well, to be fair Cece and Schmidt did move out of the loft way before the series ended because of the same reason as Monica and Chandler did, to start a family. and we don't get to see whether nick and jess stay in the loft after they get married or move out. the only difference between friends and this would be that friends ended the show on a much emotional scene whereas new girl ended it on a happy joyful note. none of those endings were bad.
@HelenaSxhwartz4 жыл бұрын
Sonanki Ghosh well i‘d like to disagree. friends imply that the chapter of life where being with your friends is everything ends when they finish the show. that is nowhere near the narrative new girl constructs over the last season. they jump a few years and we see that nothing has changed, no one has stopped talking (except coach) - new girl ends with them saying goodbye to the loft but not each other. it doesn‘t end with us thinking they wont ever see each other again, because it is never part of the storyline. friends doesn‘t have that. that was my whole point.

i think it perfectly “fixed” the moonlighting problem-bc you stop watching a show if the only thing keeping you coming back over and over is the tension of will-they-wont-they once they finally do, but ALSO if your show runs for 7 seasons people will get RIGHTFULLY ANNOYED if they never do for reasons of “we dont want viewers to stop watching.” so the writers did the characters the respect of being like “realistically there is nothing keeping these characters from acting on their feelings right now,” but then ended the relationship amicably for the reasons in the video. yet the show STILL has the tension of when theyll get together, and u get to see their chemistry and their sweet friendship and growing relationship. so its not just like, eternal blue balls, but u get all the benefits from will-they-wont-they chemistry

Schmidt and Cece had my heart and allegiance from the beginning but I loved how authentic Nick and Jess' love was. It was always beautiful to see Nick do things for Jess just because but when he said in season 3 that he had loved her from the beginning, it made it so much more special. And I absolutely loved the fact that at no point did he pass judgement or resentment towards her or her relationships and vice versa. Even when in love they never moped or tried to actively sabotage each other's relationships. I was genuinely surprised as to how well this show wrote everyone's relationships.
@jeriekae4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Nick was really the first one to care for Jess, a total stranger at that time and one who just recently moved in. I love their friendship too. It was filled with so much love. And I always love how they still care so much for each other without being bitter. I love their dynamic.
@晶-c7i4 жыл бұрын
Ross and Rachel's dynamic on Friends was so infuriating, because they never actually became better people. The problems which broke their relationship up initially were still there when they got together in the end. They were terrible exes to each other, and always let their jealously and selfishness get in the way of each other's happiness with other people. Ross and Rachel should not have stayed friends after breaking up. Their "friendship" stopped them from pursuing healthy relationships with other people, and learning and growing from their mistakes. I love how New Girl showed what an actually healthy friendship between exes looks like.

i honestly think rachel improved as a person. she was ultimately happy for ross and emily when she wished him well at the wedding. Ross, however, didnt change at all. I know a lot of fans complain that Nick and Jess got together "too early" but... you can't elongate romantic tension for 3+ seasons! That would just be pointless writing, especially when the endgame is very obvious. If the writers were to drag it out, the show would've become frustrating to watch. I like that Nick and Jess begin to admit their interest in season 2.

Ironically they could’ve done it earlier but the writers said no. They told the two to not touch each other. I’m so happy they did wait to get them back together because it also became a lesson in the good of remaining friends and having a nice relationship with an ex that was originally a good friend. They learned to continuously have each other’s back and go through other relationships that emphasized their own issues and learn from them. Growth :)

In my youth I really loved the long burn, but now that I’m a couple of years into adulthood, I find the will they won’t they so tiring after a season or two. IMO they got together at a perfect time, they’re adults and it wouldn’t make sense to deny the attraction they felt for so long for no reason
@jupitersecIipse2 жыл бұрын
I don't get that critique either, really. I love slow burn, but not if it's unnaturally dragged out for multiple seasons. Then it just gets tiring and loses its intrigue. I loved when they got together, I understood their breakup, and I loved when they got together again in the end even more. They had so much chemistry throughout S1 and S2 (throughout the entire show, actually), it wouldn't have been great to drag it out just for the sake of a slower burn.

I think what Nick and Jess got right that Ross and Rachel got wrong is that they trust and love each other enough to let the other be their own person. When things come to a head and they break up, they genuinely want the other to be happy. They acknowledge each other’s growth. They call each other out on their flaws and make sure that they don’t miss out on their opportunities. Basically they’re best friends who look out for each other whether they’re in love or not.

I’m so glad that they didn’t treat Nick and Jess’s relationship like Ross and Rachel’s. Not only were R+R toxic, they were selfish, and constantly jealous, holding each other back. Nick and Jess did none of those things. Their breakup was even so much healthier than R+R’s as well. It feels so good that they allowed Nick and Jess to grow as people and figure out what they really wanted and got them back together.

