I feel like this video is something a lot of DIYers need to see. The feeling is that as an amateur you're somehow ruining or devaluing the house as we learn on the go, but if you're concerned enough to worry about it (enough to watch someone put rebar in fence post footings!) then seeing how shoddy these "starter" houses are built, our over the top efforts sealing and protecting our little projects installing outdoor outlets and the like are probably actually reducing air gaps, straightening drywall, putting in blocking and insulation that actually fits the span and making our homes more protected than they came. Thanks for making this, I could listen to you talk about paying money and getting crap for it for a full hour.

Thank you, It amazed me at how crappy these houses were being built but they are BRAND NEW. Thanks for watching.

If they use window/door trim as baseboard…RUN! You might as well rent an apartment if you're looking for the “Landlord special” treatment. 😂

On those "half cripples"... since the jack stud goes all the way up to the header, those half cripples are only there to support the window ledge. If they had another cripple going up to the header on top of the ledge, that lower cripple should go all the way to the sill plate to carry the load but since they don't I think you can get away with what they've done. It's shoddy work regardless, though.

My dad built homes thru the 50s and 60s into the 70s. Then a building inspector. Retired to Florida into a anch condo. Just inside the front door the hall had four 12 inch tiles. By the time you got to the end 10 or 12 ft away it was three and half tiles. They used casing for base there also. Dad said that's Florida construction.

WOW! What a great job you did on this video! You really know your stuff. I just dropped in today watching you on your fence and front garden bed. I figured you're just a regular guy doing stuff around the house. *THEN* you talked your way through those NEW houses and tore them APART! PEOPLE NEED TO WATCH/FOLLOW! Thank you!!!

This is great. While they might not receive the news well nor that you were there before they moved in...you can tell them about things that they might want to think about.

Typically, at least in my area, the sub-contractors are also paid by the sq. ft., so the quicker they get in and out, the more they make. That builder is what you call a production builder. They are about anything but quality and homeowner satisfaction. I know this because I work for one. Never hire a production builder. If you can't afford to hire a quality builder, then you can't afford to build a new house. Most of the things you pointed out are done in our homes, but we are still using OSB sheathing.

How the hell do they not use plywood or osb for sheathing? I suppose that's why these new houses fall apart w a straight line wind.

Thank you very much. Looking at this makes me realize things I can fix on my own house when it is time to do some renovations. I need to find some closed cell spray foam for some things and will use it when I expose the studs on an exterior wall renovating a bathroom & laundry room. Is there any particular brand/type of spray foam you'd recommend? I have a tiny access attic in my hallway as well. No ladder for it. Really feel you on the disdain for that cardboard crap. How is that even allowed? Just googled that Bora-Care stuff and it is pricey. But probably worth it if it can keep termites out. Ugh, I would not want to buy the cheap houses from that builder. I've never been a big fan of tile. I despise grout. LOL. Every home I've ever lived in that had tile, the tiles were uneven. I like to have ceiling fans in every bedroom. At least the patio is nice. LOL. I've got vinyl siding on my house and they put some sort of J-trim around every door and window so there isn't much exposed edge on the side of the door casing. I like PVC baseboards. When I removed the old wood trim in my bathroom there was a gap under my tub with exposed wood. I covered it with pvc baseboard & caulked it up so no water will get behind it. It actually looks very nice. Since my walls are not even remotely square and I don't want to mess with finding angles, I'm going to use insider and outside corner plinth blocks for my baseboards. I was watching one of those programs where people want to buy houses and they were saying they wanted newly built ones because there won't be any problems. I had a good laugh at that one. I know for a fact some newly built homes are absolute garbage. My sister's house doesn't even have vent fans in the bathrooms. She didn't know there's supposed to be some way to vent the moisture out. That looks like some super thin sheet vinyl (the "roll out laminate"). We don't do the slab on grade where I live. We have sandy loam with clay deeper down. Most of the houses here are on blocks. I prefer closed cell over open cell. although mice can get into both-- but its harder for them to get into the closed cell. I've never lived in a brand new house. Only ever lived in older homes. This one was built in multiple parts. Not sure when earliest part was built-- 20s or 30s. First addition was done in 1947. Renovations done in the 70s. Again, thank you for this. It gives good insight into how houses are built.
