Don’t think enfield will get 40hp out of a 450cc (presumably) air cooled (and maybe oil cooled) single. If it has that kind of power, it’ll probably be liquid cooled and have a different (higher revving) engine character. Might be nice, but not what enfields are about for me

Been looking forward to seeing this bike since the hype, and hasn't failed my expectations. Yes, the welds are a bit ugly, but then as long as they do what they are supposed to do, and I too wondered if the exhaust was stainless steel, hence the early 'discolouration'. A roll bag on the back, and some very pleasant weekends away around the lakes, or the borders area would be great.

Just got three thousand miles on my Scram , and fitted a Tec camshaft , loved the Scram , but the cam replacement really does improve the bikes engine torque range , less bogging down on second gear and pulls far smoother in 4th at 30 mph , engine is quieter to , think its because it hasnt got all the decompression tranclament on the replacement cam to rattle about , yourwelcome to try it , thanks , great review

Thanks for this review, the first ride on UK roads of this latest iteration of the Himalayan. Just a quick point about the exhaust system on the bike, which looks identical to the exhaust on the latest Himalayan to my eyes. You mention discolouration and rust. The system is stainless steel and as such can't rust in the sense that it'll corrode significantly, as is the case with mild steel. It will however discolour due to oxidisation. This effect is accelerated due to heat. It quickly reaches a point of stability beyond which it will discolour no further. I have a three year old Himalayan with this patina and I quite like the look. It's very common with stainless exhausts and whilst it's not to everyones liking the upside is you'll never need to replace it because it's rusted to hell.

Interesting Video Andy. I've recently changed from a BMW k1200 to the Himalayan. I do think that as an owner of one of these kind of hikes that you have to accept that these bikes are built down to a price. My Himmy is 250 miles old and the exhaust can has done the same. It's nothing a bit of autosol won't sort though. The welds are indeed rubbish but I accept this. If this is a problem then buyers need to look else where. I would like a Triumph Tiger but at the best part of twice the price I dont believe I would have more fun on a tiger than I am on my new Himmy. I can throw this bike about. Probably drop it on a green lane and then repair it without the need to take out a loan. The engine ln these bikes whilst sounding very under powered is actually really good fun. It has enough power to get me across the country loaded up and scratch the local country lanes. One observation on the 411 is that the Speedo drive looks different on the front right fork. Not sure i saw the cable coming down the fork?
@PaulUpton1
@PaulUpton1 2 жыл бұрын
Visited my local RE dealer today and they had a couple in stock. The speedo drive is different. its missing from the front wheel. I could not see the rear wheel in detail but I have to assume its fitted there somewhere... It does make the front look a bit tidier not having the speedo electronics floating around.

Another great review Andy👌 Girlfriend rides Himalayan which I also like but not entirely convinced about the looks. Scram looks much better IMO. Slightly improved performance and braking might be coming from the weight loss😆 Recently moved to Salisbury plains so this would be ideal bike and especially at this price point. Great first ride. As an owner, and fan, of the Himalayan, I'm quite interested in the new Scram 411. Very similar to my Himalayan, but, I must agree with you, 'much' better looking! I've never been a huge fan, of the 'looks', of the Himalayan, but love the bike for what I bought it for..... Commuting, bimbling around the local back lanes, and a little light green laning. Looking forward to more videos. Grumps.

I’m so pleased you have reviewed the Scram, I have been waiting for this motorcycle to show itself in my local RE dealership, along with a price tag, I feel that what’s happening in the world with regards to energy costs etc may push the price a little a higher than originally planned. I had considered putting one of these in my garage, it would still be good value however I’m a little disappointed by a couple of you observations,namely the welds and exhaust already showing signs of deterioration. Big thanks for another great review..

I like the look of the scram411 but the welds were disappointing. The exhaust needs a replacement full system and I’d remove the ugly grab handle and a little more power would be nice too. But I’d definitely use it off road. Love the look of the jacket too.

Since the Scram shares, most of its components with the Himalayan which came out in 2016 the flaws too have been carried forward. Weld quality on the frame and headstock is crude and Quality levels have improved since the Himalayan first made its debut, but there’s still a lot to be desired. Also, a point to note is that RE Interceptor and GT 650, Classic and the Meteor 350 are all the bikes that came after 2018 by then RE have vastly improved their Build Quality this is the reason why the Interceptor and the latter released bikes have better build quality. According to me RE Scram 411 uses the same old Tooling as the Himalayan hence the poor weld quality. It's better to wait for the new Himalayan 450 which will be launched next year and will have a better build quality and more power & torque.

The 450 is going to be a proper off roader with Enfield’s looking at Dakar too .. Moreover the Himalayan has had its polishings and what you get today has to be the best iteration of that 400 cc ever. Congratulations , safe riding !

