I bought a new 2023 Rebel 500 ABS. This bike is a dream to ride and operate. Plenty of power it's light and easy to roll around the driveway or garage. My Rebel 500 just got home yesterday! I am a beginner rider and this is my first bike so I also installed engine guards on it as I am terrified that I might drop it, but hopefully this won't happen. I only rode it so far in the parking lot (and I loved it!), trying to refresh my skills and get accustomed with the bike, since I got my driving license 6 months ago and I haven't ridden anything since then as the weather outside was too cold. I am currently researching the possibility of adding a tachometer (it would have been nice to have, I really don't understand why Honda did not add one) and I also purchased the Rebel tank pads, they really fit with the look of the bike.

I love this bike! Honda is doing what our 2 main “American” cruiser motorcycle companies should be doing: making sleek, modern, cost-effective bikes. This has EVERYTHING I would want out of a HD sportster, 883 or any of the Indian scout series bikes for a fraction of the price. Indeed the rebel has a smaller power plant but it’s power to weight ratio coupled with its low seat height make it a superior ride in my opinion. Again, for the price you should be buying 2 of these instead of a single American cruiser. I know many would not agree with that assessment and I myself still dream of owning a scout or 2 as well as a sportster but realistically, I cannot justify the price for what I would be getting especially when companies like Honda exist and just price out the market with superior products. Thanks Kevin! Keep me up to date on all Honda Powersports products.

I got to ride the 1100 last summer and was surprised at how good it was. It has that cruiser look and feel but the handling of a modern bike. Easy win if I ever commit to a cruiser. Way better than the sportster I'd looked at or the yamaha.

You hit the nail on the bed bud! Exactly, power-to-weight isn't something a lot of people think about as all most people see is that engine size but don't realize the Rebel 500 is about 150lbs lighter and that makes a BIG difference when the 883 only makes a few more horsepower. Granted it does make a considerable amount more torque but I'd put money on the Rebel 500 winning a race any day of the week against an 883. Yeah, you get some things that the Honda doesn't have and you get chrome etc but not something I'd pay almost twice as much for but that's just me of course and everyone thankfully has different opinions, otherwise it'd be a boring world haha! I don't blame you one bit on wanting to own them. Life's too short not to experiment a little and try everything out, if possible. I'm as big of a Honda fanboy as they come but I'm not blind to the fact that there are TONS of cool stuff out there from other brands and we all need to spice things up a bit every now and then with something different, even me. It's been a bit since I owned anything other than a Honda but I owned a Slowzuki once lol! Yessir and thank you for the support, I really appreciate it...

I'm 1.81 and the bike is the right size. Everyone says a Rebel is a great beginner bike but I think it could just as well be your one and only bike. I almost bought the ADV150 scooter from your excellent, excellent video review. Now I’m looking at the Rebel 300 & 500. I love how you go into detail and sometimes the nitty gritty. When you talked about the extended air intake on the ADV150 compared to the PCX, I just close my eyes and smiled. That’s what I’m looking for. Imagine if Honda put the time into making reviews like this??? Now I just have to figure out which of these three bikes to choose. Rebel 300 fits the budget. But 500 would be so nice to have extra power.
@jones6162 жыл бұрын
Ary: I would go with the 500, I don't think the 300 will give you enough power. Power and/or "zip", speed, has consistently been the reason for my upgrading bikes. I don't want a big heavy cruiser with 100hp, that I can't pick up. I want a lighter bike with less hp but better wt to hp ratio. Shaft takes away maybe 3hp, and adds weight. I'm looking to trade a perfect Aero 750 (shaft) for a newer Rebel 500. The Rebel weighs over 100lbs less, but also has more hp than the Aero. Aero bhp is 40 at best, imo, which makes it underpowered for me. Get the 500. If power becomes an issue down the road at least it will be a longer road than the 300. Good luck and please drive defensively!

We did add a small windshield, crash bars and saddle bags. I really thought we'd buy another HD for her but we could not find one that fit what we were looking for. I didn't like the Sportster and the soft tails (in my opinion) have too much power for a beginner. ABS is a nanny. it keeps the tires from coming to a complete stop and skidding which will help keep the bike from becoming uncontrollable during panic braking. it doesn't make it stop "quicker" unless you're comparing a skidding stop to a stop where abs kicks in to prevent the skid. in that case the stop would absolutely be quicker and more stable. ABS has been standard on cars and trucks for a few decades now for a reason.

Add the cluster from Honda AT 1100 and some riding modes with dual channel abs. Some height adjustability with cruise control. Charge £500 extra on next model and it will be bike of the year. In my opinion, with the hike in fuel prices all over the world the manufacturer need to limit motorbikes to 1000cc (you can’t legally ride 180 mph anywhere so all the big cc’s are pointless gimmicks), unless of course, if they are used for professional racing. i think they need to work on rear suspension, i heard that if you driver over a pothole you can jump from saddle a bit. The streets in my country are not that great, waves and potholes everywhere. I wonder how much it costs to change the suspension and what options do you have

They're fun little bikes! Especially when you uncork the exhaust and let it breath a little so you can hear it while you're ripping around. Bang for the buck, they are definitely hard to beat - as long as you're not too tall.

