A PS4 portable (disk-drive-less and battery powered PS4 that's extremely thin - like iPad Pro M4), that runs all PS4 games natively would be huge. I deem it feasible and profitable.

@@SRC267 Especially given Retroid's capable Handhelds are all Android-based this opinion is a bit outdated. These are basically Phones that have the telephone functionality cut-out in the first place to be handhelds instead already. So it could work. I doubt putting this new "Sony Gaming Phone" in the Xperia Line would be a good idea though. This product line is confusing enough as it stands. Ain't I right Xperia Z ii and that you aren't a direct sequel to the Z i because the Z i² exists... Maybe Sony could come out with three SKUs: 1. Shell integrated controls at the side alike all the Retro Handhelds. Could look a bit goofy when used as an actual phone though, the old N-Gage problem. Wouldn't be very comfortable to hold vertically either. Probably more aimed at people that want a dedicated Sony Handheld, not a Hybrid. 2. A more traditional Smartphone design but quite thick as it can be hold sideways and slid up to reveal controls. -> think PSP Go 3. A "normal" Smartphone but it comes with a so and so long free Subscription to Playstation Plus (not stricly required, but very recommended to take your games from one device to the next because phone cloning is still annoying as hell) and a Sony-made telescope controller to attach to the phone. Maybe with dents in the Phone to make sure it sits flush and nice whenever you want to use it.

Emulating the television is definitely an important part of old games. And for a 240p game, it needs at least a 1440p screen in order to draw each individual CRT phosphor. It needs a 2x2 grid of CRT pixels for each game pixel, where each CRT pixel is a 3x3 square with columns for red, green, and blue.

Something I learned recently: 7-zip recent version are creating archives which are not compatible with old 7-zip versions. Yes the file format and the compression algorithms are changing but not the extension… So if you have errors on extraction the first step is to update your 7-zip app before suggesting that the archive is corrupted.

Even if Sony decided to make a PSP 3, I would hold off buying it until modders found an exploit to allow apps such as RetroArch. Having my retro games on portable devices is just something I'm very accustomed to these days. Might be a good idea for Sony to include a dev mode.

Honestly this is so false. It's just SkyUI5, USSEP, and maybe SMIM. Nothing else is required or even recommened imo, if your goal is to play Skyrim. Especially not texture packs, they are all worse than default artistically, except for maybe one that I can't remember, and they are a trillion gigabytes. Follower mods are cringe and wasteful. Armor mods are more understandable, but still you'll waste most of your time looking for balanced well made sets. Graphics mods are entirely unneccessary, even the 2011 version still looks good. I would concede on a combat overhaul, but I haven't really looked into those to know how good they are. Basically, I know it's a joke nine times out of ten, but it just isn't true.

@@Jay34k You are underestimating the power of the brand there. I have an aquaintance that always buys Sony Xperia Phones only to than complain about them. A coworker and me tried to talk him into trying a Samsung A line (my preferred phones) or the coworker's Honor but no he has to buy Sony's Phones even though he is unhappy woth them by now. So there would be droves of people coming to buy the "new PSP" on that promise alone. If this includes an as early "Hello World" exploit I would even jump on the bandwagon as native handheld PS4 would likely require a chip that makes Emulation a breeze.

The amd mobile apus, I believe, are more powerful than a base PS4 so they could just spec a game for the PS4 and it should run on the potential handheld with out too much of an issue, performance wise, of course.

Some form of aggressive upscaling might be used on a lower version of the PS5 games ported for this handheld. At least that's my take on this handheld rumor. Example would be to make a base game but in extreme low resolutions for a game like Horizon Dawn and then the AMD chip upscales it to a reasonable format on a 8 inch oled screen.

If the Sony handheld lets me play my entire PSN-purchased library to date... I'll get it (PS3, PSP, PS1 classics, minis, etc.). It's why I like the Steam deck - I have a library already for it. So if I can play PS3 and before it and stream the rest at least (if not play native ps4) I'm good.

@@Dracossaint I just analyzed the audio in audacity, and it does show 5 points of clipping, but its nowhere near what I am hearing. It sounds like the clipping/distorting happened in the original recording, then it was processed to back it off, but once you lose that data, its gone. I am listening on a good receiver that has good speakers. I do have sensitive ears for this stuff.

