As a freshman international student coming to US a month before my classes started,I would say it was one of the smartest thing to be done,I did my placement exams,orientation, student ID,Ventra(Bus Card For City of Chigago),picked my classes,talked to many advisors on how to get SSN and work on campus. Also having a bank account is great too ,in my case I choosed Bank Of America because it was more international student friendly where they only required me a passport document to setup an account.

Great Professor, this is how content should be done. The information you provided is not only useful for the students but also for us who aren't thinking of doing masters but still are curious about how things work in usa. I have many friends doing MS currently but all of them post about going for shopping, visiting clubs etc. I hope they are taking care of them academics and prioritising their health and studies.

It is really interesting to see how different university is in the US compared to my student times in Germany (I immigrated to the US via an employment based Green Card). In Germany, you register for a curriculum but not for classes. You apply for spots in lab courses where spots are limited. So essentially as soon as you inscribe yourself for let's say Bachelor of Mathematics - it is already clear what you NEED to attend (the typical Analsys and Linear Algebra classes) as undergrad. As for housing - Students in Germans normally do not share rooms. They live in either student housing done by a local office of the "Studentenwerk" (students' service public company) but you have your own bedroom for yourself - with an extra lock - and share the kitchen, bathroom and toilet only. If you do not get one of those because your parents make too much money - there is only private housing market with market rents - which can be very expensive when living in bougie cities like Munich or Berlin. On the other hand, tuition fees are $0 for all students from the European Union. A little inscription administrative fee is paid every semester (6 months), some 200 Euros. For an international student NOT from a EU country (the permanent residency counts, not your citizenship) you pay tuition fees (albeit much lower than in the US, talking about $4,000 a year(!) - if you are not finished after a set number of semesters, it is cheaper before). With the student visa from the German embassy/consulate you have to go to the local Ausländeramt (foreigners' office) which can be in the townhall of the city or at the Landkreis-Verwaltung) to get your residency permit card (not permanent, tied to your studies). It is not centralized like USCIS in the US. At each time you extend it, you need to prove you did the classes and advance. SO in Germany the biggest mistakes for a non EU citizen would be: - Forgetting about going to the Ausländeramt to register and getting the residency card. Without it: No Bank account. No lease for a room or apartment. - Forgetting to carefully look at the curriculum and which courses you need to attend. German universities are often not campus-bound. They can have buildings at multiple places around the city. Study carefully the public transit maps and monthly fare cards heavily discounted for students. You'll need that to attend courses on different locations of the university. - Not contacting very early the department for foreign students of the university (and not only for the invitation letter to get the visa) - they organize housing in the Studentenwerk-listings for rooms. It is mostly first come first serve so please be EARLY. You'll not be heavily guided - a German university expects a high level of self-organization. YOU have to show up and ask. - Not making sure you do not need to do a pre-class because your school diploma obtained in your home country requires a mandatory pre-class. Typically this is done before the beginning of the winter semester (which begins October). So you could have mandatory prep classes when others enjoy their summer holidays. Missing them means rejection of your inscription.
@PascalGienger2 жыл бұрын
And last one - do not think you will just buy a car and drive to all the university departments like in the US. A quick look on fuel and parking prices should very quickly end those ideas ;-) You use a bicycle (many used bicycles for sale by students leaving), or public transportation which is normally good to excellent in university cities. I studied in Konstanz, and this 80,000 inhabitant city has 17 bus lines and a commuter rail line - and 9A/9B/9C bus brings you to the main campus 4-6x an hour.

I would also add that you should take your advisors' suggestions with a grain of salt. In most cases, the American academic advisors aren't too familiar with international students' situations (especially when it comes to employment). Of course, comply with the degree requirements as they request, but do not listen to any advertising that they do.

as long as they are not failing classes and GPAs are not falling below, it is all fine. You have no idea how many students beg me to give them a better grade because they are in probation. Why were they in probation? Because their GPA in the previous semesters fell below 3.0. Why did their GPA fell below? Because they were partying and not studying. A lot of students get kicked out of universities because they are unable to maintain their GPA for two semesters straight. So do not make such foolish statements. If they are able to maintain their GPA then they can do other things as I said in my video.
