Okay so I bought this bike just over a month ago and it is absolutely awesome. I use it as my daily driver for work (I'm a GP) so my bag with essentials goes on the front rack and my kid goes on the back seat when I bring him to daycare. One thing I would like to comment on is the back seat weight capacity. I know it's rated for 65kg but this thing can handle a shit-ton more. I'm Dutch and we carry each other on the back of our bikes all the time, and I've had FAR heavier people on FAR less sturdy back seats.

I absolutely freaking love this bike. This is such a good compromise between a normal bike and a cargo bike. I love the fact that it can carry cargo or people pretty easily and it looks really nice - great looking bike even with the rear carrier. This really looks like a good replacement for the car and I will definitely consider this in a future purchase.

I just got mine from my local e-bike shop, spec’d much like the one featured here. It’s a Multicharger Mixte, with the passenger and cargo kits, the larger front rack, the 14-speed Rohloff drive-train, the high speed motor, and the Nyon display. So far, I’m loving it! My bicycles have been my primary vehicle for awhile now, and this new e-bike feels like it can take over even more of the trips I would still have used a car for. It is just so capable!

Thanks chris for all the great videos and doing what you do! I have been enjoying this bike since October 2022 and 4000km and thought I'd share a detailed account of my experiences in case it is useful for anyone. Multicharger mixte (low frame), enviolo hub, belt drive, passenger kit, kiox 300, gx off road tires, 750Wh. I was looking for an all rounder on/off road, good cargo, good utility and when I saw that this bike could carry a mid weight (65kg) passenger I was sold. Have had quite a few adventures two up with my girlfriend or friends. I'd say this bike pretty much does most everything I want quite well and I love it. It's kind of what I always wanted in my all around bike, but opted for less weight and more efficiency on my analogue bike since I'm the only motor. The extras that are nice on my bike are more bump absorption and off road capabilities with the front suspension and larger tires. The extra passenger is another bonus. Overall I'd say while it is more than I ever wanted to pay, I am getting a ton of use and joy from it. It has had a few problems that seem to be due to poor quality control from when I bought it new - they have not really impeded riding so far and have been fixed under warranty. Generally I'm very happy with it. I hope it can last me at least a good 20-30k km for the price. We'll see. I think there's a little too much detail for a single comment so I'll continue it in a reply. Note this is just for people who really want to read all these details and find them useful. The details: Abilities - it can commute, off road, and haul cargo very well. I'm perfectly comfortable on a forest road at 30-40kph. I wouldn't try throwing it around fast on technical trails or jumps (though I have gotten some air on some downhills without trying), but I certainly don't need to be gentle or slow with it on fire roads. 65kg on the back and 15kg of cargo on the front is more than I'll ever need. Unless I'm towing a passenger or being a passenger, then I try to be mindful of the weight. I imagine it can carry more than it says just fine, but I may try go easier on bumps or curbs with passengers in tow. - Motor: eco makes up for the extra weight and about the same as a normal bike. 100W pedaling on flats keeps me going around 20-23kph. Note that the enviolo (and belt?) are noticeably less efficient than a derailleur setup (for me). Maybe about 5-10%. Hard to say without having an identical bike with swapped drivetrain to compare. Tour mode usually has me at 25kph limit around 90-100W pedaling. Turbo is almost like not having to use any energy except for the steepest of hills. Even got me a my girlfriend up a short ~11˚ grade (thought I just did that once to see if it could). I have had the belt jump (I believe) when pushing way hard up too steep a grade, but they were like like little super steep inclines on the side of a road that could just be avoided. Pedaling with no motor is fine on flats for casual pace. 100W has me going about 18kph on flats. Note the CX motor is pretty loud imo. Much louder than my friend's older Bosch performance line. - Battery and range - In the summer here in souther Germany (15-30˚C, 60-90˚F) On mixed eco and tour modes, I tend to get around 100-140km per charge running the battery down to 10-20%. This generally includes 5-15kg or cargo, flats and moderate hills, decent amount of forest roads. I usually average around 100W of pedaling (human power figure, the motor power would be on top of this), and maybe 200W up some hills on tour mode (~450W total?). Once charge on all tour mode gave me about 1.2km per percent. Note that due how batteries work, I'll usually get maybe 15% more range out of 80-100% charge and about 15% less range out of the 20-0% charge. The range estimator seems to account of this, though it does seem to be on the conservative side by maybe 10-20%. On a few km of all flat it usually estimates eco 160km, tour 100km, sport 85km (now I replaced it with auto 120km), turbo 80km. With mixed riding it usually estimates: eco 130, tour 80, auto 97, turbo 64km. Up and down big hills all day on tour mode may be down to 60km. Winter - riding in the winter with temperature from -10 to 10˚C (14 to 50˚F) seemed to get me around 0.9 to 1km per percent. I do bring the battery in the house when it's close to freezing outside. - Comfort - I didn't like the stock seat or grips too much and replaced them with Ergon grips and a seat I liked. Quite comfy now. For the suspension seat post (cane creek thudbuster), it didn't feel that much more comfy than a rigid post (maybe 10-20%). It could soak up maybe 2-3cm bumps fine, but bigger would send decent shocks to the body. I recently replaced it with a byschulz G.2 ST spring suspension post with 30mm travel and it feels quite a bit more comfortable, maybe 30% more. I would have got the Lt version with 50cm travel, but I wasn't sure it could fit and accommodate the passenger handlebars that mount to the seat post. As good as the bychulz is, it's nothing like a full suspension (FS) bike. Even the cheapest FS bikes I've ridden soak up bumps better than very expansion suspension posts. I may have to decide between the solo joy of an FS bike and great fun of carrying friends for my next bike. - Weight: It is about 40kg 88lbs with my setup - 15kg carrying front rack, bar ends, passenger kit, additional side stand. Not much of an issue while riding, but definitely hard to heft up into trains that have stairs in the entrance. I can barely do it with my average load of 5-8kg of cargo. Going up regular stairs I can use the walk assist to help and it's pretty fine. continued in reply...

