Before the M4, before the CAR-15, there was the Model 605. Paul Levy introduces us to the Brownells BRN-605™, a detailed replica of this very rare and early (ca. 1965) carbine version of the M16. If it looks like an M16A1 with 4.5" lopped off the barrel ahead of the front sight tower… that's because the Model 605 was! Like the original, the BRN-605™ has a 15.5" barrel capped with the early 3-prong M16 flash hider. Yes, it looks odd. But due to its rifle-length gas system, the semi-auto BRN-605 is pleasantly soft-shooting. Eventually, the more drastically redesigned XM177 carbine, the famous "CAR-15" saw service in Vietnam. But that's another story - and another Brownells Retro™ Rifle.
