I'm really happy this technology is working its way into the kayak fisherman market. This is a huge leap forward for being efficient on the water. I've gotten pretty good at anchors and drift socks with a trolley system, but I would prefer to leave that behind. Hobie's fins are pretty good at locking onto a spot manually, but then you cannot stand up and fish, so you are less efficient. This market is progressing nicely and the competition will step up and innovate to be competitive.

Too bad there's so much negativity in these comments. I'm betting that those did say why not just buy a real boat or words to that effect have never tried a kayak. I gave up all my powered boats once I had a kayak for a short period of time. I have an Old Town Predator PDL which is the pedal version of The Predator 13. It is an excellent rough water Open Water boat. I've had it in the ocean with four and five foot swells and I've had it on places like Lake George with the wind ripping from the south stirring Up 3 and 4 ft waves with an occasional one over the bow. Very stable boat very comfortable for this 71 year old fishing fool!

I'd like to see him actually put that thing into the water. How do you transport it: trailer, bed of your pickup? How do you launch it when there is no sweet grassy knoll to launch from? Can you lift it? 'm 71 also and I will not be lifting 158 lbs. of kayak.
@mikefurness15983 жыл бұрын
@@daveyJ213 David I slide the boat in and out of the back of my truck on a Bed Extender without much trouble and now I'm 72. The biggest thing is getting the bow up on the bar of the Bed Extender or getting it off the bar when unloading. When I move the boat either in or out of the truck it's empty. No drive no rods reels and Tackle. It's just the boat and the seat and a couple items in the bow hatch all told probably 95 lbs. I try to launch right at the water and once it's in the water I move it off to the side of the ramp get all my gear out of the truck park the truck and then load the gear into the kayak. All told my truck is on the boat landing about three or four minutes. I have yet to lose any gear after leaving kayak and gear at the launch parking the truck and walking back. I think most fishermen are honest whether they be kayakers or boaters. You can do it!

@sardogdad4 жыл бұрын
I was on the water at 5:45am and pulled up to the ramp at a local lake near Fort Worth at 3:30 that afternoon. Motor was engaged the entire time. I ran at full speed some, regular trolling speed some (working in and out of docks, cover, shoreline, etc), and used spot lock quite a bit to cover Lilly Pad fields and other areas. The wind was out of the south at 6 to 8 mph and the lake runs primarily north to south, so I figure half the time I was going against the wind. I used a 100ah lead acid battery and usually when they start to weaken they do so slowly, so you'll see a drop in performance. I never got to that point. I came back to the ramp on an east to west trajectory, with a lot of boat chop, and I was still hitting 4 mph. I really want to get the lithium battery, because that lead acid battery is heavy and I'm an old guy.

I got into kayak fishing and got myself a Hobie Pro Angler 14. My regular ride is a Nitro ZV18. At some point, these big kayaks start blurring the lines between a kayak and an actual boat, except the kayak has you tippy toeing around the deck. If you’re going to kayak fish, go with a real kayak. My Hobie handles like a freaking barge, it’s a pain in the ass to load and unload -even with a trailer. I also have a 10 foot Ascent and have way more fun in that and can get to some pretty skinny water. If you’re dropping 4-5 grand, set up a John boat.

I am very curious about battery life and what kind of range you can fish. Until you experience what a Solix can do with this trolling motor you just don’t know its capabilities . It takes a very technical fisherman to understand how to fish a fish finder/trolling motor and gps spotlock all your fishing holes. To experience this fully you will have to spend about 7,000.00 by the time you buy fish finder, lithium battery and connect everything. It is definitely limited by cost, but if you don’t have room for a boat, want to avoid boat maintenance, and have the money, this is not a bad idea. You must take into consideration range of battery and whether or not the wiring and trolling motor are water proof enough to avoid rough water. You may have to wait until batteries are good enough to run all day and the saltwater version comes out.

