Just want to say, knowing what that “recycled plastic” statistic normally means really helps it make sense why the blue option uses less recycled plastic. Basically, as long as the company that molds the casing is taking scrap and grinding it down, they can reuse it a couple times. Depending on color (due to pigments being added into the mix) and types of plastics, you can only feasibly do this maybe 2-3 times before the plastic becomes unusable anymore and basically becomes brittle or error prone in the molding process. So, all it really says is that they’re doing what other plastic manufacturing companies are doing; reusing the product that failed to meet QA standards to try again. And the main reason it’s so misleading is because they don’t want to tell you that actually recycling plastic outside of a factory setting is hard and expensive. Think of every soda bottle you might have used last month. Each of those bottles would need to be collected, sorted, cleaned, melted down, and then remolded into a new bottle; and that’s only if it _can_ be. Like I said before, you can only use plastic a couple times before it’s basically useless. At which point, it’s just thrown out and goes into the landfill the same as any other thing. Really, I never trust those statistics companies like to put out for plastic recycling. But that’s just me. But back to my main point, the blue will have less plastic recycling going on because of the color. Once you add a pigment in, you severely cut your reuse down, and on top of that, you could get a color mismatch; since all colored plastics are formed by adding pigments to white plastic base, the ratio has to be controlled. But if it’s not 100% the same every time, the resulting color might come out slightly different. Makes it really hard to reuse with other batches, cause it might not be the exact same pigment, and might cause streaking. All my experience with this comes from my 1.5 year job where I worked for a local plastics factory that produced automotive parts. Anything that was hidden from view was a lot easier to make, because color differences weren’t going to be noticed as much. But anything consumer facing was a lot tighter on tolerances.

2021 Paperwhite is the same price with ads, $20 more ($120USD) without ads.. so not sure why anyone would buy this? Better backlighting, warm light adjustment, bigger screen, water resistant. Only 8G of storage but uh, I find it quite silly that anyone needs their Kindle to read audiobooks stored on the device. If that's what you're buying a Kindle for, I dunno, I think you're missing the point.

The thing I miss more on the kindles are the physical buttons, my first kindle was a kindle keyboard (3rd gen) so it came with two buttons on each side, one larger to advance pages, and one smaller to go back. To me, the only reason I updated to the Kindle Paperwhite was de light, the old kindle required an external source of light to be used on the dark; but otherwise to me was a perfect device (well, minus the keyboard XD).

I own the original Kindle Keyboard and an earlier model of the Paperwhite (I forget which one). I just upgraded to the latest Paperwhite, exclusively for the flush screen. On my previous Kindles I was constantly frustrated at how the depressed screen would collect crumbs and fluff around the edges. For that reason, and the warm light, I am loving my new Paperwhite!

I have the 2022 Signature Edition. From someone who loves paper books, the smell, the feel, the shelf decoration, it's actually better than I thought it would be. I've recently gotten into the habit of compacting my belongings more and more. Got a shikibuton for a bed so I can roll it up and stuff it in a trunk if need be, and now this. My library of books has always been exhausting to pack up, plus they get heavy. 10/10 recommend.

If this had page-turning buttons and a warm light, it would be the PERFECT device right now. Basically, I am looking for a Nook, but as a Kindle. It's why the Nook GlowLight 3 and 4 are still two of my top favorite e-readers out of all the current ones - right up there with the Kindle Oasis 1 and 3 and the Kobo Sage and Libra 2.

The paperwhite and even newer kobos use newer eink called carta 1200 which has higher refresh rate than the older carta screens even though all are 300 ppi. That's why page turn animations are not currently available for oasis either because it uses an older screen

Seems a bit overpriced for the basic model, I’d have thought it would be £79 tops, not £95. It’s only a few weeks since I bought the Kindle Paperwhite Kids on offer for £99, which has double the warranty, a nice cover included, flush design, larger display with more led, warm lighting and a far bigger battery inside.

Yeah, considering the 2021 Paperwhite has a slightly larger screen, much better backlighting, color warmth feature, and water resistant.. for the same price? Not sure who this is targeted towards. 2021 Paperwhite is a better deal all around. The new basic Kindle would have to be $70 for it to make sense.

