New Mom Orangutan Tenderly Checks Her Baby

1st time mom - Summer gave birth to a beautiful baby boy on Sunday 28th April 2024
In this video Summer treats us to more tiny glimpses of her precious newborn. The love for her baby is clear as she tenderly lifts up her baby boy to clean and check him over, she then rolls over, holding him close to her to relax and let him feed - just so heartwarming !
Huge congratulations to Blackpool Zoo and the team on the birth of another critically endangered Bornean orangutan baby, the second in a year. The baby joins his family:
Kawan - dad, Cherie - Aunt, and Jingga and baby Jarang

21 year old, Summer seemed to be coping really well with her newborn baby and first impressions were that she is a wonderful doting mom and the baby was feeding well during the visit. Summer was the last baby born at Blackpool Zoo before the arrival of baby Jarang 21 years later
Summer and her baby were sharing the same enclosure as Jingga and Jarang and the 2 moms were cohabiting well together
Kawan the father of the 2 baby boys was very interested in his new family and spent a lot of time watching them from the enclosure he is sharing with Summer's older sister Cherie.
Blackpool Zoo's Orangutan family are part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)
The father of the new born baby orangutan 14 year old Kawan moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands and was an instant hit with the resident female orangutans Cherie Summer and Jingga
He came to the zoo as part of the European Endangered Species program after his much loved predecessor Ramon was moved to a new group in Germany where he has just become a new father himself
Kawan was specially selected by experts to join the female group at Blackpool Zoo and has settled into his new role as alpha male orangutan very well
There are currently 7 Bornean Orangutans at Blackpool Zoo consisting of adult females Cherie Summer and Jingga , Alpha Male Kawan , baby Jarang and the new male baby orangutan
