Filmed by Daniel Graham
Here is the infamous second film source of Montréal 1977 that appeared online a few months ago, synced up to a multi-recording matrix done by Davide Capolongo, as well as a colour correction. This is the legendary concert where Waters was so fed up with the rowdy American crowds that he ended up spitting in the face of a fan who was climbing up the front of the stage.
Waters claims in interviews that this moment was during a "quiet bit". Chris Cockram - a roadie for the 1977 tour, working around the stage - claims that the spit did indeed happen during 'Money', and that the famous Wray Ellis account - who was not even near the stage after Animals - is simply untrue. The shot of Waters whistling at 4:13 clearly shows him facing upward. Judging by his upward stance and very pig-based dialog (a la, 1980-81), it is more than safe to assume - if not confirm - that the spit did NOT happen during Pigs, and that he was simply yelling at the inflatable. The clip of Waters at 14:08 during 'Money' shows him yelling angrily at somebody in the crowd, and giving them the middle finger. At 14:16, during the "quiet bit" to 'Money', Waters is seen lunging forward, in a spitting motion. This is very likely to be the historical moment captured on film. This will teach you; don't believe everything you see on the internet, unless there is footage of it.

If someone said to me 5 years ago the spit was filmed, I would have laughed. If someone said it was during Money of all songs, I would have laughed harder. But here it is, in all of its glory. No words can describe how important this 8mm is to Pink Floyd's history, it's simply breathtaking.

@ThePFRG
@ThePFRG 6 ай бұрын
@ElectricDogma Because he was yelling at the pig inflatable, which was deep in the crowd toward that part in Pigs. The pig was coming back to the stage by the time of him yelling. He literally says "come back pig". And don't tell me he says kid, there is no "kuh" sound anywhere in that last word. The shot of him whistling also shows him looking up, not down. The stage was high up. Sorry man but Wray's story is bullshit. Even SOMEONE THAT WAS WORKING on the 77 tour, WHO WAS THERE, said that Wray's lying through his teeth.

I was there. As much as I love Pink Floyd (the music closest to my heart) and Montreal (born and raised there), there was something deeply wrong with the crowd that day. People around me and all over seemed to be more into their drugs, firecrackers and attention-seeking hysteria than into the music. Felt kinda sad by the end actually, the band apparently having given up. The last blues number was sweet and melancholy though. Weird times.

Same with me. I was there, love Pink Floyd, and still live in Montreal. I think part of the problem was the venue- The Big O was not designed for concerts, a concrete bowl with poor sound, and this was the first big show there since the Olympics. My seats were bad, I was expecting more songs from Dark Side (they only did Money and Us and Them as encores), and I had no idea of the infamous spitting incident until many years later. But seeing as The Wall is my favorite album of all time, I'm glad I have a small connection to it.

I was there with two of my friends, in section 231, just under the VIP boxes. One of the reasons why the crowd was so loud, was that local radio stations were promoting this concert as an event not to be missed. This obviously attracted a crowd of curious people, who did not really know Pink Floyd and their music. Add to this the abuse of drugs and alcohol, and you have a crowd that no longer knows how to hold back.

There's always something wrong in Montreal. Remember the riots following the Metallica/GNR at the stadium? Or the exploited riots, or the Stanley Cup in 1986 and 1993? I was there at each of those events. The stadium isn't designed for show. The sound is awful.

I'll never forget seeing this concert live in Phoenix Arizona in 1977. They played it at the madhouse on McDowell where the Phoenix Suns used to play. The atmosphere was so intense with the music and the lights and the movies going on and the surround sound that I saw at least a dozen people have to be hauled out because they had taken something to enhance their experience!! For them I think that was a mistake and I stayed sober going into the concert because I wanted to remember it! When my girlfriend and I who later became my wife left that concert we didn't say a word all the way home cuz we were still in shock!!!! Still to this day nobody comes close to a Pink Floyd concert!! Seen them four times in three different decades and I've seen about 100 concerts with every major group you can think of and none of them rivaled A Pink Floyd concert!! Only Led Zeppelin AC DC and Metallica came close!!! Still holding out a very slim hope that Floyd had this filmed and there's a professional copy of that concert in 1977!! It was beyond mind boggling!!!

Incredible! Always love hearing these fan stories! I'm curious, because Phoenix has no audio and very very little photographs; do you have any recollections of Echoes being played after the Dark Side encore? There are some stories that they played this in either Phoenix or Portland. Echoes was planned for Oakland when the band got an extra 20 minutes by the stadium but the tapes for the outro were not working. They did Careful With That Axe instead. Let me know!

@@ThePFRG I recall that they played us and them and then they played money to close out the show! They extended money to about a 12-minute song and those were the two encore songs. By this time there was so much pot smoke in the air but I think they played Time between the two but they did not play Echoes. I really wish they had!! Again I think Time was in between us and them and money but like I said there was so much pot smoke in the air I think I was pretty high by the end of the concert LOL!!