continued... •Issues I've had: Brakes squeaks and rubs - the brakes started having persistent but not too loud squeaking from very early on. Nothing like the truck horn squeaking that can happen when brakes are contaminated or something, just low volume, high pictched squeaks at low to medium breaking pressure. Quieter pads (30x 25kph break in) still squeak. I haven't tried any thorough cleaning or sanding yet considering they were squeaking shortly after brand new purchase. Maybe later. Also, brand new or shop adjusted, the brakes do tend to intermittently scrap on the pads, not always but maybe 50% of the time. One person online mentioned that in their experience that magura discs are made fairly thick and leave little clearance and some other brands have thinner ones. Perhaps this is true. - The front disc was a little off from brand new and was getting a scrap on the pad with every rotation. The shop fixed it for free. - At around 2500km the steering tube area started making progressively louder creaking sounds (that got quiet in the rain). The shop replaced the lower steering bearing shell under warranty, but the noise has still returned. A work in progress and hope it is all warrantied and nothing big. I ride in the forest a decent amount, but I don't believe I'm riding in any way that would be unreasonably harsh. With some additional custom mud guards I install, the steering tube stays pretty much totally clean also. - The belt did come off once on a fairly simple 35kph ride down a medium bumpy trail. I rolled it back on, though later I learned this may damage it. A shop tech thought tension was fine, so not sure if it is normal for the belt to come off sometimes or if there is some other issue. • Self repair and other experience: changing the tube - I got a small glass puncture in the front tire early on and tried to change it myself. It felt like there was no way no how to get the smart sam plus tire back on, it had something like maybe 10cm of tight overlap with the rim. The shop changed it and said this is a tire rim combo that is pretty difficult. Perhaps being sure to get the bead in the rim bed could have made the difference. Otherwise tires have lasted very well, at 4000km, the rear has just worn off the little wear marks in the center. - Belt: It seems to still be working fine and I don't see the need to change it yet (unless it's been overly damaged when I rolled it back on before knowing about that). Though I have learned that it is said that belts do need some regular maintenance to last well. Can't just leave it untouched. I'm curious how long they would last with no maintenance (haven't seen any info on the web to answer this). Maybe just a water wash whenever visibly dirty or squeaking/buzzing from dust and checking tension from time to time. One shop tech looking at my belt said he thought it's almost done, but I've had many shop tech tell me many things and plenty of times they have turned out to be incorrect. I plan to keep running it till it obviously needs replacement, so we'll see. 4000km really doesn't seem like much for a belt even though I could take better care of it (and plan to), but I'm not sure how long a derailleur set up would last on my heavy ebike in comparison. My analogue commuter bikes chains would last between 6000-9000km with just some lube, wiping and lubing every few hundred kms and a belt is said to last 3-4x longer than chains. Anybody have any detailed numbers on how long their ebike drivetrains have lasted, under what riding conditions, and what kind of maintenance? - changing front brake: Shop said they should be replaced when they looked at around 2000km. They still had about 1mm of pad on them, so probably another 1000km before the recommended 0.5mm. Seems to take quite some force to fully push in the pistons to get good clearance. They will smoothly move, but need force. It was quite difficult for me to get replacement magura type 9.p pads to both fit even with the wheel off. Their little hooks get in the way. Even magura acknowledged that the type 9 pads are tricky to fit. They said the type 8 pads are much easier [4 separate pads]. Changing the rear brakes is potentially much more of a hassle. You may need to learn how to remove the rear wheel (my first time doing this with an enviolo belt hub). Remove the side mud shield, it has two torx t25 screws on the inside of the wheel area in addition to its velcro. I saw a video of someone changing the pads on the same magura mt4 brakes on a different riese and muller bike and they just removed the fitting screw, pulled them out and easily dropped new pads in without even removing the wheel or brake. I don't know why this seemed impossible on my bike. Magura recommends using the little plastic transport device [wasn't very effective for me] or a flathead screw driver to push the pistons back (though they had the brake off the bike). My super worn pads (less than 0.5mm) barely fit in and out of the brake with the wheel on. Possibly removing one old pad and using a flat screw driver to push one piston side in and then do the same for the other might work, but not sure if that is ok for the disc or not. In any case, removing the wheel or unbolting the brake unit will fairly easily get the job done. I decided for future brake replacement and checking, it makes things much easier to cut a hole in the brake side mud shield big enough to work on the brake with your hands without the need to remove the wheel each time. You could even use the cover of a plastic binder or something to cover the hole when you don't need it. Some little holes with bend electrical wire work great to easily attach and remove it. - enviolo cables cramped - it's fine as sold, but if you add any grips and/or bar ends, it can cramp the mechanical cables and make them harder to shift. - adding an extra rear side stand: I put one on where it fit. Not as sturdy as the center stand, but very easy to use when extra stability isn't needed. So, overall, I love my bike and get tons of use out of it. It does everything I thought it could do very well. There have been little hiccups, but nothing serious for 4000km. Hoping that any manufacturing defects it has can be reasonably remedied under warranty, and hoping it can last me a good many years and 30,000km or more.

