I really enjoy watching your videos Robert because the way you present your information, you don't come off as some snobby professor it's more like your a friend instead. Fun fact. My great great uncle going back almost 500 years ago Juan De Zaldivar actually petitioned King Charles to colonize the Philippines but Juan died before the King approved it and instead went with Legazpi who was another Basque. Juan De Zaldivar was a captain for Coronado during his Expedition and has traveled through New Mexico on the way to Kansas looking for Cibola. Juan De Zaldivar was going to finance his Expedition to the Philippines with silver money in Zacatecas just like another of my great great uncle's Juan De Onate funded his New Mexico Expedition.

Bellas descripciones de la complejidad cultural de Nuevo México. "Venao" versus "venado," "colorao" versus "colorado" -- the dropping of that 'd' also prominent as a colloquial feature of Spanish even in Spain, as in Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc. Great episode!

I really liked this episode!! As Auturo says, exposing the complicity of Nuevo México, but also that we are indeed puro mexicano!

That was one of the best explanations of the New Mexico people I’ve heard. It takes the argument away from people trying to tell other people what they are. I can still call myself Spanish and others can call themselves mestizo’s etc., no argument, respect what we call ourselves and what was told to us by our forefathers. We are what we are! Thanks for being the professor that is willing to tell it like it is, based on research. Also, I had a friend from Madrid ,Spain who’s mother was a Spanish linguist, specializing in ancient Spanish languages. When she talked to my Father, from Socorro N. M., she said just what you said, my Father used several words that were very old Spanish, she was amazed. Weno!

Where does the aspiration of our s come from ?
@robmartinez7517

It is rural Spanish, it comes from people speaking for generations away from centers of learning, also Puebloan and Genizaro Indian pronunciation making its way into the language, it is not frozen in time, it is the culmination of all kinds of influences through the centuries. It is not archaic pronunciation, it is not Ladino, or Spanish found in Spain.

@@robmartinez7517 is there any similarities or patterns that other latinos share with northern New Mexican Spanish? For example does cuban Spanish aspirated the s in the same places as our Spanish?

Yes there are similarities but also differences, the Native populations also effected the language over the centuries so they will be different.
