An OM-1 Mark II in a smaller body is seriously good news for street and travel photographers. I can't wait to buy one. The CEO's emai also indicated other useful information about their direction: "As we look to the future of the camera business; we will provide more options for compact, lightweight, splash & dust-proof products to expand photographic horizons for our customers." My take on that is that the OM-10 / Pen model(s), plus new Tough cameras, are going to be delivered. The other good news in the email is that OM System is profitable, and their profits are growing, which is welcome news for the future of OM and MFT.

Yes, the market for retro style is popular and there is an illustrious Olympus line of compacts to draw on, and certainly Nikon and Fuji see this market. Overall the explosive growth in the ramping up of digital 2005 on has abated, and "good enough" phone-cams impacted the market. Minolta went, and the market may not be big enough to support the range of players forcing more mergers (this is already happening to the car industry big time). To really grow the real market is China and SE Asia where disposable income is increasing.

I do agree that a PEN-F II type design, and an under US $1,000 PEN body are also needed, but OMS needs to move deliberately as they build their product line and volume, and this OM-3 sounds like a very exciting next step!

Things I want for MFT: 1. Faster lenses: remember those crazy f/2 zooms back in the four thirds system? Imagine what improvements could be made today. 2. More pancakes: it's been brought to my attention that there aren't that many pancake lenses which is puzzling, there's the Lumix 20mm 1.7, the Olympus 14-42mm EZ, the Lumix 12-32mm and the Lumix 12-42 power zoom, and those are all the lenses I recall. I just think, if Viltrox could make a tiny pancake for full frame then what the hell are we waiting for!? 3. PEN and E-M10 series back: olympus has pushed itself more towards the prosumer and pro market and that doesn't seem right to me. I think they could have an opportunity targetting smartphone users. 4. New sensors: personally, I'd love a modern 16MP image sensor for better lowlight performance instead of the old sensors we've been getting for years. 5. Better connectivity: no more USB micro, we need USB C and better wireless connectivity with other devices, kinda ridiculous the amount of technology we have nowadays and we still have to take out an SD card and plug it into a computer. 6. I want old Olympus back!: they used to be a lot more innovative and bold with their products and they were always pushing boundaries, that hasn't been the case lately, which is sad because I think it's just what the company needs.

I'd like to see a matching, fast 18mm F1.7 to F2, for this new, digital OM-3, if it would really come. Also, consider a black body. Of course, both should come with WR - weather resistance (sealing). I've just lost an old Tamron lens 16 days ago, because within the 5th to 18th jan. this year, it developed glass fungus on one of the internal lens elements, because it wasn't being weather sealed, and due the extreme rare winter mood here into my state and cities, i've had taken the chance to take pictures for >4h into snowfall...but now the lens is toast, sad..but true.

I shot OM2n & OM4 when I was a teenager, they helped me get into photography. I have a soft spot for the old OM single digit film cameras, to such a degree that I have an OM film system collection, including an OM3 & OM3Ti, and most if not all of the others….& most of the prime lenses too. A true digital OM3 would be super interesting, but, I don’t think you can just repackage their existing models into a retro body and stick an OM3 badge on it and expect success. The huge thing about the OM3 & 4 was its metering system, I think something like it would need to be replicated in a new model, but even that may not be sufficient. For me, I’d want it to be a FF sensor too, and there is no way that’s going to happen.

The E-M10 is quite small. There is a limit to how small a camera can be and still be practical to use. And while a vintage slr might seem large, consider that they were still smaller than the original sony A7. The real benefit is with the lenses. Sony A7 and the rest struggle here, unless you opt for a slow 35mm lens your setup gets to be about as bulky as your average DSLR.

A body had to be big enough to hold and provide space for controls and buttons. Apparently you don't shoot with longer lenses, but I do, and an E-M1 or OM-1 body, often with the battery grip, is essential for bigger lenses. But, small bodies are best for small lenses, so both sizes are needed.

