These two are the picture of health in comparison to your previous two rescues, both of which turned out spectacularly in your care.

Hi there - an Aussie pup question - we have a 2 month old standard Australian Shepherd. You mentioned that we should practice sitting on a table and bonding before going on walks and experiencing new surroundings. We live in a suburb and have a 30 x 147 ft fenced backyard. So far he's been playing and running around in our backyard, but we want to make sure he has more exercise as each month passes. Do you recommend to stay in the confines of our home/backyard or train him to walk around our neighborhood/park/nearby trail to exercise him? We over socialized our last pup and we're hoping to avoid the same mistake with this one. This is also our first Aussie and we want to make sure he is active physically and mentally.

Hi, MM, great question. The table is for impulse control and training your puppy to be still, stand, sit, be handled all over, etc and is great for tiny puppies, small breed puppies and puppies your pups age. Sit on the floor and bond with your puppy. Let your puppy explore you and teach him or her not to bite, pull on your clothes etc. Play on the floor with your puppy with an appropriate toy. Not sure what you mean by over socializing and what was the out come of that, but yes train at home, in your home, in your yard and let him meet people that regularly come to your home in a calm, quiet fashion. I fully leash train at home before going anywhere. Your pup can get plenty of exercise at home for the time being until trained and fully vaccinated.

@@dreamgaits thanks for the helpful advice! We have been playing on the floor with him and letting him explore hands/clothes, etc. We use an elevated dog bed for the "place" command and managing impulse control. For over socializing, I meant that our doodle met a lot of strangers on walks as a puppy and he grew up with the expectation that he could lunge/jump on anyone that walked by. He wanted to meet everyone. I don't want our Aussie to grow up thinking that he can react to anyone while walking down a suburb street. I don't know when would be the best time to introduce our Aussie to a suburb street with more strangers and dogs. We aren't in a rush, we just feel that he would need the exercise on top of running around in our backyard.
