Thank you for this video series. My great-grandfather Cordova was born in Mora and later migrated to the coal-mining towns upriver from Trinidad, Colorado.

Thanks for watching! Yes, my father from Mora did the same thing to Denver after WWII, the great migration out of the mountain towns of northern New Mexico to the cities for work.

I taught high school English in West Texas for 36 years before moving to Colorado. We owned a place on the Moon Dance Ranch outside of Las Vegas for a few years, close to Tecolotito. A decade or more before I retired from teaching, I had the good fortune of meeting Rudolfo Anaya, and I had a wonderful conversation with him. I taught his Bless Me, Ultima every year after that, and your presentation on Mora and Las Vegas brought back many good memories. Mora is one of New Mexico's best kept secrets and I loved driving through there. And I read that Billy the Kid, after being initially incarcerated was held for a brief time in the Las Vegas jail. Robert, I intend to view every one of your presentations in the future. Though my wife and I live near Pagosa Springs on a small farm and I play guitar at night downtown, I feel that a large part of me will always be with New Mexico. I'm sure that you can understand that. Thank you greatly.

I was born in Albuquerque Nov. 12 1941 and my Parents moved to Las Vegas very shortly after I was born where I grew up till 1952. We live up on the Mesa, at that time it was known as the Story lake project. It is now called the Las Vegas Wild Life Refuge. We then moved 12 miles south of Las Vegas near a small settlement (Village) we knew as Gabaldon. The house we lived in Burned down. I have many fond memories of those times and would like to hear from some one from that time and area. I am now 82 years old many of my friends were of Mexican decent and we had many great times and adventures growing up.

The mis-named U.S. Mexican War was actually an opportunistic land grab by Kearney, who took over New Mexico without firing a shot !! My father always claimed his family had come to Trinidad, Colorado from Mora, but the 1860 and1870 Census listed them in Los Valles de San Antonio which I have been unable to definitely place !! Possibly, it was located SE of Las Vegas at a place now called La Liendre !! My Grandfather, born in 1867, was baptized in Anton Chico which is downstream from that location !! Hopefully You have some way to verify this, because people at the county offices in Las Vegas had no idea where it could have been !!

North central New Mexico, before Spanish conquest, was settled by Chichimec natives from north central Mexico in the late 16th century. After the Spanish-Chichimec war the Chichimecs assimilated into Spanish culture and were granted land by the crown of Spain. The original Hispanic families of north central New Mexico comes from this tribe.

I'm gonna guess Mora was named after the Rio de Mora which shows up on maps since 1758. Most likely a named given because of the wild berries. Several maps show Rio de Mora before the area was inhabited by Hispanic settlers.

Being the so called state historian being right there in front of the Plaza Hotel and talking about Stephen Kerny why didn't he point out the building roof top he addressed the local Hispanic community telling them for the first time they were now subjects of the occupying American government ? Second, Anton Chico wasn't founded in the middle to late 1800s, it was founded, deserted, then reestablished for good around 1836 !! Really Tom ???
@robmartinez7517 Жыл бұрын
Salvador Tapia, who was an original settler of Anton Chico, is one of my ancestors. Yes, Anton Chico was settled by him and other citizens in 1822, then the area was abandoned and then re-settled in the mid 1830s. Church records start in the mid 1850s. A post office was established at Anton Chico by 1872. Stephen Kearny entered New Mexico at Las Vegas in 1846. Plaza Hotel was built in 1882. But it is an interesting fact you point out about Kearny addressing the New Mexicans. Cheers!

The Colonial Mexican Period in 1815? The Mexican Period started in 1824. That's when Mexico officially became a nation with a Constitution and Mexican flag under Estados Unidos Mexicanos, a very young nation. New Mexico/Arizona , California or Texas territories did not participate in Mexicos (New Spain) independence or political battles in that very distant part of New Spain, 1500 miles from NM in an ancient era is another world. Those territories of which is central Mexico today, Mexico City areas. Mexican officials claimed the far northern territories after independence and headed to what is todays US SW after independence about 1824, considered estranjeros up north, where Mexican officials brought down Spains 300 years flag in New Spain, replaced by Mexico's brand new flag which was gone in 1848 in the SW, replaced by the US flag. Enough of this Chicano Studies history revision by our northern NM historian. I really think an unbiased Spanish Colonial Anglo historian would do better than immigrant Mexican Chicano educated NNM historian, we may as well have a Mexican historian. NM did have a California Mexican immigrant as director of NM Muesum several years ago, who didn't know the difference between Onate and DeVargas... I know because I was present and corrected him.