OMG, I'm SO GLAD I found your channel!!! (liked and subscribed) you have a true gift for teaching/explaining and listening to you talk has put me in a really good mood 🙏 This comes at the perfect time. 💯As a professional procrastinator/digger of info, I had it on my mind for the past 3 months to purchase a kindle, going back and forth between model choices and listening to several videos 🤯. Yours is THE BEST and I'm happy my procrastination is rewarded by the release of this new/old/upgraded model, that I can purchase as my "gateway" Kindle. The past 2 years, just before the pandemic, I re-discovered reading through Audible. Years of undiagnosed ADHD were probably the reason why I was finding harder and harder to stick to reading, but having heard of the synergy between Audible and Kindle and that (I heard) you can easily find your spot where you left off back and forth between the two modalities, I have been looking forward to going back to my recent Audible reads and re-acquaintain myself with text reading. I took a lot of notes on Audible using bookmarks and now I want to learn how to take them on kindle. Do Audible bookmarks show up on kindle? I will probably get your book too, I bet you explain all that in there. 💡One question on the light source: all the Kindles (whether better or worse) have light that shines ONTO the digital ink page, right, as opposed to FROM the page, right? On this note, I am fascinated by the digital ink technology, are there videos you recommend that show it at the microscopic level? Are these tiny "physical" elements that rotate with one black and one white side? What shape are they and how do they stay in place? Thank you! Grazie!!! ❤🙏 A Newly minted American Citizen of Italian Origin, living in California PS: The only thing I feel super-guilty about is NOT supporting the printed book market. I love independent bookstores and I still thing a printed paper page would be the absolute best experience, if that were easier for me. But I guess things have to change...

The best cost/benefit Kindle to buy right now is the 2021 Paperwhite, not this one. It's the same price and less capable... it's less than 1" smaller, so that isn't a reason to give up all the other benefits.

I discovered a wider screen doesn’t equate to better reading. On my kobo Libra I expanded the margins till the screen text width felt “right”. That comfortable reading width is about the same width as what you’d get from a kindle basic. So I’m not really using the wider screen for actual reading. For buying future eReaders I’ll ignore screen width dimensions as I don’t use all that extra real estate.

I need this. I haven't figured out an excus - err - I haven't figured out exactly why, but I need this. I love my Paperwhite Signature, but I NEED this one, too. On a side note, I use one of those "phone straps" for my Kindle. It's just a short elastic strap with a hook on either end. Hook it onto the back of your phone/Kindle and it makes it even easier to hold. I only tell you this because the hooks on mine are just thick enough that it prevents me from accidentally bumping that stupid power button. Just a word to the wise. :)

100 people, 101 tastes 😀 I have various "international" models, from Kindle 2 (the predecessor to Keyboard) to Voyage (and Scribe on pre-order). I _love_ haptic feedback "non-buttons" on Voyage, even better than mechanical buttons. I often read web clippings on my Kindles, and, when turning pages by tapping the screen, I often accidentally hit a hyperlink - very annoying. (Not an issue in books, though.) I believe that Oasis is the only current model with page turn buttons. It's a shame, IMO. It seems there _will_ be a next Oasis - this might tempt me into buying one.

9:05 - It might have to do with battery size. Amazon does not list battery capacity in Ah, so I can't be sure, but the battery on the Basic is probably a tad smaller than on Paperwhite or Oasis. Page animation consumes more power than a single simple redraw, so they might have omitted it in order to keep the same battery rating measured in days of (very light) reading.

Having seen a number of reviews, I was immediately put off by the ghastly fingerprints (never an issue with the 4th Gen) So, I plumped for the white version. No issues, at all, even although I keep it in a case/sleeve some of the time, I love using it "naked." Fingerprints are a total no, no and there's no white option on the 11th Gen. USB type C is tempting though. Who knows, the 12th Gen may be issued this year and maybe it'll come in white, or grey, which won't be as fingerprint prone!

Maybe do a video about how you feel about the blue color now. Still too distracting or did you get used to it

You get used to it after a while. I also like how it stands out from all my other devices. It’s not the biggest deal in the world, but I would still recommend the black one if this will be your primary Kindle.