I think one of the problems that isnt being acknowledged is that with modern Full Frame high ISO performance being so good, you can choose a smaller, lighter f2.8 or f4 lens and come away with the same low light performance and more bokeh. If MFT really wants to compete, everything need to go down a stop 1.7s and 1.8s need to be 1.4s, 1.4s and 1.2s need to be f1s. The 2.8 zooms need to be f2. The leica 12-60 should be 2.8 the whole way through minimum. 10 bit video and log must be available on all new cameras. Squeeze an APSC sensor into the MFT bodies-crazy, i know but potentially compelling.
@stevenjohnson971415 күн бұрын
In your argument you seem to be suggesting that a FF 50mm f2.8 would generate shallower depth of field than a MFT 25mm f1.8 both shot wide open when in reality they would be about the same, only the MFT camera would be smaller and shot at lower ISO which negates some of the noise issues at high ISO. You also mention new sensor technology on FF cameras…. That same technology trickles down to MTF as well with stacked and BSI sensors etc. further reducing the noise differences. Fuji X-T5 is more pixel dense than a 20mp MFT sensor btw. Also on the size issue. You seem to want ultra fast zooms…. Take a look at the Leica f1.7 zooms. They are huge, no thanks!!! This is a limitation of physics. Both systems have their pros and cons that when used properly can both produce great images. If MFT really wants to compete, people really need to stop applying crop factors especially to aperture and learn the true differences between each system, as well as their pros, cons, and limitations, and how to apply it. Personally I love that I can shoot an MFT lens wide open with either a faster shutter speed, or lower ISO and have more than just an eyeball in focus while still being able to have subject to background separation that is pleasing.
@endah0815 күн бұрын
@ I’m not discussing what I want just some of the issues with the appeal of MFT to other users. Indeed a 50 2.8 will be almost a full stop shallower than a 25 1.8. Do I care? No, do other people care? Yes. Furthermore, any loss in light gathering is basically completely made up for with the incredible high ISO performance of FF sensors today. S5ii at 4000 ISO is clean as a whistle. That tech hasn’t trickled down though, there’s still no MFT cameras with dual native ISOs and rolling shutter performance isn’t far better the way it used to be. Not to mention, none of it has made its way to budget or mid range MFT because they don’t seem to exist anymore. The OM-5 was the closest and it’s quite expensive while offering very little over its predecessor. I say this all as an MFT shooter who is rooting for the system, I love it. They can definitely make fast zooms that aren’t quite a big as the Leicas but yes they willl be pretty big. However, look at the Samyang 35-130 f1.8 or the Sigma 28-70 f2. These are huge but they’re covering a sensor 4x larger than an MFT sensor. It’s absolutely possible to make something between say the Leica 12-60 and the 10-25 that has an f2 or f1.8 aperture with a 12-35 zoom range.

@@stevenjohnson9714 So true and well said! I find it beyond ironic that at the same time as the Great Film Revival when "high ISO" is 800 or 1600, some people are obsessed with shooing digital at ISO 20,000 and above. ALL digital cameras have noise at "high ISOs" - some just more than others - and all of them will need post processing like with DxO PureRAW 4 that just eliminates noise for all practical purposes. Current technology can fix noise, but physics says MFT cameras can always have lenses half the size of FF.

@@endah08 I'm also an MFT and OMS shooter and am rooting for the system, and I can't tell you the last time I needed to shoot at ISO 4000 or above. I will suggest that you may be giving too much credibility to the negatives about the MFT system thrown around by it's critics without countering with all it's advantages: size, weight, price, and one of the largest selection of pro-grade lenses of any system. If you need to shoot at midnight in a coal mine, the get an S5ii - really, that would be the better tool. But would you really want to have to carry it and it's 2x lenses around all the rest of the time for little to no advantage? There is always a tradeoff in technology and unfortunately for the FF folks, their platform will never be able to scale down to the compact size of MFT, and they will miss some once-in-a-lifetime shots because on a given day their gear was just too big and heavy to pack along. 🙂
@stevenjohnson971415 күн бұрын
@@endah08with your reply I can see that one, I misunderstood you, and two, we are both rooting for the system, but from different ends. I come from the keep it small camp. I’m loving my PEN-F’s and the small primes for example. With that said I do also still shoot with Fuji for their fast primes mainly since OM doesn’t have anything to compare with the xf18mm f1.4 which is a favorite of mine, so from that end I can see what you’re saying about faster lenses, I just personally don’t feel a need or desire for the system to get larger in physical size than where it’s at now. If they can make lenses faster without a hit to size, IQ, CA etc. that would be welcome. I still believe that most MFT users are here for the smaller nature of the system, and that is my main reason why I still can’t fully agree with you about faster lenses saving MFT. I think they are on to something good with the potential update of the small primes with weather sealing, fingers crossed this new camera is something truly compelling such as a PEN-F update with weather sealing and the stacked sensor from the OM1 at minimum. There is a massive desire for small discrete, retro, travel, street, and lifestyle photography type cameras, that would bring more people to the system than fast apertures would bring. Most of those bokeh shooters, and IQ pixel peepers will still shoot FF and MF etc. which honestly is one of a few reasons I keep my X-T5 and the fast primes. Lastly to save MFT and OM they really need to market themselves better esp. to street/travel photographers along side being more innovative with their technology. Other companies are catching on to IBIS and computational imagery pretty quickly.

They have their own small primes running off their own production lines. They have everything they need to upgrade what they already make. They do not need to use the Aizu (Sigma) plant for this. The reason OM System uses Sigma to make the 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 and the 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 is for the same reason Leica uses Sigma for some of its lenses, Canon uses Tamron for some of its lenes, and Nikon uses Sanyo to make its CoolPix cameras. Compact vintage camera with a pancake 20mm f/1.8 lens and I'm sold.

Yes, the 20mm f1.4 PRO wasn't a pro-quality lens (too much chromatic aberration) and it was too large. I'd love a pancake 20mm f1.7/8 from OM to replace my slow-focus Panasonic 20mm F1.7.

