They didn't even want to go to South America, Neil especially was against it "do we even have fans there". Reruns of McGyver played on tv there with Red Barchetta as the new theme music. They went and had their minds blown, the largest crowds they had ever played before, soccer stadiums filled, 100K and up a night, shows in the pouring rain. Buy that DVD

Epic 2002 performance in Rio that culminated the Vapor Trails Tour. Vapor Trails was their first album in 5 years, as Neil had lost his daughter Selena in a tragic one-car accident outside Toronto in August, 1997. About 10 months later, his wife Jackie passed away from cancer, although Neil said in his book "Ghost Rider" he was certain she died of a broken heart and could not go on living after Selena's loss. For those 5 years, the band had simply ceased to exist. Alex and Geddy had no expectation of Rush existing again and it was not important to them, given their "brother" Neil's grief and losses. In the summer of 1998, Neil set out on what ended up being a 55,000 mile journey across Canada, up to the Arctic Circle, all across America (Mostly the West) and down through Mexico to Central America--on his motorcycle. He eventually and unexpectedly found love again in California, fell in love and married his second wife, Carrie Nuttall. Rush then re-formed, practicing for a long time to get their chops back, and developed the songs for the very personal and autobiographical album: Vapor Trails. The triumphant tour was a joyous occasion for Rush and for all Rush fans. You can really see it in their performance and incredible friendship and camaraderie in the Rio Concert DVD.

Vapor Trails was the first Rush studio recording to not include any keyboards or synthesizers since Caress of Steel. And it is mostly devoid of any traditional guitar solos, a conscious decision by Lifeson.

Like someone said below, YYZ is the identifier for Toronto-Pearson Airport and the VOR (radio beacon used for navigation) nearby. Lifeson is a pilot and all 3 were flying into Toronto. When you tune in the VOR you can turn the sound up and hear the identifier's letters in Morse code. Thus, the idea for this song was born. At the start Peart is doing Morse code for YYZ on the triangle (synthesizer). For them, the song represented coming home after a long trip.

Great reaction. In response to your question, this performance is from 2003's Rush In Rio live album. YYZ first appeared on their album, Moving Pictures, in 1981. I love the crowd's energy. They're all in on this, even singing the instrumental melody. Prior to 2003, Rush had never toured Brazil. So, it was a long time coming for these fans (29 years); and (as they tend to do in Rio De Janeiro), they made it a huge celebration. So cool!

The last video Xanadu was from a performance “Exit stage left...” in 1981, the song was from 1975. This song YYZ was written in 1981 and the performance was 2003. The intro is Morse code, the signal for Toronto Airport, YYZ. (Home). The band is “tight” from hours and hours of practice, many people refer to musical Talent as a gift, but the truth is it takes many years of dedication, hard work and personal sacrifice. Passion, is what takes to the next level. The only gift is the 40 years of music they have given us. ✌️☝️☝️✌️

This was certainly an epic performance at a show that was OFF THE HOOK!!! In an interview they said it was very tough to hear their monitors over the crowd. The whole concert is available on DVD. As many have said, the intro is Morse Code for their hometown airport, but their concept for the rest of the song was to simulate the hustle and bustle of airport activity, all the people and stuff going on at an airport. Great reaction!!
