Pico going to be around for a long time. What are your thoughts as a Meta competitor? Anime references whenever possible each video

It's not the competitor I want, pico neo 2 is owned by a company who is similarly privacy-invading to meta. It's not really gonna be much different I think, I just want a normal company who doesn't want to steal all your data to compete with meta.

Tracking, Software and Support - those 3 Pillars are not working very well, or are not available with the Pico Neo in Europe and even if the hardware might be the same/sameish - they can't compete with the Quest right now. Hopefully someone else can take over and i look at Sony. But then again - the PSVR2 will not be wireless and probably not compatible as PC Headset(AFAIK). As much as i despise Meta....they still have the best support infrastructure and still keep their walled garden tightly closed. You won't be able to play Resident Evil 4 and others. At least not by official means.

I'm 100% PCVR thanks to games like Cyberpunk2077, No Mans Sky and Skyrim. I don't care for native VR games that run on the headset as it doesn't have the needed power. With that said, leaving the Metaverse will make it worth it, as long as there's no compulsory login shenanigans. Somewhat concerned about it being produced in China, not xenophobic but Chinese companies relationship with their government should give everyone pause.

I think there are a lot of different viewpoints to consider: now VS near and far future, meta (western mega-corporation, controlled by a self-conscious illusionist ) VS bytedance (chinese government-controlled mega-corporation), active community VS ?.... in my case - early quest 2 adopter with ultra-hard stick drift left, mostly pcvr, with a healthy quest library) - i rather get another quest 2 and wait for a bigger leap than bet on an unknown horse. brand new user just interested in gaming, go for byte dance. interested in social stuff going forward and not afraid of selling your soul, quest. ah i dont know.

The pico is a pcvr headset with mobile abilities. The quest 2 is a mobile headset with pcvr abilities. I have a pc so it’s pico for me

Was a simple choice for me, I have valve index and a high spec pc but wanted mobile vr to use with my gaming laptop wired the direct dvi link is fantastic, I don't and would never have a Facebook/meta account, only had the pico for 1 day but first impressions are very good

I like that Pico has DP connection which avoids compression and latency from Quest 2. Unfortunately it’s a bit too late for Pico, they could release it a year ago, for EU and NA that would make a difference.

If I end up getting one, I'm aiming to use it the same way as I do my Quest 1 now, except it'll be better for the use case; Even if you think of Metaculus and Bico Doc as equals in terms of privacy intrusion, the Neo 3 Link has a massive PCVR adventage: direct display connection capability on the USB-C port. Not only that, but it *comes with the cable to do it, and the cable has a screw terminal to hard mount it.*

You don't need a tik tok account to use the pico, you do need a FB accounts to even use the quest on PC. That's one big pro over the quest, 2nd being the DP link(secured with a screw, good design), 3rd it just looks more comfortable without having to figure out a aftermarket strap/weights situation. I think it will do fine even in the states, my sister's kids want quests but she don't want them on Facebook(for good reason imo), she would buy them this probably.

It is an pico android to meta's iphone. same hardware (with edge over to pico for the display port and the rear battery) and open source software vs slightly more aged form of the meta side but less wild west and messy software. And for the companies standpoint It depends on why you don't like the meta side, both will steal and sell your data and sell it the same but currently bytedance will not brick your headset because they disagree with you irl

Pico allows u to use the neo 3 without any kind of account at all as a PCVR headset as long as u plug it to pc with the direct dp cable, I doubt meta will ever consider doing that :/

A great way to piggyback on the Quest software library is to launch something with the same OS, processor, display specs, etc.

I'm not a VR developer but you'll probably have problems with Oculus's proprietary SDKs and APIs - pieces of software that are being used for other software development/functionality

@@andrey2001v for things like hand tracking perhaps but Oculus dropped their proprietary APIs in favor of OpenXR a while ago. Just getting a Quest app to run on a Neo is probably less than an afternoon worth of effort in most cases. Much older titles that were built on the proprietary stuff is likely a bigger issue.

I’m very interested in this headset, but my reasoning is very niche. For driving and flight sims, the DP cable is very attractive for us to buy it, due to link compression being really awful for sim games. Other than that I don’t see why anyone would move from quest to this. I love my quest 2 for normal games and airlink, but the only reason I’ll be buying a pico is for the DP connectivity for my sim games. The only other people I see moving over are link cable owners who really hate link compression and want DP connectivity. Hopefully this inspires oculus to make the quest 3 DP compatible in the same clever way pico have implemented it?