Whilst expensive l purchased the previous version (Mixte). However it has replaced my car which ultimately saves me money. It has not missed a beat. Easily carries the weekly shopping for two. I also recommend buying a trailer for those trips to the hardware store. My last trip l bought 5 bags of soil/potting mix and three bags of mulch. Not a issue for this bike! I would also recommend purchasing the R and M panniers. Ideal for putting your shopping in. Chris, have you considered doing an episode on bike trailers?

Yes, trailers please. I have a supercharger and feel a trailer would be really useful for more car replacement. In particular wondering about one wheel or two. Sure for touring one would be best, but for cargo riding is two wheel tolerable? I broke the rear rack recently :( so I think carrying too much on it sometimes. Other than that, the bike handles load so well.

Love!! all your bike reviews Chris, I have watched MANY since my Moustache Lundi was stolen a year ago and I have tried to get a (hopefully better) replacement. I have settled on wanting a Multicharger Mixte (after almost going for the Benno RemiDemi). I realise that a main priority is to still be able to take my daughter on the back even though she's 10, so won't get away with just having her on an ordinary carrier any more. I have the opportunity this week to get a new Mixte - from a bike shop that pre-ordered for the shop floor. It has arrived and I have first option to purchase - there is someone waiting to get it if I don't. It has all the specs I was considering getting (and more) EXCEPT that it has enviolo (Vario HS) gearing, which I am unsure I like. I ENJOY the feeling of changing gears - the click and the change, and I also enjoy riding in a high gear - I don't like spinning away too fast. I'm used to derailleur or would consider Rohloff. With uncertain shipping to this part of the world and summer coming can you (or anyone!) convince me that Vario is a good way to go?? thanks! Have to decide v soon!

