Thank you so much, Rob!!! My mother use to say that one of our ancestors lost their land in a poker game - part of the land that is now Valles Caldera. I’ve never found anything to support that story - and she never said when it might have happened. My maternal grandmother’s family is Baca/Cabeza de Baca. Continuing to work on that section of our genealogy. Some stories have been especially tough to learn about the treatment of my Pueblo ancestors by my Spanish ancestors.

We are related, The Baca house in las Golondrinas in La Cienega, was my Great great grandfathers, I was told he lost the ranch in a poker game to the Ortiz y Pinos. 🤷🏻‍♀️

we like use more the word virreinal no colonial because they haven't a traditional colonial system, virreinatos have a lot of authonomy and land grants was a prove..but very interesting speech

I would not call it colonial period as Nuevo México was not a colony, it was an integral part of the Spanish empire, although not 100% defined in extensions.

It was more a colony of Nueva Espana or what is now Mexico. Mexico was a colony of Spain, Spain extracted natural resources, ie mineral wealth and took it to Spain. That is a colony. None of New Mexico's natural resources went to Spain, rather to areas of Mexico. A colony is an integral part of an empire, like the British colonies in North America. Thanks for watching.

I grew up playing at La Vega in San Luis, Colorado, part of the Sangre de Cristo Land Grant, I think. If I'm correct, the Vega is one of the only 2 remaining land commons in the country. The other is Boston Commons in Mass. The Vega is still used for grazing as was it's original purpose. Please correct me if I'm not accurate. I'm writing from memory and not research.

My Great great grand parents had 8 sections of land in Lincoln County and the Government took it from them because they couldn’t pay property taxes anymore after they lost most of their sons in WW1 and WW2.

Hello I was told my great grandfather came from Portugal they were in a place called San Marcel it was washed away in a flood an moved to California

I hAve a original 1836 Spanish land grant document filed in Beaver County, Oklahoma. It is thecorginal document, stsmped when filed. My Great grandfather was the clerk for the county. I can send ya a picture of rhe document.

@rob martinez do land grants still exist today? are they are still relevant or is it a thing of the past? and how are land grants different than land patents?

Land grants from the Spanish and Mexican periods still exist in New Mexico. The challenge has been US land law interpreting ancient Spanish land laws in place for centuries.

Something I'm not sure if you're aware of or not, after Franco left power a new monarchy was put in place. The current king of Spain, Felipe Seis de España, is related to the British monarchy. Most monarchs all across Europe are related these days. I wouldn't expect too many future disputes between English and Spanish speaking countries over who gets to rule former Spanish territories. They're on the same team now. Their focus is on Russia. It'll be many years before any English speaking and Spanish speaking countries go to war with one another.

Land Grants, we're also given to early Americans in the early years of America. The NATIVE AMERICANS, REALLY, GOT TAKEN, IN MOST CASES. THE NATIVE AMERICANS, ARE NOW GETTING A BREAK, BECAUSE OF CASINOS.

Both the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Censuses list "Los Valles de San Antonio" which listed hundreds of residents for that location !! I have not been able to pin down the exact location, although I have an idea that it was Southeast of Las Vegas at or near what is now referred to as La Liendre !! Hopefully, You have some info on this !!

Not sure. My guess would be in the vicinity of Anton Chico. Could be La Liendre today.

@@robmartinez7517 If I remember correctly, I think my Grand Father, Epifanio Duran, born in 1867, was Baptized at Anton Chico !! I have previously checked with various offices at the Court House in Las Vegas, but no one had any idea as to it's location!! Thanh You for your prompt reply !!

Thank you for sharing, my family (Gonzales) owned thousands of acres in northern NM about 8 miles out of Las Vegas NM , Mineral Hill is what it was called. They got their land through this system hundreds of years ago. Sadly it was all sold in the 40's...

Robert you need to read a real land grant they are specific I would be happy to educate you you misconception you are excerpting false pretenses to those that may seek to convey inherited land grant from ancestors and I can give you examples My Greatest grandmother was Dolores Aramijo And Alonso Garcia de Noriega ans Esteban Jaun Garcia de Noriega are my Greatest grandparents and I can prove it
