Agreed @DanDanTheFireman is being patient, calm, and so supportive. It makes a tremendous difference! My husband and I have helmet communicators so he gives me tips and encouragement when I practice and I've found it is so much better than having MSF instructors yelling at you over the sound of 12 motorcycle engines. My MSF instructors were generally fairly patient but they still had to shout just to be heard. Even though I cognitively knew they were mostly raising their voices just for volume there is still a very visceral response to being yelled at and it added to my nerves during the course and while learning.

My husband's eyesight went bad when he was in college. He has never ridden a bike. Eventually he had corneal transplants. He has holes in his vision still so to be safe will never ride, but when I was 55 he helped me learn. When I rode in traffic for the first many times we'd plan my ride and he would make sure to stay right behind me just in case I stalled or downed the bike. I did stall it, but never downed it. It helped a lot knowing that he was there literally protecting my rear end. Married 37 years anyway.

So i already got used to clutch+ keeping the rpm in some unexpected situation, so i can just brake and that is all, or just drop the clutch and accelerate out. So cool she got a bike she can flat foot. I saw a guy get his girl a bike she had to tip toe on and dropped her bike day 1 in the parking lot. I told him, imagine if she does that at a red light with a car next to her. Some people just don't use sense.

My husband bought me a 750 Shadow right after I took my first class. I was only 5'4". I could only touch one foot on the ground at a time. We lived only two miles from the dealer and my husband had paid him to ride it to our place for me. What a surprise!!! The next day he called them and kindly asked if he could exchange it for something else that would "fit" me. Pretty sure it was the large tip he gave them the day before that they agreed to be picked up by him and ride it back to the dealer. He then got me a 250 which I have ridden for 8 years now and still enjoy. Considering that I won't be riding across country, it will serve my purposes for the rest of my life, even teaching my children and grandchildren.

It would be nice if more bike manufacturers had shorter bike offerings. I'm 5'5" with a 29" inseam (so not tall, but not super short either) and the only 200-500cc bike I could flat foot when we went bike shopping was the Honda Rebel. Short riders shouldn't be limited to cruisers, and while experienced riders can get away with not flat footing having a solid footing is really important for someone just learning. You would think a few manufacturers would design smaller standard bikes with shorter seat heights!

That's what happened to me during the class. I had never ridden before and felt so rushed. My husband who has never ridden took me on as his project. He'd follow me a parking lot 1/2 mile from home and we'd practice there with tennis balls cut in half to mark my swerve, fast stop, and sharp curve turn. Can't tell you how many hours he spent with me in the sunshine, rain, heat, and cold, but he was just as excited to see me pass the DMV test with a 96 at age 56! I only started riding a few weeks before her. It would've been great to have someone to show me the ropes. I took the MSF class but it really wasn't enough for me. The MSF instructors were great but there's only so much they could do. I didn't think to practice getting the bike going by only using the clutch. She's on a bigger bike than what MSF provides, plus the bike's brand new and she's on camera. That's gotta be nerve-wracking. Yet she handled it really well. She's got someone to rely on and she's in an empty parking lot. New Riders, if you have this opportunity please take it.
@KariPost4 жыл бұрын
The MSF course is basically a crash course. So helpful for learning introductory skills but no substitute for practice and for taking it slow when learning a new bike. I took the course a month ago and felt like I learned a lot, but I just got a bike and rode it for the first time this week and felt like a fish out of water. So nervous, not comfortable, not confident. My husband has been encouraging me to do short jaunts around our quiet neighborhood (just a few laps, maybe 15 minutes of riding, at a time). I've only done it a couple times but it's already helping my confidence and making me feel a lot more comfortable on the bike. I felt fried after two full back to back riding days at the MSF course, and I know I learn better by building skills slowly, over time, in short spurts so I feel fresh and not totally strung out by the end. I feel like MSF should offer shorter "refresher" classes, where you do 2 hours of riding lessons a week over the course of several weeks and then can practice in between if you have access to a bike. A lot of people would likely learn better that way!

