I played RS as a kid from 2007-2011 on and off. Came back to it in around 2015 and played for a good few years. Admittedly I was pretty hooked on the game, but it was the community and friendships I had on this game that had me hooked. Was so fun hopping online and seeing a friends list with tons of people online. These days I just can’t get back into the game, it’s not the same playing alone and having 0 friends online 😢

I come from a time when there was hardly any lore in Runescape, it was a generic fantasy world at most, which focused more on jokes and pop-culture references, coming back 9 years later and seeing that we got 'Ages' now, with the Pantheon being more then just 'Good god' 'Bad God' 'Neutral God'

For some reason this gem of a game is beyond nostalgia for not just me, but most people i've talked too while playing Old School Runescape. Started playing (Old School) as a kid and i'm in my late 20's STILL going back to this gem, every time i went barb fishing or did any skilling and just talking to people close to my age the overall sentiment is always "We never truly quit Runescape" and it's true. I am taking a break right now, however i have the itch to play again, further progress my Ironman account, which too adds another layer of depth and enjoyment as all facets of the world, game mechanics and just overall enjoyability gets heightened as it personally feels more rewarding! Regardless, amazing content as always Mitch and your channel is criminally underrated and you genuinely deserve more subs as your ability to make me want to go back to MMO's in general makes the allure of your amazing content all the more enjoyable!

Excellent video, have subscribed as I'd like to see more from you for both RS and other games! The fully narrated quest story model is definitely one of, if not the best features of RuneScape, and it has some excellent story lines to work through, if you're into that kind of thing - especially the apocalyptic Elder Gods story line which has been several years in the making and only culminated recently. The end game content is really enjoyable too, though it does have a few DPS dummies there are also some very mechanically challenging bosses that have been released recently. Then there's the numerous skills available, most if not all of which have important parts to play in getting to and enjoying the endgame content as well as just by themselves. Even the previously useless Firemaking skill has had some improvements to make it useful with incense sticks being introduced. You can get your food from Fishing and Cooking, your potions from Farming and Herblore, runes from Runecrafting (RuneScape uses an item-based magic system instead of a mana-based one), melee armour from Mining and Smithing, etc. You can also forego the skills and buy most of the products from the skills from other players if you wish to purely focus on combat for most of the game (however, there are some endgame items that are not tradeable so will require you to have the skills to produce them yourself). As noted by you, you're not restricted by your character in which class you want to spec into, you can be a mage, a warrior, an archer - no need for a character for each, just train the relevant skills. The only issue I see with this is that they haven't quite worked out how to push people to play different roles effectively. For the most part in the end game tank gear is useless (better than nothing at all, but you're better off with DPS gear typically two tiers lower than your highest available tier tank gear), with only certain high level tank sets having niche uses (Achto and Cryptbloom (mage only) gear). The vast majority of people opt for DPS roles and gear, with only a handful of bosses requiring a tank role or two and even then they would usually perform that role in DPS gear anyway. There are typically no support roles as the sandbox nature of the RuneScape combat system means DPS and tanks have access to support spells and items so can easily support themselves. Most people's biggest gripe with the game is definitely the sheer amount of micro transactions it has, which have steadily gotten worse over the years. Treasure Hunter is probably the biggest villain because of its gambling nature; but there's also premium currency which are purchasable: bonds (though being tradeable in-game it is often not as harshly criticised as it also means if you play the game right you can do P2P content without paying a penny), treasure hunter keys (for Treasure Hunter, as mentioned previously is basically gambling) and RuneCoins (Can be spent in Solomon's store, not as harsly criticised as there's no gambling element involved and only gets you cosmetics). There are also Loyalty Points which accumulate as you remain a paying member, which can get you auras which can be a powerful addition whether you're skilling or PvMing - typically not criticised as they are seen as a part of the package when paying for membership and cannot be bought outright. Then finally there is also Yak Track, which at the beginning was promised by Jagex to be a replacement for Treasure Hunter, where it didn't have the gambling feature and could be completed by doing the tasks set for each level but also has it's own currency which can be bought to skip these tasks and advance through the levels with IRL money - or bonds, but has since become another micro transaction in addition to the loathed Treasure Hunter it was meant to replace. One other negative for the game is a lack of updating the low to mid PvM scene compounded by the games age; as some time ago its combat system went through a huge rework, turning it from the basic click-and-wait/special attack system it was before to the new complex and engaging combat system it is now. There are a lot of old bosses that were once high level content that have now been power crept to be low/mid level and no new low level bosses have been added that engage with the new combat system. So you don't really get to play with the new combat system in a challenging way until you reach some of the upper mid level bosses (GW2, etc) as the now low level bosses (GWD1, etc) are made too easy by the new combat system and its higher damage output. Another (perhaps) negative for RuneScape is that PvP is pretty much dead. This is not really seen as a problem by the vast majority of players, who are split between being casual players who like to have something laid back to do so they can relax, and people who enjoy high level to endgame PvMing. Most of what was a once huge and thriving PvP community have moved over to the old school version, it's typically seen as the place to go for 'Scapers looking to do some PvP, while it also does have its own high end and endgame PvM offerings too. I'm currently on a bit of a break from the game that has grown up with me for a good 16-18 years of my life, as my preferred way of playing is quests and enjoying all the lore this game has built up over the 2 decades it has been around for, along with some casual PvM and skilling. My break is me waiting for the next big storyline to start rolling into gear, which will take some time - but I will be back. :)