I just realized something: Maybe both Microsoft and Sony want in on the Handheld Market again to nudge us towards all-digital? That sounds way less like a scam in the making for Handheld. I only ever carried several games around for the DS and it wasn't great. With the 3DS, Switch and Retroid it's great how many digital games (in case of the Retroid nothing else) are slumbering on these. So maybe they want to exploit this feeling of convenience to make their next home consoles coming with no physical media less of a shock. I still don't understand why Sony is so gung-ho for this all-digital thing. Any used Playstation system since the 3 is a great and very cheap Blu-Ray Player... (My PS4 wouldn't still be hooked up to the TV if it wasn't.) Why give up on the format that you own and pushed so hard against HD-DVD?

Playstation will struggle to make a handheld. What nintendo got right is that they merged their console and handheld, so you were only designing games once and not worrying about ports or dedicated titles targeting lower sales handheld consoles. Steam Deck and the windows handhelds rely on back catalogs of games, or less demanding games, but again do not require custom built games targeting that hardware. A new PSP, Vita, whatever, will struggle to find footing if it is an underpowered PS6 requiring proprietary games unless they intend to either backport their legacy catalog, or do so in such a way that the games "just work". If I had to guess it will function like the Switch in terms of compatibility, where high-end games just get streamed. So indie PS6 games can run on device, but big games stream like they do with current PS5 handheld. That's the only way I can see that working without just being DoA.

The Atari 2600+ and the new 7800+. They are not ancient as they are new with HDMI and they are not extremely high priced. In fact they seem to be pretty affordable. You can also play all the old cartridges on them. I think that's a good experience. Wouldn't you say?

@@valentine_puppy I did. You didn't answer my question. You put "there really is no excuse for not having the real thing". Which one can only infer that you are implying and alluding that people should spend an arm and a leg on ancient hardware and out of print games that are expensive. You saying that you understand the convenience while also saying that "there is no excuse" is also contradictory. If you understand and get it you wouldn't say that there shouldn't be excuse. What about other consoles like the 32X, Atari Jaguar CD, Sega CD, etc and other consoles that aren't easy to find and obtain. Also, the SNES itself has capacitors that are starting to fail. People should get them replaced over the convenience of emulation? There are plenty of excuses why emulation is preferable over hardware. Save states, fast forward (mainly for RPGS) rewind, games working 100% of the time without having to fiddle with an NES when the game isn't working right away, etc. Not to mention rom hack improvements that add quality of life to old games. Plenty of excuses to emulate over original hardware.

@@crystalwater505 I'll say this: inferring can be somewhat of an art form. Sometimes you're correct, but often you're not. In this instance, I'll clarify what I meant instead of leaving it to inference. By "the real thing," I meant that actual hardware, whether original or reproduction like Atari systems, provides the best experience. It's the best way to appreciate how the original game was designed and played. You're right about the quality of life improvements and other benefits. I emulate games too. If I were against emulation, why would I engage in it? So, the notion that I suggested people need to spend a lot of money is incorrect. Not everything is old, expensive, or problematic. New technologies like drive emulation for Dreamcast, Saturn, and PS1 offer solutions. My point is, there's no excuse not to have tried these systems. If you can own them, great. eBay has Genesis models and other consoles at reasonable prices. Emulation is beneficial for game preservation and exploration, but I won't claim it's the superior method, nor that owning or finding a console to play games as originally intended is wrong. I'm simply stating it's the traditional way and likely the best way to experience the games authentically. Many of the problems and issues you mentioned are just aspects of life. Should we emulate everything in life? And what do you think those emulations run on? Hardware. It may not be the original, but it's still hardware. All hardware will eventually encounter issues; it's a universal truth. It boils down to personal choice and what inconveniences one is willing to tolerate. You can find games and consoles at garage sales and thrift stores. If that's not your preference, consider trying some of the new reproduction systems to get as close as possible to the original experience. There is always a place for emulation and I love both of them.

The "real thing" suck ass now,why would i spend 300$ or more to get a garbage Nintendo system when i can play their stuff in my rig with far better performance and even tools that allow me to maximize the game's specs like the resolution and frame rate? if you typed this comment 20 years ago,i would have agreed with you...but today when the PC tech has advance so much while leaving consoles in the dust? nah,i'll never buy another console ever again.