It was pretty much only becase soeone who was there, Wray Ellis, says it was during Pigs in his KZbin videos, on websites etc. But his pictures show that while he was very close to the stage during Animals, about the same position as the filmer, he moved back a LOT before the encore. When the spit happened, Wray was a good hundred meters from the stage, he saw nothing.

I was 10 feet from Roger, right at the barricades, no one in front of us for the whole show. Listen to the recordings - the spit is CLEARLY during the outro to Pigs - Money is in 7/4 time and not a hint of that. I can't understand where this "during Money" idea came from.

@@bloomz1 but in Pigs he's clearly shouting at the Pig. 'Come back pig!' also 'just another 100 yards' that's like 90 meters. Now you're telling me this kid was all the way at the back of the stadium or Rogers depth perception is way out. He also makes no reference to it after the song while announcing the intermission. He does ask everyone to calm down in the encores though, almost like he's feeling a tad guilty. Also, we can see in the video he spits during Money.

Wow this brings flashbacks. The inflatables and animations, in person, were mesmerizing at the time; a shame the tech of the day was in no way up to the task of gathering and saving it, at least in a way that reveals what it was like. Everything was novel and overpowering to mid-1970s crowds. As far as filming goes, as a 17-yr-old super-8 film hobbyist myself back then, I hadn’t the balls or the funds to sneak my camera in to the Philly Spectrum shows (BOTH of them!). Hats off to this filmer. He burned through today’s equivalent of $250 - in film cartridges and processing - to capture this precious 16 mins of snippets.

Space Music. They were out there. Thanks to Richard Wright. You bought a guitar 🎸 to punish your Ma! Fun Fact: Even at the height of their fame and sellout shows the members of Pink Floyd could still walk the streets of any major city unrecognized because their shows emphasized the light show and music and not their faces. 😮😊 Thanks for uploading this rarity! 😊

Awesome that this audience footage of such a historical Floyd concert exists! Just wish the cameraman got more shots of David.

Holy sh*t man. I love it so much! The da..... sorry SPOILER WARNING The damn umbrellas at the end of Us and Them get me every time. They're perfect! Theres only one photo of this happening, and it was discovered after the film, so nobody had any idea that this happened, no attendee mentioned it... crazy. One can only guess if that was deliberate or an accident

I searched this thread for the first umbrella comment. That effect was solid. I know Us and Them was not always an encore, but holy shit! What a way to close the tour….then the blues set happen. 🤦‍♂️

I was there with two of my friends, in section 231, just under the VIP boxes. From my seat, I did not notice the spitting event. One of the reasons why the crowd was so loud was that local radio stations were promoting this concert as an event not to be missed. This obviously attracted a crowd of curious people, who did not really know Pink Floyd and their music. Add to this the abuse of drugs and alcohol, and you have a crowd that no longer knows how to hold back.

In addition to The Wall's trigger, it's incredible how the acidity and tension of the lyrics added to the dystopian atmosphere of the band's sound affects the entire environment. It is still a criticism today, often cynical, but very strong and makes us reflect on everyday relationships and the objectives behind everything.

A late friend and I took a "magic bus" ride from Plattsburg NY to Montreal to see this show. The bus was a glorified keg and smoke party, enhanced by other psychotropic materials. Something I remember is that some of the film that was shown in the backdrop, like the marching hammers, appeared later in the move called The Wall. Wow.

Stellar work here, gentlemen! This can only be described as nothing less than an immense labor of love, and you have my sincere gratitude. Brilliant synching and color corrections with what was originally just a silent hodgepodge of aging tape. I do have one question for the experts : Given the film limitations at the time (3.5 minute cartridges), these clips all seem to be mere seconds in length. None seem to be even a minute and certainly not the maximum length possible. Which, btw, makes this project even more impressive. I can't imagine our hero, who had the foresight to smuggle in and risk losing his gear, changed cartridges every so often, and not use the full length available. We're these snippets of longer segments? Is there a possibility that even more of this historical footage is waiting somewhere to be liberated to see the light of day? P.S. Absolutely love what you have given us! Thank you!!!

Thank you for the kind words. No, this is all that was filmed. The cartridges were 3½m in length, but it was rare that people actually held the button down for that long. Most people would typically get 10-20 second shots at once but some people (like Graham here) unfortunately don't know how to film anything properly. I'm grateful this exists but if it didn't have the spit, this would be another useless film.

@ThePFRG Ah yes, the ol 'had to hold the button' conundrum. It all makes perfect sense. Expressed in.. oops where was I. I very much doubt Graham had any notion at the time of his recording's future significance and scarcity. Somewhere, in an alternate universe, there is a full concert, multi angle, 8k master recording of an Animals tour. But the rub is everyone is REALLY gay. So that civilization is, sadly, doomed. Long live Floyd!!! EDIT: Except Floyd. They were straight.