Welcome to the community! It's nice to have a fresh set of eyes on a game I've played for 16 years. Its still funny that the 'newer looking game' is older as RuneScape 3 is a continuation of Runescape 2 (RuneScape 2 accounts carried over to RuneScape 3 when it was updated), and that the 'old version' is newer as Old school RuneScape was made from a RuneScape 2 backup dated in 2007 and released in 2013. It's like wow and wow classic.

Yeah, one correction springs up immediately. The three-tier subscription for premier no longer exists and was done away with mid-2022. Now there is a single Premier level that offers benefits and perks along with a 12-month sub at a discounted price. The 3- and 6-month options are still available but only offer the discounted price for the sub but have no additional perks such as RuneCoins, pets, outfits, auras or anything else.

One tragic thing about RS3 is the lack of real and engaging early game bosses. The late game has lots of bosses that go from simple dps dummies to unique and challenging bosses that scale in difficulty massively and require players to take full advantage of the combat system. Fighting them for their rare drops is one of the biggest parts of the game and it is utterly absent from the early and mid game, meaning new players miss out on a huge portion of the game when deciding whether they enjoy it or not.
@hauddubius3706
@hauddubius3706 Жыл бұрын
So true, the few existing F2P bosses (updated Giant Mole aside, which I believe is F2P?) are old bosses (i.e the King Black Dragon (KBD)), built around the old click-and-wait/special attack combat system. I think they could definitely do with adding a couple more lower to mid level bosses that engage the new combat system. The Arch Glacor (a P2P boss) does a good job of being an easy boss with the mechanics turned off, that can then train you to use the new combat system in a PvM scenario at higher levels as you can turn on the mechanics on one-by-one, eventually working your way to all mechanics on at the same time and then eventually hard-mode, with each increasing difficulty granting you better rates for its higher level drops. I would personally like to see the World (Gielinor) stretched out a bit more, but with all the teleports you have access to I can see it not happening in the near future, if at all. The greater render distance definitely does show how condensed the World is, though, when it allows you to see cities as if they're almost on top of one another.

@Liberals now know Biden was the worse choice the interface is definitely a huge problem as well. The default interfaces are basically useless, which turns new players off the game. They really need to give players a default interface that is based on the style most end game pvmers eventually go to. While the pvm interfaces may seem busy compared to the defaults, the access to information/utility on them is way better since you will generally never have to switch any windows while fighting and they almost always have 3-5 action bars displayed centrally.

Very good video. I'm glad you showcased all the benefits as well as the downsides of the game and its subscription model. We're always welcoming to new players, so if anyone here is curious, the first thing you should probably do is join a clan. There is no question that is too stupid to ask in a clan chat, and usually someone will help you out immediately. You can also access what is arguably the most comprehensive and informative game wiki in existence through chat integration by typing "/wiki [query]" into the chatbox. For example, if I typed in "/wiki raw lobster", a wiki page would open to a backlog of all known information about raw lobsters: their release date, where they can be caught, any graphical updates to them, their value in player-to-player trade, how much XP you'll earn from catching and cooking them, etc.

Wonderful video, and I love the fresh perspective on the game - those seem hard to come by nowadays as far as video reviews are concerned. I would like to add that bonds (the major premium currency) can be traded on the player market, making the game (potentially) completely free to play - just as a side note, it will take a long time most likely to get to that point, but it is absolutely doable.

