While the new Defender is extremely capable offroad JLR have really targeted it at the majority of it's customers who will never take it offroad. The Grenadier is targeted more at customers who will use it for offroad and overlanding or for towing a boat, trailer or horse float. I think it will not be seriously cross shopped by customers.

Yes that’s always been my argument, 99% of high end 4x4,s are bought by people that never take them off road, or if they do it’s not extreme rock crawling etc. as such they are fitted with low profile road tyres and are set up for speed and comfort which the majority of customers want. It annoys me when these vehicles are tested against vehicles that are set up for extreme off-roading and then are bagged out and given bad press because they don’t preform.

Not sure they will be cross shopped as much. Entirely different classes. The Ineos is 1 ton running gear easily modded for extreme off road use and overlanding. The Defender is a big, hard to modify piece of street plastic, with IRS, fake center locker and so on. The Defender sits at maybe 10% of the Ineos solid axle, twin locked, easy to add 35s capabilities. But its not as luxurious as the Defender. The Defenders road manners and comforts will appeal to the more hipster, Yuppie crowds. My cross shopping would be Bronco, 4 Runner we own now, Gladiator, Landcruiser....HOWEVER Toyota is out as I want to stick with solid axles, twin lockers and factory winch. To pay 85K vs 65-70K for the others, what do you get? Well about 50,000.00 in One Ton running gear, beefed up transmission with heavy duty torque convertor, Gear driven and cooled t-case. near Dana 60 running gear, one ton suspension and frame...What would it take to add all that to a Bronco or 4 Runner....Yep, 50K. The Defender....I don't think so. Waiting on ours as we speak. For me the confidence to know it will not break and need so many mods, the price is well worth it.

Towing requires a comfortable smooth ride with good steering and the power to get a trailer through either a field or up a slipway. The granadier doesnt seem like something you would want to drive for hours and hours below 60.. but the defender can definatley make it through that field or up a slipway.

I’d take the Land Rover Defender. Can easily upgrade wheels and tires to make it so much more capable off road if that what you’re after. Defender seems so much nicer overall. I’m also somewhat skeptical of Ineos and how reliable they will actually be in the long run. Not that LR is known for reliability but Ineos is so new I’d be nervous about service, parts, reliability etc.

The center speedometer and gauge cluster in the Grenadier is a deal breaker for me. I really wish they would add a traditional gauge cluster over the steering wheel.

The Defender can be had for around $65,000 with ALL the off road features and 18” wheels. Would be the better comparison to the Grenadier and 2/3 the price.
@loum.43775 ай бұрын
Grenadier has been from the start a status symbol. If you buy a loaded one 96K, it will hold value far longer that any Land Rover. My L405 Range Rover lost 50% (62K) in 4 years. A broke down LR costs thousands to repair most of the time

The “Defender” is just a Mall Crawler. With all its electronics, this would be the LAST car I’d take out to the backwoods. This car will leave you stranded. Shoddy build quality. The Grenadier is by far the better more reliable vehicle. Look up Grenadier Ronny Dahl.

How would you compare the drive of the Ineos compared to the 2024 4Runner ORP/Pro?

Feels more tank like, so it’s not as soft

Really the new Defender occupies the spot the RangeRover Classic did, luxury offroading. I think they should have not named it the "Defender" and that would allow it to stand on it's on feet and not be judged by it's predecessor. Plus it would have left Landrover open to build something like the Grenadier if they so chose to. In fact they should have collaborated with Ineos and sold the Grenadier as the "New Defender" and the current one as something else. I have to say I twitch when I see your thumbs inside the wheel, I grew up on and was taught to drive on standard steering systems and if you hit a rock the steering will kick and break your thumbs. I was just driving my 1968 Series 109 before watching this and been teaching my daughter to drive it, so that's high on my radar. If I had the money, I would be utterly torn on which of these vehicles to buy, both offer certain things, but the lack of a heated steering wheel on the Grenadier is crazy for the price. As I get older, heated seats and steering wheel really are nice.

You are correct about thumbs inside the steering wheel; however, those days are long gone. Like me, your showing your age Colinpark! :)

@@tdsmith Not long gone, just uncommon these days, I get the joy of reliving my youth by driving the 109. Of course now I can afford to replace batteries and such and don't have to handcrank it on a date, like I was when young and broke.
@tdsmith5 ай бұрын
@@Colinpark The 109 is an iconic Land Rover. You are lucky to own one. It must be gasoline, or you could not crank it. :) Most mainstream cars had transitioned to power steering by the late 1980s and early 1990s. Which, at my age, seems like yesterday.

Ineos for me. I will never trust JLR ever. Also, the ineos was actually made to take a continuous beating. I can put up with the BMW engineering quirks.

We’re not living in caves anymore. Why not have a vehicle that is refined inside yet extremely capable outside. To achieve this though it has to be reliable. If the weakest point is the tech, then make it still workable by being able to bypass the problem. Then fix it when able. I really don’t understand the ‘either or’ in this day & age.

How can you seriously call the Defender an off roader? In its current state, it should not be driven on anything more than a gravel road.
