India is witnessing a rapidly changing food landscape in the context of lifestyle changes, food habits and scientific findings. New estimates show that 56.4% of the total disease burden in the country is due to unhealthy diets. Food systems are also responsible for one-third of greenhouse gas emissions.
Thus, sustainable eating helps address the problems with our food systems, by consuming foods that are produced in an economically, socially, and environmentally responsible manner.
Set against this, the Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) has issued 17 dietary guidelines to meet the requirements of essential nutrients and prevent non-communicable diseases like obesity and diabetes. The guidelines also advocate for healthy eating habits and lifestyles, and avoiding ultra processed and packaged food. These comprehensive recommendations were created by a diverse team of specialists under the guidance of Dr. Hemalatha R, the Director of ICMR-NIN.
So, what does an ideal diet look like? According to the ICMR’s diet booklet, Indians should derive macronutrients and micronutrients from at least eight food groups for their daily meals. It recommended vegetables, fruits, roots, and tubers to compose about half of the daily food intake with the remaining portion consisting of cereals, millets, pulses, flesh foods, eggs, nuts, oil seeds, and milk or curd. Similarly, vegetarians should eat foods like flax seeds, chia seeds, etc., as there is a challenge for them to get enough B12 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
According to ICMR, the World Health Organization is considering revising its recommendation and reducing calories from sugar to less than five percent kilocalories a day. Hemalatha R told Down to Earth (DTE) that if you consume sugar, at least try to restrict it to around 30 grams a day. She said that sugar should be avoided, as much as possible, especially for children younger than two. If consumed long-term, ICMR-NIN authors said that sugar substitutes such as sweetening agents like aspartame, and saccharin, can lead to obesity, diabetes, hypertension and other non-communicable diseases.
The scientists who drew up the dietary guidelines also advised against consuming high quantities of protein, especially in the form of protein supplement powders due to various risks like kidney damage, dehydration, and nutrient imbalances. According to Hemalatha R, the guidelines would “facilitate the attainment of the goals stated in the National Nutrition Policy and the guidelines are consistent with the goals set in the National Policies on Agriculture and Health.”
Down to Earth is Science and Environment fortnightly published by the Society for Environmental Communication, New Delhi. We publish news and analysis on issues that deal with sustainable development, which we scan through the eyes of science and environment.

In Andhra Pradesh , liquor prices are raised because people will consume less and alcohol is bad for health. Similarly we ask shops to raise cost of fried items compared to cooked items or raw item which are naturally eatable. So that people who want to eat fried foods which are bad for health can be reduced and also this will help hotels and street vendors to use good oil as the rates are high for fried items. It is a win -win situations for both.

I was in Vizag last month and I saw a huge crowd gathered at some shop as early as 7 in the morning. It turned out to be a liquor shop. I don’t think it’s making much of a difference. Alcohol Addicts will find a way to imbibe no matter the price. Now food wise, again, why would street food hawkers jeopardise their own businesses? It’s with regulatory bodies who can actually spend on awareness on food habits like they do for election campaigning. You see a lot many people following Dr Pal and kids now aware of what gut health means. That’s some impact. I eat spinach today because of Popeye.

Guideline 6 specifically says to eat plenty of vegetables and legumes. But nowhere else does it specifically say to eat meat products or organ meats. Why? If someone is making a guideline I say make it properly. You can eat all the vegetables and legumes you want , but they are not going to come close to the nutritional value of meat.

Dietary guidelines are fine but who is supervising the suppliers and producers of all these so called 'healthy, organic' products that we buy? Nobody is talking about the sub-par quality of produce, adulteration, pesticides contamination etc. How do we stay healthy when its getting increasingly costly to afford even the most basic foods?

It is not enough just to make one UTube Video to get the message of the importance of good nutrition to every Indian across the country. You need to get this video translated and telecast into every Indian language and broadcast in every state, city, town, and village giving Presentations On Good Nurtrition starting in every Indian school and village from the North to the South. Looking at how most of rural India eats - it is a huge thali sized plate piled high with boiled white rice, a large pouring of dhal or cooked pulse curry over the rice, a teaspoon of pickle with a bare 1 tablespoon of overcooked oily vegetable, from which all nutrients have been over cooked out. The goal of most of rural India is to fill the stomach not to eat for health. A full stomach equals a happy stomach for most Indians, resulting in India becoming the heart attack and diabetese capital of the world. You have to demonstrate in each of your Presentstions the daily portion size for each meal of each of the food groups necessary to sustain optimal health on A 9 Inch Plate - not based on the 'full stomach' feeling currently practiced in India. Also known at the 'Pot Belly' capital of the world by the way. Most Indians have protruding pot bellies an alarm bell for non alcoholic fatty liver, due to the over consumption of carbohydrates, starches and sugar. Secondly it is very important to insist with the Indian Government that it is its duty to protect the health of its citizens by stringently monitoring the Indian food manufacturing industry to not add cancer causing agents in our spice powders, to not cheat on the quality of manufactured food products by overloading them with sugar as the main ingredient or chemicals and preservatives and to not use the ubiquitous refined palmoline and hydrogenated oils in foods which Indians consume and are manufactured in India. The Indian Government is absolutely lax about the health of the Indian population, for which they could not care less, never regularly inspecting restaurants, food stalls; road side eateries for food quality and over fried and over used oil since every fast food in India is mostly deep fried, samosas, vadas, bondas, not realizing that a strong growing healthy population can take care of themselves whereas an unhealthy long term sick population overburdens the country's medical facilities, unlike other countries, even Asian countries who consider the health of their citizens their top priority. Even the Middle East countries are very careful about the food they import and manufacture and make sure it is the best quality for their citizens and all imported food undergoes stringent testing. The health of their people is precious to them. That is the difference between India and other countries. When the health and well being of every Indian will be the Indian Government's top priority then everything will be done right by the Indian Government to ensure the health and wellbeing of every Indian and Indians will not be malnourished, ignorant and uninformed about good nutrition but instead well informed on nutrition and taught and know how to eat and how make good food choices.

the problem in India is people would shift to jaggery and say it's "healthier" no it's not, it's the same thing, yes it might contain iron if it's desi, but it's purely sucrose! the biggest problem India faces is this duality of not understanding the component but the "whole", foreign substances can be tricky to introduce and false "believes" (like papaya being an abortifacient) can't be removed. kids should be taught about healthy food but who will do that? the middle class parents who are busy during the whole day and think they deserve a beer and a burger, or the mobile that would send a notification that pizza Hut is 20% off this eve.

Sugar kam? Eh? We shld study Bengali health for the last 100 years at least - if rosogolla and sandesh and mishti doi have caused abnormal diabetes figures there... I know of the Bengali complaint about acidity/ombol/অম্বল ...but anti-sweets reaction/movement, not heard in politically active Bengal...but who knows. Rahi baat those never-heard-of greens, it is hard enough to get good local fruits n veggies...fruits are a disaster..even in north India...fālsé/फालसे - how long are they available?!! and now ragi-everything...let us just stick to Food, as Michael Pollan defined it ("something your grandmother would recognize")... Also, any class-wise analysis of diets and consumption? Because the BIMARU states still have very high child malnutrition...