Anti-theft question for Riese & Müller bikes. I remove my batteries when parking in a rented detached garage in the rental complex where I live. I also lock it with a Kryptonite floor anchor. Besides that I also have an insurance policy which basically treats the bike like a motorcycle. I wouldn’t mind for the bike to be stolen so I could buy the latest model actually. Anyway that’s besides the point. What I wonder is if Riese & Müller / Bosch would consider some form of drivetrain lock like Stromer bikes have. Something which makes it impossible to pedal the bike - with or without battery installed when a lock mode is selected (via remote app like Stromer would be ideal but not necessary). I notice my RM Supercharger is extremely easy to pedal without batteries and/or with the Bosch system turned off. I don’t mind that RM doesn’t offer GPS tracking like Stromer and others do, but a built in drivetrain locking feature would seem very useful. I know you can always lift the bike into a pickup truck etc, but it seems in the majority of theft cases, the bike is ridden away and preventing this would seem like a good idea. Maybe I should write RM in Germany and tell them to work with Bosch to make such a feature available? Or maybe Chris at Propel could do it since he holds the clout haha… Comments welcome.

@San Andreas I have the KIOX on my bike and always remove it when the bike is not in use. I haven’t come across that feature. I’ll have to dig deeper unless you want to tell me where in the menu system it’s found and whether it is still active once the KIOX is removed. Thanks

I checked it out. Bosch IOS eBike Connect app, my eBike: there are no such options. Only 1) info about the specific KIOX unit 2) info about the specific bike including battery serial numbers etc. I don’t see anything about a lock feature. Will keep checking.

Definitely on my list. All of the upgrades are just too tempting. I've been using a "lesser" Electric Cargo Bike for about three years now and have a good idea of what I need and why and this bike ticks off all the boxes. I'd primarily like to extend my range and speed so I can move beyond the twenty to thirty mile round trips that I'm currently limited to. I live in a hilly area and its not unusual for a twenty mile trip to have 1-1.5k of climbing in it.

They aren’t distributed in the US, but you can buy them online in Europe. It’s called the Ergotec M99

The mirrors are mandatory in many EU countries if you have the speed drivetrain, as well as a speed-pedelec rated bike helmet.

Hey Chris, great video as always. What are your thoughts on panniers and a child seat on the multicharger? I need to carry my son, his kindergarten bag (probably on the cargo rack) but also my work bag and clothes which I usually had in some ortlieb front rollers on my previous ebike about 15km each way to commute.

When I carry my 35 kg child on the back (using the Passenger Kit), and lightly loaded cargo panniers, I find it helpful to put my 5 kg of locks in a small Ortlieb accessory bag, strapped to the front rack. This improves the loaded steering feel when the ground is a little slippery and/or we are going uphill.

@@tomwoodley2479 Not with the Multicharger… However, five years ago, we used to have a non-electric, hybrid bike, with a rear rack-mounted Topeak Babyseat II. That was OK, but it took more effort from me to shift my weight forward and “hold down” the front wheel, as well as balance the bike and crank the pedals. Anyway, the old, non-electric solution only worked for around eight months, because my small person grew so fast!

@@kolaajibade8846 Thanks again, I was emailing with my LBS yesterday and because we are in lockdown, they got one of the mechanics who is my size out to show me what the demo bike would look like after they put the safety rails, ortlieb panniers and child seat on. They really went above and beyond but they ended up getting the sale! I was blown away by the value for money on this R&M vs the equivalent S00 Tern GSD. I thought the R&M would be significantly more expensive for the spec.

Right now, I’m currently debating between those exact 2 bikes, so I would absolutely love to get your feedback on why you went with the RM? Any advice would be so appreciated!

I have issues with hauling my kids bike on the multicharger. The mount and single strap that comes with it allows the fork to move. That then allows the bike to bounce and slide out which then creates a scenario where you are literally dragging the bike. Pretty dangerous. Sure you can use a couple more straps, but why did they design the feature so poorly? Even with the quick release lever on the bottom of the floor board, the frame of the floor board slides forward and backward in bike carrier mode because your relying on that quick release lever underneath it and a Velcro strap. Can you do a how to for this feature? It isn’t anywhere online and even riese and muller doesn’t have any directions other than vague install instructions that came with the parts. Thanks.

can you put regular chain to enviolo system? i know carbon belt jadajada jaa but regular chain with just one gear so the chain is always straight and costs 8 euros to buy new if needed is in my eyes so much more practical than hoping belt lasting and not need to drop 100 euros and wait for 2 week to it arrive if it does fail

Great review, easy to listen to, and well explained. If I lived in the US I'd buy from Chris! Love the multi-charger, I plan on buying one soon through my employer's "cycle to work scheme". I know you get "what you pay for" but it is still overpriced and expensive! (&increasing at the rate of knots). For the model being reviewed with all of of the add-ons as shown above it's 6-8 THOUSAND POUNDS!