Sorry to hear about all those issues you have with the power button placement. I got lucky, the messenger bag I use has a pocket on the outside that perfectly fits my Paperwhite and never hits the button. But yeah, the button on the button is awful placement.

Amazon isn’t making anyone pay more to remove ads, you are choosing to pay less via ad-supporting pricing. If you do some research you’ll see amazon doesn’t sell devices at profit and ad-supported pricing does reduce the price to consumers. In countries were ad-supporting pricing does not exist, kindles are sold at the higher (non-ad) price.

I have a 2019 Paperwhite and I’m considering trading in for the new basic. The flush screen on the Paperwhite makes it feel like I’m reading off of a phone which kinda breaks the immersion for me.

This video was really helpful. My history of using Kindles goes back to about 2009, when I bought my first Kindle. I bought my first Kindle Paperwhite in 2014. Although I have bought every generation of the Paperwhite ever since, I found that did most of ebook reading either on my laptop, my cell phone, or my desktop. I'm not quite sure why that is but I think it was a matter of convenience. When Kindle Basic was issued I didn't give it much thought; I thought of it as being a cheaper version of the Paperwhite, not quite as good but suitable for those who couldn't afford a more expensive e-reader. Yet one of my anxieties about investing so much money in Kindle e-books over the years -- I now have over 5,000 -- has been that I dreaded having to shell out about $200 for each new reading device any time I lost one or it became unusable. That seemed too much to pay. On top of that, I found that I wasn't using the device as much anyway because I couldn't slip it in my pocket, like a mass market paperback. When I really wanted to sit down and read, why would I use my Paperwhite when I could just as easily -- and more comfortably -- use my laptop? When I was on-the-go, the cell phone seemed to be a quicker and better option. Therefore, this video came as an eye-opener. Yes, the Kindle Basic is made of lighter material but that makes it more convenient, not less so. It is smaller in size but, as you pointed out, that only makes it more fun to use and more convenient to carry with me. It is not unreasonably small, like a cell phone, and it is not as clunky as a laptop. It is just the right size, like a small paperback, only much lighter and thinner and good for reading in the dark or outside on a windy day as well as indoors anytime. The text, as you pointed out is crisp and clear. Best of all, it is affordable so I don't have to worry about having to replace it. You were right about this Kindle. I don't know how I overlooked it. Thank you for posting this video.

Because laptop screens are bright and harsh, and the kindle e-ink attempts (quite successfully, in my estimation) to simulate reading off of paper. That's why. Fair enough if you find looking at a blaring LCD/LED display comfortable, but I don't when reading long-form texts.

I was going to bite the bullet but I still have quite a few paper books to read. Maybe by the time I find enough time to finish those a new model will be available. I have been using the Kindle app on my phone though for the Bible and it's been great. Too many pages in the paper versions.

If you´re 'on a budget', don't mind 1/2 inch more bezels and you're into text-only (because of 4Gb) you could get the same crisp 6", 300ppi screen and better lighting for half the price on a well cared Paperwhite 3 (2015) and with a bit of luck you can find it with the case included.. I have the version 5 and love the bigger screen & warm light for reading comfortably at home but kept my Paperwhite 3 for carrying in my back pack due to portability, the Basic 2022 is a bit smaller but that's it, not enough to justify the spending, for me of course.

I have a paperwhite gen 10 my first Kindle. Wont get yanother . Its easier navigating on the app on my Galaxy tablet plus its iffy about connecting with wifi networks . Won' t recognise networks . I end up having to use mobile hotspot. The one great thing about it is the size. Its really compact and the visual. I like white text on a grey background and i stay focussed for longer than i can with physical books

I would enjoy if I would downgrade the firmware in my Kindle Paperwhite 5 from 5.14.2 to 5.14.1 ... this is huge difference in display of a text and contrast. After forced update (by Amazon) the text is lighter grey not so dark and crispy (as you said) there is in general lower comfort of reading. Is there any solution to roll back or wipe the new firmware? I would install the older version manually if there would be a chance with old factory firmware. But after hard reset the new firmware stays the same.
