Try using an impact or when really stuck I've use a jack underneath a wrench to really give her some. It's slightly risky I guess but I earned some respect from a stumped guy with 20 years more experience than me on that day.

Work at Subaru, works great with a stubby 1/2 impact. I used to use a 3/8 17mm universal socket to remove the caliper bolts (FSUM17A)
@Ghost.uppercut3 жыл бұрын
You definitely want to start using impact because you can square out chrome more and it will get stuck in super rusted bolts which is annoying
@kevingallineauii93534 жыл бұрын
I had this exact problem (that this tool resolves) just a couple of weeks ago. I had to replace a worn out ball joint. I was taking the caliper bracket bolts out so I could remove that and the rotor. I have the heavy duty pickle clamp to push the ball joint bolt out of the control arm and needed the rotor out of the way. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) the pinch bolt and ball joint itself were welded in with rust and corrosion so I had to remove knuckle anyway. The cam style camber adjustment bolt makes it relatively easy to keep the alignment taking things apart and putting them back together if you are careful. So, in the end it would have been nice to have this tool (a standard socket JUST fits between the two bolt heads, there is no clearance for a socket wrench or extension) but I made due with the tools I had just fine. This would definitely be a nice addition to my tool box for when I do brake work on my Forester. I will certainly consider picking one up before I have work on it again.

Ha Ha, I still carry the physical scars from using a spanner to remove them a few months back.There are other cheats you could possibly use although slightly 'brutal', grind down a spare 17mm socket/extension bar at the end until it fits and hope you have left enough meat on them. I just made sure I used plenty anti seizure compound on reassembly. The more I see those impact wrenches the more I like them, great demonstration again.
@cajunaggie98154 жыл бұрын
I must say that I am able to get to those bolts with a long swivel extension and a short socket, but only to break them free. Like you said, it pinches the socket if you try to take it out with the impact. Torquing the fastener not a problem once the bolt is installed using a 3/8 shallow socket and an extension. That tool definitely simplifies the job though. (On my first car, I actually removed the lower strut bolt - lol)

Lmao simply 😂 it's clear you don't do this for a living. That bolt or knuckle can. GET damaged and than you have the risk of not only more tools but hitting that bolt regardless of how tight the top one is could cause a shift or shock which throes your alignment off.

That bolt really is a pain. The first time I was doing a brake job on the old WRX, I actually snapped the head of that bolt clean off because I was tightening it rather than breaking it loose. Dunno how I made that mistake. Nowadays I just break it loose by double wrenching. I torque it to spec by using a nut in one end of the wrench while the other end is on the head of the bolt.
