Early and late in the season, stripers congregate in backwaters throughout the northeast. During season 15 of On The Water's Angling Adventures, Jimmy Fee and Capt Tom “Z” Zambetoglou from Simrad hit the backwaters in New Jersey in search of the last stripers of the season.
Though Jimmy and Capt Z were fishing the tail end of the striper migration, the same tactics can be used to find early season stripers. Expansive flats with dark, muddy bottoms hold heat from the sun, causing them to warm up earlier and cool down later compared to other shoreline structure.
Scaling back to lighter tackle and throwing soft plastics and other small profile baits is often the most effective technique, but depending on the time of year you may have an outside shot at larger fish as well.