With all the similarities in specs and the similarities of the parent companies questionable practices, the only thing deciding is that Pico is better for PC games because of the DP link, and Quest is better for stand alone because of the huge games library.

Who knows, they could be ready to launch one later this year, and figured this was a good cheap way of getting a lil chunk of mindshare and selling off extra units they've been sitting on. I'm just saying, considering the upcoming Meta hmd launch, gettin that mindshare before it's launch, showing they can be competitive, and maybe ironing some bugs out before the bigger launch later this year, could make some sense. Even if it's borderline, dated hardware, it's still very comparable to the most owned headset in existence. Just my hot take! :-D

They dont require a login at all (only for their store), and you can run it offline, with full side-loading. Huge difference from Meta's offering!

I will still pick Q2, the device should be the same on specs, but the enviroment is totally different... people hate Q2 because of FB background, but on the VR world they are doing extremely well, they sell a product at a good price point, they keep update and improve the headset in regular basis, I had probel with my quest and the customer service was quite good and fast and they have a very good library and store (and now they are even more open on mods and this is quite important imho).... you can hate the company but you can't deny that the quest2 is a great product and it's handle very well.... on similar if not equal spec I will always pick Q2 instead of a "new" company with everything to prove

Another fact about the Pico Neo 3 Link is that Bytedance is obligated by Chinese law to share its user data with the Chinese Government (CCP). So if you're against the Quest 2 because of Facebook, then Pico headsets aren't really for you. =P

Well done and well said. Pico is not a Quest 2 killer, it is too close in comparison and is coming out midway through the life cycle of the Quest 2. It is a viable alternative for anyone who can't or don't want to get a Quest 2. However, even if they eventually sell in the US, it would take a lot to catch up. It is not superior enough on hardware alone. Also not sure if a friend is using the pico and you are using the quest if you can crossplay the same game. I am sure steam games will work but if you are using the pico store and quest store for purchase will it be cross-platform? because if most of the people you know are using quest you will not want to be left out by buying a Pico.

Persoanly. Ill take the Facebook login over being at the Wim of the CCP any day. We have already seen how the CCP likes to try and control western media. Any and all games that go on the Pico Neo have to abide by their standards and the CCP will ultimately set those standards. Though some competition will be nice for Meta. As far as the DP capabilities. I'm fully Wireless now. I have no intention of going back to tethered. Companies should be investing in how to make Wireless better not investing into putting a DP on a standalone HMD.

You can side-load on the Pico, so you have no need to login to their servers to play, unlike the Quest2.

have they defined what "success" means for the beta program? said it before but there are people who are so thirsty/desperate for a meta killer they will, and have in the past, gloss over potential pitfalls of a product while over-inflating everything else in hopes that it will catch fire and do so, and in that they encourage their audience to jump in and get burned. for example right now there is the image quality uber-alles crowd surfacing saying how great it the display port is, and it is, I wish the q2 had it. right now I think what pico/bytedance is doing is a trail balloon and a half-assed one at that for a market that is getting ready to take off and there is already a strong player that has already decided to put all it's effort into. that said I'm still interested in seeing what they do to follow through and what the price will be in a US release.

It doesn't have everyone talking tbh. It seems pointless to re-release a 1.5 year old headset at this moment in time. It's a good deal if you have no other headset, and have a gaming PC, but at the same time that's a fairly small overlap of the venn diagram and isn't really much of a market. What I think is actually interesting here is them establishing a consumer presence outside China and building that infrastructure. Their next headset will be what matters and will build on that. Hopefully something that is properly a step forward, like pancake lense with that vive flow form factor, high res, uOLED ideally etc. The Pico Neo 3 Link itself is basically completely unremarkable but what it could mean for competition in the future is what matters. Although personally, if I had to chose between Tik Tok and Facebook going forward...I'd just choose regular old fashioned reality cause both are absolutely awful and I'm done letting my passion for VR be taken advantage of by awful companies. Give me Pimax, Valve, Arpara, HP etc. I would say HTC but...eh...sleep well, sweet prince. You once had us hopeful.

Sorry to say that, but I don’t understand why people bash meta and at the same time celebrate a Chinese giant company which is clearly doing, what they do all the time: skipping a lot of R&D and copy successful products entirely. Also, do you really want to give away the market leadership to a company that supports the very much criticised Chinese regime? You should keep that in mind when you decide on which product you buy. I won't buy one. I have the Quest2 and think it is ok. Why should I buy a similar headset with a half-baked ecosystem of which you don't know how the support will be? I prefer to wait for the next Meta headset. Maybe the hard part is for the people that don't have a headset, but are interested. Whether their choice is the right one.