Olympus camera needs : 25mp sensor, pdaf, in camera customizable LUTs, compact simple design, dual/tripple dials, perhaps rangefinder design, focused on wireless transfer and easy social media integration. That is what is required. No need to push limits or going after pros. They are gone. Reach the wide audience. Do what Lumix attempted to do with the S9 but m43 and do it right. 🙂
@trulsdirio15 күн бұрын
The 25mp M43 sensor Lumix uses shows that squeezing more resolution onto a smaller sensor has more drawbacks than improvements for most applications. Dynamic range and noise characteristics are just not good enough compared to the surprisingly good OM1 sensor. I would rather have a great 20mp sensor than an okay 25mp one.
@gregfeeler691015 күн бұрын
@@trulsdirio This is right on! Too many people have missed the tests showing that the 25Mp Lumix sensor does not deliver the DR of the OM-1 stacked sensor, and also has more noise. There is no free lunch with current digital camara sensor technology, that's why the FF companies have sensors from 25Mb to 40 and above - to optimize one performance characteristic for a specific use. If more MP was always better that would all be 40Mp+.

About the only thing I agree with here to get some of the market share is always improving transferring photos. Even though they have the most reliable of the camera makers along no with Leica. It takes about 20 seconds to start transferring your photos and videos you took. Lutz and film simulations have done nothing to help Fuji and Panasonic get more people interested there cameras. People simply just want a compact retro style camera and that’s what helped Fuji with the x100.
@robertmills459114 күн бұрын
@@trulsdirioit also does next to nothing to improve actual image resolution for most users. More pixels is a completely pointless request. Panasonic-Lumix chose to do it to support pro photographers using PL gear that were required to meet arbitary mimimum pixel requirments set by agencies.
@N0ld0r12 күн бұрын
@trulsdirio I would be fine with 20 or 25. There is not much of a difference. I own the OM-5, G9 and G9 mark II and the difference in noise is negligible. I get better results from the G9 mark II but the other two are not far behind and in pure resolution 20 or 25 hardly makes any difference. But to the "mass market" a 25mp is probably required to avoid the complaint of MFT "Still being stuck with 20". I am not claiming that 25mp would be good. I am claiming that it's might be required to reach a wider audience. To most people that number is still important. The more important part is to make a compact, simple and good looking (retro) camera that is easily integrated into social media and with easy to use "live luts" that can challenge "Fuji" film simulations. The mainstream hobby fotographer should be the target and not the studio pro.

Make a Lumix S9 in M43 format, call it an OM 3, beat Panasonic to the punch, point it at content creators, I agree, go out punchy, you've set out your stall with a stable of OM cameras, now start to leave the established box, give M43 the shot in the arm it so badly needs.

I'm thinking it will be an OM-10. OM-3 doesn't make sense and the E-M10 is the only Olympus-badged model lett. Taking inspiration from vintage models might be good but the E-M10 and OM-5 aleady do that anyway so it wouldn't be a huge change.

I really hope they invest in higher resolution cameras. I would. would like to see an Om-1 MK III with 25 megapixels with full AF and 240 frames per second in video mode. prices could also be structurally reduced. I now think that is on the high side. Finally, we may sometimes put higher quality videos on You Tube. This one is sometimes a shame, and does Om-system no good. it's rather embarrassing. Om-system certainly has a future. but they cannot afford to sit on their lazy asses. They should also not offer converted Sigma lenses, but simply have their lenses built by Olympus. so that quality is guaranteed. That will also cost you a little more. You have already forgotten the higher purchase price if the quality is top

43 cameras are too big. Players need 43 cameras as big as GM1 and GM5. At the same time, the CMOS pixels of 43 cameras are too low. Give up cooperation with Sony and make 200 million pixel 43 frame CMOS. The image quality is close to 40 million pixel full frame CMOS. 43 will survive well.

Stop pretending everyone wants to shoot videos of themselves and at least make a tilt screen version of any new OM camera. Personally an upgraded E-M1.1 size body with new sensor & processor, and CMOS viewfinder that keeps the tilt screen and good weather sealing would be great. Affordable weather sealed prime lenses would be great. Not everyone wants to pay for f1.2 when f1.7 is plenty good enough. I use my 14-150 II and old E-M1 the most because of the weather sealing since it drizzles a lot where I live and the "pro" lenses are simply not worth their price to me.

I wonder if this new vintage digital OM-3 it’s going to be full frame with new floor frame prices, before Olympus dismantled the camera division they were rumours of them, developing full frame prime lenses for digital cameras, if such a thing happens, it would be big news. More than likely, such a lens I would think more likely be L mount lens, sounds like OM systems has joined the L mount alliance, could be very wrong, but I am very suspicious,Such a possibility.

The disadvantages of MFT already outweigh the advantages. The smaller the sensor, the better for telephoto shooting, but the number of pixels and ISO sensitivity will not increase. When processing JPEG images, they must be corrected to increase contrast. Additionally, the narrow dynamic range results in smartphone-like photos without uneven colors or shadows.