Great video! RuneScape has been a huge part of my life for most of my life. Been playing it on and off for 20 years or more, and I'm always pulled back (As they say, "You never quit RuneScape, you only take long breaks.") I used to play RS3 because I quite simply was playing the entire lifespan of the game as it grew and that version of the game is where I ended up, but a little while after OldSchool released I gave it a try and I was hooked. I haven't looked back since. I find I prefer the simplicity and lack of noise. it's a truly calming experience, but there's immense depth to be found there as well that to this day I've barely dipped my toes into. Also, extremely worth noting, OldSchool RuneScape has _none_ of the microtransactions that RS3 has. You simply have a monthly membership, and it asks nothing more of you. No funbucks, no tempting you with loot crates, no limited-time cosmetics, OldSchool makes no attempts whatsoever to get you to open your wallet further. And in the aggressively monetized game culture we live in right now, that is extremely refreshing.

I doubt Jagex who make RuneScape would be interested in undisclosed sponsorships. If Jagex got caught breaking laws like that they would get fined a lot of money by authorities, and the ownership at Carlyle Group would fire a lot of people and make sure none of them ever get work in the UK games industry or marketing. It's a decently big video game developer and publisher from Cambridge United Kingdom, not some small Chinese company making weirdly shaped plastic containers.

I recently gave RS3 a try… I honestly have no idea what to do, ever. And when I decide to do Slayer quests, my backpack fills up so quickly and it’s such a slog to march back to town to drop things off… but I also have to sacrifice multiple slots for the food I need on me to heal in case things go wrong. Maybe I’m missing something, but maybe a little more direction in-game would be nice :/

I love Runescape, you never quit you just take a long break right? Lol. I'm on break currently. Admittedly I'm tired of the way they monetize the game :/ sure, I can choose not to purchase like I normally do: But the monetization of the game screws with the economy like crazy and it can be frustrating at times. Anyways; this video was awesome and I'm definitely subbing

I am happy to see a new face trying Runescape out. As someone who has been playing since 2006 I don't really remember what got me hooked on Runescape, so I find it hard to convince other friends to try the game out. I tried with 2 of them but with me being a member since 07, I forgot how many boundaries there were in F2P worlds. It didn't make a good impression when everything that I wanted to show them was behind a paywall.

Brilliant video, however, the high-end of RS3 PVM (Killing bosses in the new Runescape) is as fast-paced as it comes with your Actions per minute reaching obscene levels. RS3 also has many methods that are far more active or click-intensive when training skills that typically offer greater rewards in terms of Gold and Experience, if playing a chill game was not what you had in mind. I find that your choice of how the game experience will be is what makes the game truly unique and worthwhile, the way in which you play is completely up to you as you're not locked to any skill, style, or method. Do give it a try if you're debating on playing!

As a long term player of the game, this was a good video but really only scratches the surface .There is an unbelievable amount of content that has kept me playing for 15 years and there really is content for every type of player. There are chill and relaxing elements, with afk/second monitor being a core identiy of the game, however the high end content scales in difficulty and skill almost indefinitly with high end PVM requiring hundreds of actions per minute and abseloute concentration. For those wondering if RS is for you, my best advice is to try it out, just be prepared for 2 things: 1. If you enjoy it be prepared to sink a lot of hours into the game (my play time is ~15,000 hours and im not even close to a top player). 2. Microtransactions do feature heavily. They are optional and nothing is gated behind them but they will save you a lot of time.

RuneScape always had more interesting questing than most other MMOs, even the ones that weren't free to play. And I'm talking from the actual original Runescape. Before what is called "old-school RuneScape" now. I remember a quest in the OG where you had to sneak into a palace but first you had to gather materials to craft an outfit that would make you look like a princess or something like that. And then the quest where you had to gather materials to make a holy sword in order to kill a big demon in the middle of a stone henge equivalent structure. That was my first ever introduction to MMOs when I was a child. Imagine my disappointment when I finally tried to get into other ones with that as my bar for quests and it's all just "kill 10 tigers and report back".

RS3 is less of an overhaul and more the result of continuous evolution throughout twenty+ years of development and content. Its still one hell of a game, and the quests are out of this world good! Some of them can make you laugh your heart out, others make you cry tears of sadness and sorrow, and some are downright epic in feeling and scale. Yet always with a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to balance out the pathos.

RuneScape was my first ever MMO, wasted thousands of hours on it as a kind. It then became a season thing for me to come back to when I got older. Eventually, I got bored with it and stopped altogether. One thing that bothered me about the game was that we never got the addition of mounts for players to ride. Yes, we got teleportation but mounts in old school MMOs such as this would still have been a nice addition to the game. It is now 2023, I am looking for a new game to explore. I think I'll try my hand in RuneScape again after watch the video. Thank you! Question, how did you get a wolf as a pet?? You didn't cover that