To me anyway, if I was going to go this way with a yak, I’d want it with I-Pilot Link and its much better features set. After all, the list price is about $800. bucks cheaper than a Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 360. Maybe Johnson Outdoors (Old Town, Minn Kota, Humminbird, etc.) will wince when they start seeing Lowrance or Garmin heads installed, and offer I-Pilot Link next year. But I wouldn’t bet on an Upgrade Path being offered. Just a side note, I’ve been getting about 20-30 percent more run time on my Minn Kota motors after changing to three blade props. Im thinking for the price of the kayak you could buy a flat bottom boat that is bigger and way more range, speed, room etc.

@@ericporter2373 I'm just saying for the same money you can fish more water in a flat bottom boat. But that trolling motor underneath that kayak locked in place is going to be a problem when people think they can go shallow and they really can't the 1st time you snag a rock or a log you're gonna break a prop you're going to damage that motor
@outdoorsman42454 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for everybody else but for me the shallow water capabilities is what got me in a kayak. With my kayak me in it and all my gear I can float in 4 inches of water.
@ericporter23734 жыл бұрын
@@outdoorsman4245 yeah, they definitely have to pay attention and I probably wouldn't use in shallow rivers. But getting in to tight spots and being able to throw in truck or on top of car and drag or wheel around while pond hopping are the huge benefits for kayaks

@taticalbassin, could you guys do a video based on how to catch bass in abnormally warm and low water. I am unsure how your lakes and stuff are but up here in the New England the water is anywhere between 83 to 86 where I fish. Which is VERY warm for this time of year in some places 10 degrees warmer than normal. And on top of that alot of the water in places I fish is between 6-10 feet lower than normal and that's not including some of the reservoirs I fish. I thought the fish would be ultra aggressive but I have been proven wrong as of late and would like some tips on baits and stuff to use during this time. I've done both power and finesse, cranked deep mussel beds and flipped the heaviest of cover but usually get one or two fish on 8 hours fishing. Thanks!

This looks cool, but messing with that remote all the time seems like a pain in the ass. Not to mention, shallow water and weeds. Once that motor is out of the water your paddling around a 180lb kayak(or more). God for bid you run out of battery (or something breaks...broke prop) 4 miles from the launch. I would not want to make that paddle back....lol! I'm sure its a great boat, but just not for me...good review!

Tim..... I might be missing something here so please let me know. When looking up the Ultrex with i-pilot link I am not seeing any that are 12v 45lb. I think this would play heavily into the pricing. If the boat were coming with a 24v 80lb then I think the pricing would be comparable. Is the 24v able to just be wired up with a 12v and therefore produce half of the thrust and vice versa? If not, seems like the pricing isn't very accurate and may be better represented with the cheaper i-pilot models. So $2300ish for the Ultrex and $1700 for the hull seems a little expensive. Love the innovation on this and can see how this would be extremely beneficial on the water. Especially since I just spent a weekend battling crazy wind on my kayak.

The motor console is designed around the Minn Kota Powerdrive motor, not the Ultrex.
@MonsterChuck4 жыл бұрын
@@ryanlillypad Thank you for clarifying. This would further the point I was trying to make, though. A 55lb thrust Powerdrive w/i-pilot is $1170 (the 45lb I was finding was $570 but does not come with i-pilot). That would price this hull at ~$2830.... That is STEEP! Again, I really think this kayak is awesome but it is difficult for me to see the price justification. I will have to get out on one to see though.

at what point does it cease to be considered a kayak?

Also can you fit a pedal drive if you wanted to switch up for the day?
@tacticalbassin4 жыл бұрын
I don’t believe the pedal drive is interchangeable. That would be really cool if they make one to fit 👍

Do you NEED a helix or other electronic for spot lock? It won’t just keep you in a random spot you choose?
@tacticalbassin4 жыл бұрын
Nope wherever you spotlock the motors internal gps will hold you 👍

Question for Tim: Is the Kayak safe enough on the water against Water Moccasins from getting in? Maybe no encounters just yet.