@willyjimmy88812 жыл бұрын
I think the adding tech is where Honda could really stand out as long as it's not overly done. A bigger better display or even twin round displays would be interesting. So many parts already on the shelf could be grafted onto the Rebel. But that exhaust note on the 500 is so weak it's hard for any guy with a drop of testosterone in his body to love that on a cruiser. Come on Honda. In all seriousness I think that sexy azz burgandy on the 1100 is the color I'm putting on my new Helix plastics.
@HondaProKevin2 жыл бұрын
lol you cracked me up with the "drop of testosterone" part as you're spot on with the weak part! I know it's difficult for them to make something that will fly with regulations in every country around the world but they can do better with the sound... no doubt about it! Twin round displays would be cool, I'd love to see a nice tach thrown on there in one of them but Honda has a thing against them on cruisers apparently. The only cruiser I can think of from the last couple of decades would be the Magna and the VTX1800F. It was weird, not all VTX1800 models came with one but just the F model since it was their more "performance" oriented model. Even if a tach isn't technically necessary, it's cool. I think Honda plans to keep this platform fresh unlike the others so hopefully we'll see some cool new additions thrown at it soon. Heck yeah, that'll be one cool Helix with that Bordeaux Red Metallic pint thrown on there! The way the color changes depending on the light and just how deep it is, B-E-A-UTIFUL!

@@HondaProKevin I’d give another $800 to $1k for a drive shaft version. I remember in ‘79 when I bought a New Honda CX500 Custom, I paid $2,500 Out The Door for it and it was the best running bike I ever owned. Smooth ride, shifting and low maintenance. I could keep up with any bike except the Cafe bikes out there at the time.

Needs optional DCT. I know I sound like a broken record, but Honda having the DCT game exclusively locked down, in the motorcycle and scooter market, and not putting it on EVERYTHING as an option baffles me. I‘d even consider a Forza/ADV/SH350 with a single and DCT. 🤷♂️

Hi, I need advice. I just got my permit and in about 2 months I'll be doing my MSC, yes I've been on a bike. What's driving crazy is the engine size, either get a 300cc or 500cc? Sadly, I can't pay cash and I don't want to finance a used bike, but what everI get I want to keep for many years. My main need is for 98% freeway commute and I'm 6'1 at 250 pounds and I always stay at the speed limit (65 un SoCal and I don't want a ticket). I geared towards 300cc because it seems it can do 70mph, is $2k cheaper, I can learn a bit easier and I'll pay off quicker.

I’m thinking of taking my bike license, I have been a car driver all my life, I’m used to a manual gear box, I’ve heard the rebel comes with an automatic transmission, I can change gear with my hand but would find changing with my foot problematic. I’m a bike newbie, so is it fully automatic and would it make a good beginner bike. Thanks in advance for any comment.

Thanks for a great video (think I might get a slip on haha). I was especially interested in the hp and power to weight ratio. I'm currently riding an Aero 750 shaft, and it is def underpowered. At 518lbs plus loss of 2-3 hp due to the shaft, I'm not sure it even hits 40hp(bhp). In any event at 46hp and chain drive the 500 sounds just rt for me. I had an 80's model 400 (cm400t, I think) and that bike screamed, I loved it! Perfect size, power, it was just rt I never should have sold it. I laid it down one time, when I was unparking and front wheel didn't quite miss the curb. Honda had the bike configured so all the weight was on the handle bar and foot peg, nothing else touched the ground! Not a scratch on it! Anyway I'm looking to sell/trade my (pristine) Aero 750 for the rebel 500, and your vid was a big help. Maybe I can trade even for an earlier model 500? My Aero is like new, less than 1k miles, 2015, not a scratch. Shaft

The year wasn't a big factor for me but those with experience on this bike, would this assist with shifting?? Any help with shifting would be big for this newb taking the course in the spring . Advice appreciated (or any other entry level bike that is notably easy/forgiving to shift)!

I am very torn between the 2022 Rebel 500 and the 2022 Shadow Aero. I love the looks and color of the Aero. But, I am not excited about the weight, feet forward position, higher price, and dinosaur tech. I am not in love with the looks of the Rebel 500, but it is a lot more practical, better handling, lighter, and cheaper. I'm 5'3" and looking/cross-shopping both bikes. I've been riding a Rebel 250 since 2015. If I did a Rebel 500, I would do the green, add on the accessory brown seat, fork gaters, Honda Nylon bags, and would strongly consider a set of Pirelli MT60 endro tires for my terrible roads, some are tarred and chipped, others look like the moon, some have washouts, and some are good - plus would work great seeing what are down random dirt roads. I don't think the Aero would work great in those riding situations.

Dealers locally are wanting $1350 markup for this bike. Out the door with tax, etc. close to $8500. Do you think this is too much or is this to be expected considering 'rona and supply chain issues?
@HondaProKevin2 жыл бұрын
Sadly, mark ups like that are to be expected these days as much as I hate to say it. Unless you live in a part of the country that has a wholesale Honda dealer that doesn't charge those fees. Those used-to-be wholesale discount dealers aren't discounting them like they did pre-rona but at least they aren't tacking on thousands in BS fees like most are. What part of the country are you in? If you're somewhat close to TN, Southern Honda Powersports doesn't charge those fees. They don't pay me anything to say it but I've seen countless people make long trips out there and still save money by the time it's all said and done. Personally, I'd have a difficult time paying $8,500 because then you're not too far off from a Rebel 1100's MSRP at $9,399. However, then you tack on those dealer fees and of course it brings things back in line so-to-say, so it's a difficult spot to be in. It's all in your happiness at the end of the day though, if you don't mind paying an extra $1,350 to have the bike and to be able to enjoy this year - do it! Odds are, once you're out riding it, you won't think twice about it but I do hate seeing dealers get away with price gouging people like that and the more we all pay it, the more they will continue to do it.
