I'm 51, and as I've gotten older I've realized that wisdom does not always come with age. Some educated people become less wise as they age because they cannot adopt any new ideas. "That's how we've always done it" is one of the most common explanations for problems we're not fixing. We need the energy and optimism and irreverence of the young combined with the expertise and patience of the old to get things done in politics.

I think every generation has said this. All the new fangled ideas that seemed brilliant, genetically modify food to feed the poor, living an inflated life of consumerism and credit debt because "you only live once" (predecessor to yolo), using new technologies that put more pollution in the environment than ever before, etc seemed brilliant and anyone from the older generation that found any fault or concern were scoffed at with whatever expression preceded "okay boomer". As the same pathway to hell is paved by good intentions, the future generation will be appalled at the current generation and the cycle will continue. In the meantime, enjoy your millions of kurig disposable plastic cups used each day, your addiction to following the unrealistic lifestyles on social media causing suicide to be fairly common, the anti-social results of constant cell phone addiction and skewed social landscape causing the most mass shootings and mentally disturbed folks walking the streets in forever, and even more consumerism than Gen X who were defined by consumerism.

Also like the whole private property vs. publicly owned property schtick - like, maybe there's a bunch of dumb young people who are kind of clueless about it, but I don't trust the old geezers who grew up when houses were a nickel and a dime. Get yourself some middle-aged contractors *who haven't been retired for twelve years* to give their take on the manufacturing state we've created and they can certainly do better to drive better policy moving forward.

I agree with him, and I'm a "millennial". My generation needs to get over itself. I didn't necessarily agree with all the political opinions he hinted at, but the basic idea of young people needing to have more respect for their elders is definitely something people need to take to heart. The opposition in the comments to what he said only proves that. There are stupid old people, certainly, but most of those stupid old people were once even stupider young people.

Remember how the world treated you when your were 18? Remember the tone and the dismissive attitude? Yeah, that was ageism. The worst part is his rant comes right after he did everything he could to tear down the young spokesperson only seconds before he defended the old. All the -isms are two way streets. I don’t like black people thinking they get a pass on being racist, women thinking they get a pass on discriminating against men, and old tops thinking they get to disrespect youths like “respect your elders” isn’t an unfair, one-way street. Everybody respect everybody that hasn’t made it clear they don’t deserve respect.

He is correct. Young people who write off elders that know more than they do are dumb. And I don’t really think I need to explain that defunding the police is stupid since 22 Democrat cities defunded the police and then experienced an immediate crime spike worse than anything we’ve seen in decades. Portland for example, has had a 523% spike in homicides since defunding the police. It’s gotten so bad that democrats are trying to walk back their efforts to defund the police and blame it on Republicans, which isn’t working out so well. Really hope I don’t need to explain why communism is a dumb idea to anyone.

I suspect they're thanking God and hope that the guys running the show manage him at least as competently as they have thus far, and that Harris takes over officially as soon as possible, so that they don't have to invent ways to defend the indefensible and work on trying to distract attention.

When I realized the same feeling, I came up with the thought I might be an adult antiproportional to that feeling: The longer I could identify back, the more stable my identity should have gotten. Funny thing is, getting older, let me be more understanding of my past selves. They did as well as they could (mostly). And more understanding with other people at their place in life. Then a friend came and told me, why be so insecure? 15 years ago you used to strongly inject you opinion on anything and now you are not sure any longer, who is right. Are you depressed. That time, I really felt like the adult in the room.... by the way, I am in my late 30s now and the more "insecure" I got, the better I became in dealing with things. I was much younger then, but I was open minded enough to see their wisdom and life experiences were an asset to myself and to society. The best thing about the BOOMERS is they have lived in a world with the Soviet Union and the threat of nuclear destruction!!! BOOMERS will do anything to stop the GOVERNMENT from getting too much power and that is A GOOD THING!!!

Dear Mr Maher, thank you for this much needed "New Rules", and, with due respect, it looks like you're getting much wiser as well. Greetings from Europe from an elderly person who is very relieved to hear some wisdom out of America. Please continue.

I teach college, and I'm about half a century older than the students (and look it). Every now and then I get a student who really seems to believe they know more than me about the material. They really don't get it that I spent that time learning so I can pass it on to them.

But... you kinduv negated all of that "liberal clout" when you said you "teach college." Bruv... if you're REALLY 50+ years old......... then you should fucking better know better.

Welcome to the safe space generation, where kids never heard the character building words of "You're a loser!". It has created a bunch of self-conceited, coddled, and withdrawn individuals who will plant their feet on whatever hill they find attractive, disconnected from reality. They are told that they are special and will begin to believe it, but reality will always have something different in mind. Self esteem movements have the unfortunate side effect of making people less teachable. "Humility is the beginning of true intelligence." -John Calvin

Is it because they read a actual history book or there grand pa told them how it was, you know actually the truth so they realize how much bullshit rolls out of your colleagues mouth because for some reason you can't teach about actual history,, founding fathers, GOD!!!! being a republic no more you have to teach about socialism and how everybody owes them something or maybe it's just because he's a smart ass, I'm going to stick with the first one though. I'm sorry if this causes violence in the room you read it in.

Gen Xer here: I find this a little ironic coming from a boomer, the generation that coined the phrase "don't trust anyone over 30" but times change, people grow, yadda yadda whatever...*sips tea*

Hey, another fellow Gen Xer! I do find a lot of what “boomers” say suspect as well and it smacks of irony that is wasted on them.
