Foo the Flowerhorn

4 жыл бұрын

This project started with a lava rock from a local rock yard back in June. It took so long to finish b/c I bought the rock without a plan, and I wasn’t sure if I could do this successfully. If the rock didn’t work out, the whole project would not have come to fruition. After the rock was drilled, I had to plan things out one by one, here and there, with a bit of procrastination, and that’s why this took nearly 3 months to finish. I also made the table that the tank is sitting on.
Patreon: / footheflowerhorn
KZbin Member: / @footheflowerhorn

Merch: teespring.com/stores/foo-store
The tank was custom made at a local aquarium store. It’s a low iron 8mm thick glass.
One thing to mention is that the cap lava gravel is too big. Also, b/c the pump is moving the water around, the water column became brown very fast. First time filling up the tank, I waited 24 hours to see if the water would be clear enough to plant the plants. It was not. I did 100% water change, and waited another 24 hours. I repeated this process for around 10 days. So, that’s ten 100% water changes in 10 days until it was clear enough to plant the plants. This is the reason why I usually wait 24 hours after the very first fill. If the setup is all good, the water column shouldn’t be too brown and you can plant the plants. In this case, the cap gravel was too big, and the pump is located below the gravel so the organic soil leached out much quicker.
I don’t expect all of the plants to make it. I don’t know if the java moss can survive on the wet rock, either. I also know I shouldn’t have bought the expensive plants for a Walstad method tank, but I couldn’t help myself :)
I’ll update this tank in 2 months.
This is a Walstad Method tank.

I wouldn't say Ember Tetras. They are a mid-column fish. They might feel stressed out from the thin water level and they wouldn't be able to school in the same manner within such a set-up.
@tylerbarrett5
@tylerbarrett5 4 жыл бұрын
@@Helveteshit I dont think they'd be stressed as long as there is plenty of oxygen getting into the water they come from a river basin. I picked them because they're one of the smallest schooling fish and would bring alot of color to the aquarium. Otherwise i would have said neons or swordtails. Neons are literally everywhere and swordtails breed like crazy so they would quickly overrun that tank.

@@GreyhoundGamer my counter would be that, a soldering iron costs less than 10$ and could save you a lot of money with barely any practice, just be watching some KZbin videos. Same goes for a saw to cut aluminum. Money spent can be money saved. As for time, if you value your money and enjoying tinkering, I'd say the time is well spent :)

With a little creativity, those fake plants and things can go a long way. In my time building enclosures, I've learned one thing: cohesion. Figure out small ways that the props can interact. For example, I have a small hide for my leopard gecko that has a little overhang on one of the doors. I tucked her water bowl in there, so much like a real cave, there's a body of water at the end. I tuck plants into corners, where they'd be likely to grow if they were real. Layers do a lot too. Making it look like there's an edge or a cliffside or something similar makes a big difference when it comes to being natural looking. That being said, there's nothing wrong with a basic aquarium. You got it for the fish, not the plastic inside with the fish.

a7neu I think the powerhead was attached to the bottom of the large lava rock. So I'm guessing that during maintenance you could pull out the large rock and add the sponge. Problem here being the substrate but I don't think the soil is going to be disturbed if done carefully.

Second pygmy cories. Normal cories won't like the gravel, but pygmy cories don't really dig in the gravel, so that's fine. Although I do worry about how you'd be able to have pygmy cories without overstocking as that's a 7.5 gallon tank and you really want minimum 6 cories.
