About our pretty, little New Guinea Impatiens flowering plants at our Golf Course in Coto de Caza, SoCal (Zone 10). Also called Impatiens hawkeri and Sun Impatiens. We plant these every November as they bloom for Christmas all the way through Spring. Here are some facts about our plant, plant care, growing tips, propagation and a few other tidbits.

oh, thank you. lots of people tend to like this variety because they are more resilient than regular impatiens.

Mine r HUGE and have now gotten leggy. I need to know how to prune them and your the ONLY VIDEO that actually shows a full grown plants and how to prune them! I’ve watched many videos on how to peso called prune. Other videos are using newly bought plant and most are showing how to dead head! Which isn’t actually pruning. YOU GIVE GREAT INFO! Tyvm!!! I live in Florida and I have to water them a lot! I have one in full sun, in summer it struggles but doing ok. After temps die down they are absolutely beautiful. So many flowers can’t hardly see the leaves. I totally recommend these especially for beginners. Ty again! P.S. ….. you really need to prune yours to make them full again, yours to are leggy! They should be like a bush.

What happen in winter???

If temperatures drop below 45-50 degrees F, you need to bring them inside. If they freeze, they will probably die. In winter they typically go dormant, slow growth due to short days with limited sunshine. Keep providing water, but not too much or you may get root rot. Most impatiens are annual, and will die each year. BUT, New Guinea Impatiens can come back year-after-year if you keep them nice and healthy. Trim them back a little at the end of the summer cycle to prepare them for a relaxing winter. After temperatures rise above 50 degrees F, then you can move them outside again.