I was hoping to test ride the bike R&M sent to a local dealer. I am 5'10" and, sadly, the bike sent is meant for people over 6'. But I love the look of this bike and the functionality it looks to provide.

I've watched your videos so many times, dreaming of the day I would get one of these bikes ! I got the multicharger 2019 version! However, I hadn't realized the safety bar kit was not compatible with previsous models. Have you or anyone here tried to install a safety bar kit on a 2019 model? How did it go? I would really appreciate the feedback! Thanks!!

Please do more LONG TERM reviews with maintenance & service costs. I own a Multicharger HS Touring model 2020, chain & derailleur. It's put on the market as a longtail cargo Ebike with "multitude" usage. Well..think twice before purchase and read loading capacity. If you want to use the full capacity (max. 65kg) of this bike, keep in mind the wear & tear on the driving system. In my case, 10K km, regular maintenance at dealer, regular cleaning and lubing chain & derailleur, no rough terrains, no adventure, only usage in urban settings. I had 3 total replacements of cassettes, chain because of wear & tear: 3x 300€ including labour = 900€ At last maintenance routine dealer mentioned my Bosch motor was at the last of its lifespan, ball bearings were gone inside. So, that's a new motor at 10K km!? Costs: 1000€ including labour. I knew with purchase that a chain driven Multicharger requires more maintenance and replacement, but EVERY 3000km!? This bike only lives up to his specifications if you don't exceed the total capacity of the bike: 175kg. That means 40-65kg groceries, kids, pets on the back, the driver can NOT weigh more then 80kg. Unfortunately I am 100kg and the bike is not loaded or used every day. Heck, it only has 10K km! Note: warranty of 2 years has expired, no replacements by dealer nor Bosch, nor Riese-Müller. You would expect more quality from a premium bike. Note: no complaints about other components, they are all top notch.

I am an avid road cyclist. My Ultegra 11 sp chains reach their stretch limit ~1,000 mi (1,600km). Cassettes last double that. I do all my own work, so it amounts to $150 (US) every 2,000 mi (3,200km). You are riding a heavier vessel, but the power assist will offset much of the difference, so I’d consider your maintenance normal. That stated, these are the EXACT reasons I’m ordering the Rohloff. Will pay for itself in due course. Factor in my time by not having to clean / lube the drivetrain every 150 mi (nothing wears a drivetrain faster than a dirty chain), plus swap components, and it will happen sooner than later.

What can you provide in Ebikes for a very healthy,strong female at just 5 ft. tall.? She is primarily a walker, but is now interested in riding to keep pace with me. She is not a novice biker. Do we need an appointment to go through to fitting process? Do you have weekend hours?

@@FancyMcDancy When you loosen all 4x stem adjustment bolts (A & B on the side for the cockpit angle and C & D at the front underside for the handlebar clamp) everything loosens and the stem, bar and display mount positions can be rotated. The manual says you only need three turns of bolts A, B, C & D, but you might need a little bit more. There seems to be an interlocking ratchet mechanism, rather than just a simple clamping force. Once done, tighten everything back up to the marked torque settings. Anyway, first time is a little nerve-tingling, as nothing moves until all four bolts are loosened. On my bike, A & B are Torx, whereas C & D are Hex heads! My advice is to be careful; get a good light on the work area and be patient.

is that front rack fixed so it does turn when the fork turns? I always find those bikes a bit hard to get used too.

Front rack is mounted to the frame, not the fork. It makes for a very stable ride. It's rated for 5kg, but just like the back seat it is *very* overengineered and could probably handle 15-20kg (at the cost of handling). I drive the bike with a fairly big bag on the front and it doesn't interfere with steering.

You can already get a dual battery version with 1125Wh. It adds a battery pack on top of the down tube so it's a little less sleek looking than the Supercharger.

The current 12 sp cassettes (for road) also have 2 (or 3) chainrings on the front, so 24 or 36 gear options. However, there will be some overlap. For a double front chainring, ~14 gearing options, but perhaps more range (high/low) depending on rear cassette choice.

Hello friends. It's my lifelong dream to have an e-bike like Reise and Muller... I have been on hemodialysis for 13 years and I have to travel 3 times a week 3km round trip to get to the center... I have a normal bike but I makes me very tired especially after dialysis.. I wish to have an e-bike... I live in agadir in Morocco, my dream is less to be real... But as even I have to continue dreaming 4x4