Another quality review once again Andy, if the price is circa 4.5k or there abouts I think the dodgy welds and suspect exhaust might well be acceptable for me especially if this was to be a second bike. I think lots of reviewers are missing the point with the new single cylinder RE bikes. I have a 350 classic and bought it primarily for transport as I would the Scram or any of the other singles. So if you start from will it get you cheaply, safely and comfortably to work or out and about on your daily travels then anything it does over and above this is a bonus. I don’t have and don’t need a tripper or other electronics but heated grips fitted for £100 worth every penny. Until recently I had a 1098 Ducati and a 990 KTM, fantastic bikes, but hugely impractical as an everyday mode of transport. As far as fashion is concerned I’m guessing that your gear plus helmet, etc. adds up to at least a quarter of the price of the bike? Makes a bit of a nonsense if you are looking to buy a cost efficient and practical mode of transport. I can see it, and get it, in terms of hobby/Leisure vehicles but if we want more people riding bikes then it needs to be attainable for anyone looking to progress from pedal power.
@stevec6427

I think a lot of reviewers forget how cheap the bikes are. The Interceptor always gets compared to the Bonneville which is 50% more expensive and has a bigger engine. That's just not a fair comparison. I've got a Bonneville and I don't think it's really £3000 better than an Interceptor, it's a bit better of course but not that much

It’s a pretty good looking bike, I’m not a fan of the big yellow badge though. If it’s around £4500, it’s a good value bike, but I’ve been looking at second hand bikes around 5k, including at your friends at super bike factory, and you can get a lot more bike for that sort of money, even with low mileage. Great review and nice to be riding in the sun. 👍

Great video thanks Andy, bike does look fantastic and as an ex Himalayan owner I'd be very interested to have a test ride on one. The saddle looks a lot more comfortable than the Himi, and seat height is lower which for me is better plus the bike is lighter in weight, always a bonus! Styling is spot on for the model and in my view the engine is a peach for a long stroke single thumper. The exhaust looks likes it's a carry over from the Himi in which case it won't rust as it's made from Stainless Steel (all be it not the best quality) but with a bit of work they do polish up nicely. For the projected cost it looks like another winner for RE. Very nice.👍😊
@stucrisp6865
@stucrisp6865 2 жыл бұрын
The tarnish on the exhaust is due to heat on the stainless steel. It goes an uneven bronze over time. Uneven perhaps because the heating wouldn't be consistent with all the cat and baffler gubbins in there. The later Ural sidecars had this kind of exhaust and they look the same. I must admit I'm not a fan of this either but a stainless zorst shouldn't rust out, so that's nice. I guess it counts as a quality touch. Love the channel keep up the great work. My latest ride is a vintage Dnepr sidecar which, given it's Ukrainian heritage, is nice given the state of things there right now. All the best from Brisbane Australia.

The finish is disappointing though - looks like it came out of a different factory to the rest of the RE range - who's quality seems to improve with every new bike (especially the 350 Classic for example). Hopefully, they'll jump on this quickly before it ruins their current (high) reputation is affected?

I do have to say I prefer the look of the scram and may well consider a change. If your not going onto carriage way or motorways they just make sense. Think I'm getting around 80mpg so in the current climate that's cheap transport to work and back. Having a passenger or language doesn't seem to make any difference to the engine pulling either.

Great video as usual Andy, totally agree with you on this one, i know its built to a budget and is great that they come in at a great price but those welds look awful and the exhaust is going to be an issue, the rest looks ok, i would like to have seen LED lights and indicators although it may push the cost up but for Europe it would be worth it. Enjoyed the vid 👍

The exhaust is identical to the standard Himalayan and they haven't proved to be a problem at all, 8nnfact most Himalayan owners don't ever bother to change them for after market parts. It is normal that they discolour, but they don't rust at all.

I have a 2021 Himalayan with about 1000 miles on the clock. I love the looks, the size, the riding position, and the gearbox. It is slow. The switchgear feels cheap. It is going back to the dealer soon for repeated stalling when “cold”. I have to feather the throttle to keep it from stalling and it will still stall during the first mile or two. The seat is hard. I’m also losing my ABS and Neutral indicator on my instrument cluster. They are slowly moving off center and slipping off at the 7 o’clock position. I like the Himalayan, but I may have been happier with the RE Meteor. Cheers from the colonies.

Thanks for your video, i think your review is the best of them all, and i have been watching reviews on the Scram for months, I've bought a red one, its a £100 extra, but the only thing I'm worried about is the tyre compound, i shall change them to a nice road tyre. Interceptor but found it a bit heavy, and it didn't hold the road in the wet.

I'm an engineer and an excellent tig/mig welder. Those welds on both bikes are awful. Seriously cold welds, and the stop starts show shocking pits. Prone to breaking. I should apply for a job at Royal tig washing those bad welds. It would solve the problem and they'd look good. Ill put my trumpet down. The upside is its a nice bike, aesthetically, and aimed at a "Sunday Trundler " which corners the old school market. I like RE, its a brilliant low end bike with character and when it inevitably breaks, you can sit in your garage tinkering. Bliss.

Many years ago a friend who is a top notch welder/fabricator pointed out the welds on a Japanese bike. One side was perfect and the other was not. He said that an apprentice worked on one side. Royal Enfield may have a shortage of skilled workers due to demand. This will improve as time goes on.

I rode a ‘21 Himalayan. I loved the ergonomics and simple, basic, low tech package. What I did not like was the abject lack of power. You described the engine on the Himi as tiresome and the Scram 411 as a bit less tiresome, you were being kind, I think I would describe the 411 engine as a “pooch.” I do really like the package, the Himi and the Scram just need quite a bit more power. It will be interesting to see if R.E. does come through with the rumored liquid cooled, 40 hp. single.

Not bad for a cheap and cheerful bike. I would think that it would be ideal for a 1st bike after passing your test, and not to shure what type of biking you want to do. Just one thing, I think that the yellow 'blobs' at the bottom of the tank would look better if they were picked out in one of the grey colours on the tank.