I don’t know anything about friends but with Nick and Jess I absolutely loved when they broke up. (Still wanted them together lol) but it showed that love between two exes that were previously friends can still be there. The breakup allowed to keep a strong and supportive relationship. They knew they loved each other and proved it when they were together and through their breakup but ultimately went off to focus on themselves. I think it made them stronger as a couple. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think Nick after dealing with his own issues in the end the last thing he needed to get over was his fear of the relationship and he did so when talking to Schmidt. I get that there's an amount of growing up you have to do but geesh - we're never fully actualized. We're constantly growing and changing. And some people have difficult life experiences and hurdles that are hard to overcome - even with hard work. Non-perfect people deserve romantic love too. I guess I'm just biased cuz I'm the person the main characters date so they can find themselves and figure out they actually want to be with each other. Nick and Jess were at least able to continue to coexist with each other and be civil to each other's significant others, even if they didn't like them. Jess was even nice to Regan, who was with Nick at the time when she realized she still had feelings. Other shows like Friends and HIMYM made it seem like you could only have one or the other at a time. Nick and Jess' friendship is such a beautiful thing, because they put their friendship first and let it be the foundation for their romance. That's what always makes me cry when I watch the breakup episode - not that they broke up, but because they immediately supported each other as friends after that breakup. Honestly, I loved them together already in the first episode when Jess asks if Nick is going to kill her.. since he's a stranger she met online. I feel like their relationship is the most realistic one out of any series, it's a relationship building up through friendship. They care so deeply about each other and that's just so pure, they push each other to be their very best 🥺 Every relationship should build up like that I wish Jess would've had more time with Julian Morris role and I also did like her with Sam.. But Nick is just the one ❤️

I like the way they write New Girl. In any conversation, it doesn’t really end the way you predict it would be. I love how it is timely and their humor is really smart and with the correct timing. Also each character is consistently distinct and interesting, for instance, the reaction of Schmidt is completely different from the reaction of Winston, and that kind of writing is really great! I would like to watch a channel that analyses the writing of a certain tv show or series, please suggest if you know one. 🙂

FAVORITE ON SCREEN COUPLE EVER😍😍Best friends, best exes and always there for eachother🥰 Its not easy relationship..shows reality..and, though they love eachother, since the timings fucked it, when you have chemistry, timing is the bitch!! But, I loved the fact they grew after the breakup..and, when they got back together, were the perfect fit!! I love this show...not sugar coated..reality..life's messy but you grow through this ... that's what makes it perfect..I'm so glad I watched this show😍😍

This was so well done and satisfying! Also very helpful as a romance writer
@fraserposford1443 жыл бұрын
This video helped me better understand and accept Nick and Jess' relationship and also helped me better understand why Ted goes back to Robin at the end of How I Met Your Mother. That relationship is also an issue of timing (Robin even says in the show that a good relationship needs Chemistry and Time) and by the final episode, both of them have achieved what they wanted with their lives that got in the way of them being together initially and can now be happy together.

nick and jess’s wedding could have been done so much better: i think that the whole curse thing was a little funny at first but it was overdone and rushed and i think they should have done a callback. in season 4, when jess is dating ryan and her dad is getting married, all the gang goes to portland and jess is the best man. when she looses the rings and asks nick and coach the get them, there’s a scene where nick finally gets the rings and when she’s going to give them to jess her dad and the bride are slow dancing and nick says something like “one day we are going to find people to do that with” it would’ve been so adorable if at their wedding maybe the curse would’ve lost their rings or something and they were found slow dancing because the didn’t need to get married and they knew they wanted to spend the rest of their life’s together. idk it’s a concept
@Ashley-ro4xz3 жыл бұрын
Sooo true but the fact that Ashley didn’t stay with her dad defeats the purpose. Would been cool if she stayed and Jess and Nick did that. Cool attention to detail.
@Lunaperu3 жыл бұрын
@@Ashley-ro4xz yess i agree there was no purpose of her leaving jess’s dad
@cassierxse3 жыл бұрын
your idea would be really cute too, but i think the point of the cursed wedding was to bring up their fears and anxieties and then show them pushing past that- since that was their whole problem before. i honestly loved that because so many will-they-won't-they couples end with them getting back together, and it leaves you wondering "do they just make the same mistakes?"- but because of the cursed wedding and Russel coming back, etc, it made them face it all and push through it. "you wanna have the weirdest wedding of all time?" "to you? that's all i want, miller."

My god. If I could be so lucky to hook up with a friend then break up and become exes that care about each other to that level. I don’t think that’s realistic at all actually. But man does it make for a great story.

Honestly Cece and Schmidt’s relationship was the best in the series you can’t change my mind
@locazahra3 жыл бұрын
I didn't have an issue with them breaking up, but they broke up too soon and for such a stupid reason. We didn't get enough time to enjoy their relationship before it was over! And then it was just a waiting game until they got back together. Again, too long of a wait and not enough build-up.
@lisarm1003 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think because of it being the “central relationship” the writers overthought it and then wrote themselves in a corner.

Okay I gotta say something- the first time around, I wasn’t feeling their relationship. I didn’t hate it or anything, but *to me* it didn’t feel very fitting. Second time around I felt the opposite way. I think everything played out very well in the end and I’m so happy for it.

I don't comment too often on videos but this take nearly made me cry and also realize why I cherish this show so much. I could't really put my finger on why Jess and Nick were such an important couple to me in TV but you really managed to make me realize what it actually was. Thank you so much for the effort you put into your videos and help me and probably many others get behind common tropes and understanding more of the effort put into symbolism and growth in shows and movies.

Not the topic of the video but one thing I give props to Friends for is the diverse means of starting a family/ settling down. It was quite ahead of its time with Pheobe being a surrogate, Rachel having a child before marriage, and Monica adopting. New Girl made it so everyone was capable of having their own child and even wanting a child! It was also kinda annoying that everyone in New Girl was paired up cus in the real world not everyone finds a partner around the same time.
