrogen positive breast cancer... a lot of women out there can't and should not be taking estrogen...theres a whole lot, too many of us out there in the world right now sadly.

@@kikothepiko878 I agree also! I had estrogen positive breast cancer 2 years ago and had to stop estrogen cold turkey. So along with dealing with cancer I had to deal with all the withdrawals symptoms from stopping HRT. And one out of seven women that are going to get breast cancer, with many of them being estrogen positive, there is a much larger population than the video implies.

My gyn retired. She recommended staying on estrogen and progesterone till I retire. My new gyn said she recommended weening me off estrogen. She also shredded my 25 year records from my previous doctor without telling me. I won’t be going back to her.

I have been taking this medication for about five months, and will have to stop because it is very expensive. However, it does work very well. The effect lasts about 10 hours and with continued use, the hot flashes lessen, but once you are off, they come back. Taking in the morning, you can get through your workday, if your symptoms are worse at night, you can take it at night, and you will sleep through without sweating.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and opinion on this new drug. When my gyn recently declared me “post menopausal” (I’m 56), she recommended Veozah for any remaining symptoms because her belief is that women shouldn’t continue hormones once “post”.

I like what I hear you say. I had breast cancer (estrogen receptor positive) and am 7 years in remission. However, I've had hot flashes and night sweats for this length of time, they have gotten less severe but I get them every 45 minutes. Needless to say, they have limited me from doing so many things. I would like to speak to someone about possibly getting Estradiol, my PCP is opposed to it, would you say I need to see a specialist (i.e. gynecologist/endocrinologist)?? Would really appreciate your input, thank you.

Interesting.. actually not all can take estrogen . I’ve been diagnosed with endometriosis so I had hysterectomy so surgical menopause I have terrible hot flashes . I tried added back estrogen and getting bad or same symptoms as the endometriosis pain and issues . So not sure if anyone knows about endometriosis.

I’ve been taking this medication for a few months and if you have one cup of coffee or two spread out, you will be fine. Best time to take depends on when your symptoms are worse, the effect lasts about 10 hours so you can either take it at night to be able to sleep through or During the day so that you can get through your work schedule, good luck