My GF took the MSC and missed one question on the written and got a 100% on her driving last month giving her the WA. State MC Endorsement. She rode a few dirt bikes when she was young and she owns a Yamaha two wheel drive sport quad which needs clutch and throttle operation skills. She had experience with all the controls before I asked if she would be interested in riding my 2018 Ninja 400 which is a perfect bike for her. I have been street riding for 43 years and have owned 6 motorcycles and currently ride a 2015 Honda VFR800 as well I have never had a crash... knock on wood!! I also have been riding Utility Quads for work and Sport Quads for fun at the dunes for the last 29 years. So... our first ride together with Babe, we hit our small town of 12,000 people and concentrated on lane positions while riding two bikes, stop lights, stop signs, etc. Ride two was the farm roads where we hit 50 mph and some curves. We advanced on through the seat time rides 4 more times hitting a bigger city and dealing with traffic, until last night when I took her out on Interstate 5 and reaching her fastest speeds of 70 mph( she said she was surprised to look at the Speedo and see 83 mph while closing our rider gap. She was nervous but she has done excellent so for aging skills and confidence each ride as I keep throwing new stuff at her. Target fixation and intersections were topic number one as this is where MC Riders usually have the large majority of accidents. Funny, I got text the other day about a deal on Perrelli tires lol! We both ride with full gear all the time! We watched your video together and we laughed because we use the word Babe as much as you guys do ha ha! Cheers!!

Ahhhh, what a great memory jogger! I remember how whatever little confidence I had after my MSF class completely changed once I got my own bike! From a 250cc at the course to my 948cc Yamaha Bolt, that power/weight difference was huge (especially back then), AND like she said, because it was MY bike there was a different anxiety level added. Buuut what I do remember most was: How freakin' happy/excited I was whenever a level of comfort progressed leading to a level of anxiety dissapating! (Then having to catch myself to understand that while that was happening, I HAD to consciously increase my vigilance in calming myself so I would stay safe and not get ahead of myself). This is all a testament to how challenging the body and mind is an awesome exercise on a motorcycle. Great job being supportive and encouraging Dan and great job Nikki, you are on your way!

I'm glad I found this video. I'm interested in learning and taking the course next weekend so I can ride with the husband. This is the bike I"m interested in and I"m shorter so I loved seeing this.

my first riding lesson was with the instructor on the passenger seat who made me do full circle turns, going up a ramp from a stop etc. etc. I prefer your way of teaching how to ride from scratch.

I can relate to her so much! It's so scary getting the feel for the bike you feel like its just gonna take off from you or like speed out of control. I just did my motorcycle course and have to go back to redo my highspeed test (which is why I'm here haha I'm watching a bunch of your videos to educate myself so i can hopefully pass next sunday!) I love your videos they are so helpful!

Thanks for sharing this evolution. The bike looks great and I totally get the apprehension in going from the 250 to 500. I went 250 to 883 and I learned the hard way that was probably too much, but whats done is done and I miss riding so much. I think the Rebel is going to be the next bike. Universe said no to the Harley for now - so a smaller bike and this one looks great. Good luck Nikki - you got this, you have a great mentor. If anyone wants to buy a sailboat? Let me know. :) Soon as boat sells I get back on a bike.

Just found your channel. Glad I did. I'm also a "new" rider although I'm a guy in my early 70's. For financial reasons I had to sell my Yamaha 750 about 25 years ago and just got the itch again. This is a great reminder of all the things that I had forgotten. Good instruction and a reason for doing things. Thanks for your time.

Dude, that was a great lesson, she did really well. Your patience kept her calm & nice to see her not get frustrated or try to do too much as we see in so many vids.

Wow those are some fine lessons... I learned to drive in this order: -buy a broken bike -learn to repair said bike -I got on the bike started it put it into gear and drove off... Now a friend was on a bike next to me and bout half an hour later of driving in the woods he asked me: u are using the clutch ya? And I went the what? Next thing my other friend was yelling at me what did I do to the transmission. So one thing... choose carefully who are you learning to drive with

The MSF course was very informative. I rode while in the service in 1980. Just bought a Sportster Iron 883 and decided to take the course offered by Harley Davidson. Had a great time during course.
@robertherrick67035 жыл бұрын
That's cool. I think HD offers a variant of the MSF course. The classroom setting for the MSF course was right next door to a Harley Davidson dealership. How long was it since you rode in the service and started riding again?
@chingona1965 Жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I needed. I took the MSF course 6 months ago and was still too scared to ride because I also fell during the course. Thanks for this! It helps me to see another girl on a big bike who is also nervous like me.

Congratz on the new bike. I took a 15 year break after riding for some 20 years, and even I had to start learning it all over again just to be safe. AND, being safe is the name of the game. Practice regularly, challenge your training and when ready remember to NEVER trust those vehicles with 4 or more wheels around you... given half a chance, they will tard up on you at the minimum, cause you to lay some brake rubber and get your heart a thump'N !! Have fun with the thrill and freedom that a motorcycle gives.

Brand new rider here! I did a version of this exercise when I got the bike. Now I am pretty good at launching from a stop. I live on a private dirt road and I have not ridden on pavement yet. I have a Vulcan S and I tended to spin the rear wheel on the dirt road. Now I am much smoother. I can't pull the front brake without twisting the throttle! Very frustrating.

Watching her learn to ride is as exciting as when I first started learning!
